In the discord server I moderate, “what are stigmata?” or “how do they work?” is a question I’ve answered many times so here goes.
Stigmata are closely connected to the Honkai but depending on what kind of stigmata a person has they will be wildly different.
Let’s start with the easiest kind of stigmata to explain.
Herrschers have stigmata. That’s it. It’s that easy. They get their world ending super powers, they also get a neat birthmark/tattoo looking thing.
Herrscher of Reason, I don’t think we’ve seen it?
Skipping Herrscher of Ice cause I haven’t seen it.
Herrscher of Death followed by Herrscher of Fire
From the 8th through 14th Herrschers we only see the 12th’s clearly.
(This one is a doozy, because weird explanations from mihoyo mean we don’t know if Theresa current has this one after Sakura gave her her Herrscher core but now that the 12th Divine Key, Jizo Mitama, has been made she shouldn’t have the core anymore but might have the stigmata still? I’ll go over how weird the situation with Sakura is in another post, it’s so bad.)
These are the confusing ones. DR. MEI from the previous era made these and put them on humans who would be put into cryostasis to rebuild humanity in preparation for the 14th Herrscher. This was Project STIGMA. However there are very few left and that’s a current plot point in recent chapters so in case anyone isn’t caught up I won’t spoil anything. Each stigmata of this type seems to be unique, we see Kevin communicate with Siegfried in the 2nd Eruption Manga via the Kaslana stigmata. Everyone with this type of stigmata seems to be immune to the corrupting effects of the Honkai.
The Kaslana stigmata also gives very strong Honkai resistance to the people who have it.
The Shariac stigmata nullifies Honkai energy.
Others we’ve seen are Seele’s stigmata which appears to contain the information for an abundance of previous era weapons and her alter ego.
(yes, Seele’s stigmata is exactly the same in appearance as the Herrscher of Death’s, but she doesn’t have any of it’s powers. It could be that Project STIGMA used Herrscher stigmata as a base, it could be a coincidence, or Seele could be the future Herrscher of Death. We don’t know yet.)
Ji Xuanyuan had this type of stigmata but we don’t know if it gave her any powers. (I would find this picture but I really don’t want to go through the trouble of finding the deleted Chiyou manga). The St. Freya gang tried to find a way to get it and give it to Himeko somehow but then the whole Chapter Xuanyuan and Chapter Chiyou chronicles happened.
It’s important to note that these stigmata are not the same as MANTIS soldiers who have Honkai beast DNA like Kevin Kaslana, Fu Hua, or Su.
These are Schicksal’s attempt at recreating the stigmata from the previous era but they aren’t very good. They are injected into Valkyries and are what give them their powers but also kill them over time leading to them dying or becoming zombies. Himeko and Rita have this. They don’t seem to appear as a mark.
