Keeping Things Simple
Recently I ended up choosing “Into the Woods” as final project for my class. With it, I was challenged to produce my version of movie poster-like images just like my students. I limited myself to not spend lavishly and so I spent hours in my usual “thinking place,” the National Bookstore in Greenbelt. In a span of three days, I was able to think of all the materials I needed for this project.
Note: This is not to belittle nor intimidate photography students but to show as an example that even a big project such as a final output can be done in the cheapest manner.

Here are the photos I ended up with:
Little Red Riding Hood
This was my original concept.
Initially, I wanted to create characters from the movie using origami. But while researching I realized that some characters are too difficult to do and it will definitely take time to master. So I decided to stick with little red riding hood as an origami piece then the others will be created using paper in another style.
For this concept, I used a paper clip to make little red riding hood float from the table I was using. The reason for this is for both practicality and artistry (of some sort). Practicality, because I don’t want to produce a set design for the flooring to cover the table. Artistry? Well its more on putting into reality how I envisioned it in my mind.
Lighting was simple for this layout because my main subject is just small. I only used two light sources. One is a small desk lamp which I used as my main light. I placed this at the right side of the camera pointing towards the subject and a fluorescent light placed on the floor in between the wall and the table. This is to give a slight glow in the background.
Rapunzel
This is actually my favorite!
I used cardboard and cartolina for the tower and yarn for the hair. I used the same table and light sources for this. But I played around with the desk lamp and positioned it slightly behind the subject on the camera left. The lamp is also slightly pointed towards the camera. Actually, this wasn’t my original plan as lighting setup but I am glad I experimented!
Here is the raw photo:
Yup that is my hand holding the light and taking the picture at the same time! Talk about multitasking!
The Wolf
Now this one started as frustrating for me. Because I really wanted to do a three dimensional wolf origami. I guess with old age comes with shortened patience.
So, instead of showing the wolf in its full glory, I decided to just show his tail with the use of a furry stick I found in the scrapbook section.

The Beanstalk from “Jack and the Beanstalk”
For this one, I wanted it to be a little different. I based it on an IOS game called “Limbo” where they made use of silhouette all through out the game.
I printed out a drawing of a beanstalk traced it on a folder and cut it out. I placed the desk lamp on a stool and placed it behind the desk and directly behind the beanstalk cardboard. I used paperclips to make the cardboard stand on its own.
