Hoatzin wasn't feeling anger more morbid curiousity. As a senior he thought he seen it all. But sometimes he is proven wrong....and that delights him. Another type of challenge to enhance his experiences down here....HOW CAN HE HATE THAT.

Hoatzin snapped out of his personal reverie of varything thoughts to look at the fellow reaper besides him. He clapped his hands trying to get Romeo to blink. "Are you training for a staring contest?" He remarked. Hoatzin pulled down his sunglasses to eye the other. "I have been called quite an expert." There was a click of his tongue.

"Is it though?" Hoatzin said twirling the sunglasses. "The way I see it is a good oppurtunity for any reaper young or old. Breaking the pastiche of business." He said. There was a slight shrug. "I will admit to giving a little push." He said with an allknowing grin. "I'm sure you must be intrigued how?"

Luckily for Kestrel, anger only served to sharpen his reflexive instincts. He was all too aware of Hoatzin's presence beside him, of the shift and jerk of his hands, the accompanying sound grating his nerves. He should have more patience for Hoatzin, who was a skilled Reaper in his own right, and had even taught Kestrel a few things about the craft in his earlier days of service. And yet... "I find that hard to believe, especially if you're playing the silent kind."

With a short exhale to release some of the tension he had no business directing at his senior, Kestrel aimed for something in the ballpark of begrudging indulgence. "I would tell you how completely and utterly not intrigued I am, Hoatzin, but experience indicates that won't deter your rambling."

Osprey felt a twinge of irritation at the sound of Kestrel's melodic intonation. Her rage only spiked higher as he bullied his way closer, breezily tousling some of her feathers in directions she knew she would need to manually rearrange later. But, what was that saying? In for a penny, in for a pound? Keeping her eyes on the rotund, bearded man she had captive, she flicked the wing closest to Romeo in the direction of his head, hoping to catch him off guard. Something acerb bubbled up in her throat as she processed Kestrel's words, fighting the urge to fall further into their usual song and dance. But, she had known that doing this in a public space would be dicey—what with every grymm on a razor's edge and itching for an advantage. Honestly, if anything, she should be flattered that Kestrel had located her like a heat-seeking missile, somehow intuiting that she was up to something. But the thought did little to settle her agitation, she had hoped to keep him off her tail for longer than this. She had to stick to a plan. Anything else would raise more of Romeo’s suspicions. Shifting her attention back to the grymm in front of her—Sparrow, from the Governance Office—she gave him a hurt, nonplussed expression before letting out a shocked little, “...Oh..! ...Well, that’s a little mean. Don’t you think so, Sparrow?”

Sparrow responded by looking at her blankly. She felt another pang of agitation but she should have known Sparrow wouldn’t be much help. His timid personality had been why she had approached him in the first place; figuring that meek grymm would make easier targets. Pursing her lips, she shot Sparrow a sheepish smile before brushing a few stands of hairs away from her face. She chanced a quick sideways glance in the direction Rome's voice had come and was annoyed to find that he was still hovering nearby. Irritation mounting, Osprey fell back on to old habits. “I mean, honestly, pot calling the kettle black, am I right?” She chucked acrimoniously. “But seriously, you do have to ask yourself why "Mr. Big Shot" is loitering at the office when the game is already afoot.” Scooting in closer to Sparrow, she made a show of stage whispering conspiratorially, her voice a deep rumble, smile turning more severe. “You think he’s doing something as cocky as giving the rest of us all a head start? What a fucking jackass.” Letting out a puff of laughter, Osprey pulled away before reaching out an arm to pat Sparrow’s shoulder companionably as she tucked her wings back in. “I just wanted a few more copies of the letter from my scrapbook, is all. But if you can’t part with your letter, Sparrow, I totally get it! S’not every day we get something from Their Eminence Themselves, y’know?” Shooting another sideways glance at Kestrel she tried to gauge his expression. She had no clue how much Romeo knew about her hobbies but that lie was totally believable, right?

"Hey, it's Sir Fucking Jackass, Ospy. I was knighted before I died, isn't that crazy?" It was shortly after he'd secured his fourth consecutive world championship. Before Suzuka, he'd been en route to securing a fifth. In truth, he needed no validation from the monarchy, and he was quick to point out the irony of being a knight and a direct descendant of the Windrush generation, but it would've been more trouble than it was worth to turn it down. Besides, he really liked the sound of Sir Fucking Jackass.

As far as Kestrel was concerned, Sparrow was nothing but a prop in this conversation. Not remarkable enough to warrant the same level of engagement as Osprey did -- but, perhaps, considering what Romeo's engagement looked like, that was a blessing in disguise.

"You scrapbook? God, I'm having such a hard time picturing what that looks like. Are there stickers involved? Glitter?" In the fashion of a true egocentric, he had to wonder if he featured in it at all, maybe with some defaced photographs and big red Xs.

With a faux-contemplative sigh, he took a moment to size her up, before decisively renewing his single-minded mission to make one of her eyes twitch. Maybe the left one, today, just for a change. "I guess I don't really think of blindly ambitious pit vipers as having hobbies. But hey, I like a good movie every now and again, so maybe that's just an oversight."

these days, his dreams are abstract and hard to place. typically unsettling, but not always in a bad way. still, it feels dangerous to linger in them. when he was alive - maybe even for a while in the After - he had a pretty potent revenge fantasy about crashing his ex's wedding with some choice words about the groom's sexual preferences and the real reason he was so motivated to take the 1999 world title from romeo. he could really only envision his own happiness in relation to someone else's suffering, which is a little sad and a little funny!

"you think so?" he asked, eyes still glued to the letter in his hand. "i mean, i get they need to do a thorough performance audit and all. but holding out an all-out manhunt for a random soul? how would they work out the grading rubric? " then with furrowed brow and a shake of his head. "i suspect this might be an actual emergency."

it was then that he looked up at the other grymm, noticing the way the burning intensity behind his gaze. though coming from kestrel, that wasn't particularly unusual either. "so, i take it the great kestrel's not joining the flock this time, then?" he questioned, head cocked slightly to the side. "aren't you at least a little curious what's so 'abnormal' about this particular soul that they managed to evade one of us?"

Through no fault of Crow's own, the question only further incensed him. He should probably be thankful that The Magistrate left Psyche's abilities out of the missive, but in truth, it only fanned the flames of his growing suspicion that there was a department-wide conspiracy afoot. Really, what sort of game were they playing "Well, I couldn't do that to my fellow Grymm." People had come to expect a certain lazy arrogance from him; to not arouse suspicion, he had to continue embodying it, even amid his present doubts. "Without me in the mix, the rest of you are basically on an endless wild goose chase. Pun not intended."

Eager to shift the focus away from the existence of his own hunt, he gestured vaguely to the paper in Crow's hands. "Curiosity is your wheelhouse. Are you signing up?" Romeo would assume so, if for no other reason than to be closer to the mystery.

Osprey stood with her back to the Great Halls, her body held taut like a bowstring with her arms crossed over her chest. The slender fingers of her right hand rhythmically tapping on the edges of a slightly crumpled manila folder clutched tightly in her grip. Her eyebrows were furrowed in irritation, lips pursed in a pout as her eyes darted to and fro. Her gaze momentarily pausing on one of the hundreds of people milling around the common area before darting to the next. Her large wings were tucked closely to her back but an occasional involuntary twitch shifted the giant mass of browns like waves, making her feathers stand on end before they settled again. She let out a deep sigh still searching the crowd before here eyes came to a complete stop. She squinted before recognition and a bright smile broke out on her face; the attempt at friendliness immediately clashing with the almost wolfish look in her eyes. Unfurling her wings slightly, Osprey forcefully created space between herself and the sea of people moving around the Great Halls. A handful of shades shot her dirty looks as they begrudgingly walked around her but she paid them no mind as she stalked forward. “Oh my gosh, hi!” She said with a high inflection on the final word. “Wow! It’s so funny running into you here!” The smile from before was pinched tightly as she continued to step closer. Her wings opening wider to create a small alcove in the crowd around herself and the other person. “Anyway, since you are here I figure you either signed up for the challenge or declined the invitation—and that’s wonderful! Great even. Way to go for making a decision!” She said, pumping a celebratory fist up in the air, the motion slightly stiff. “That’s so cool! But, anyway, I have a slightly weird request. Well, not weird—just, uh, since you got all that,” She waved her hand in the general direction of the D.O.A.A. reception desk, “dealt with, you probably don’t need the letter anymore, right?” Taking another step she tucked the folder still in her hands under one of her arms before grasping her hands together, the smile growing thin-lipped. “Sooooo, do you think I could maybe have it instead?”

With the entire D.O.A.A. buzzing about the hunt, the quiet simmer of Romeo's anger wasn't nearly as palpable as it might otherwise be. He could seek refuge in his bardo, but that felt too much like running from a fight. Besides, he didn't want anyone noticing his absence and drawing certain conclusions from it.

Upon catching sight of the awkward exchange transpiring in the lobby, he just couldn't help himself. Especially not now. For him, riling up Osprey was a surefire way to self-soothe. Like yoga or meditation, except for unrepentant assholes. Ignoring the wide berth her impressive wings demanded, he stepped in close, perhaps ruffling a few of her feathers with the movement.

"Jesus, Ospy. Is that supposed to be a smile?" His lips tilted into something that might be evocative of sympathy, were it not for the obvious note of cruel teasing. "Maybe try it again with teeth." He gestured unhelpfully along his own mouth.

"I wouldn't give it to her," Romeo ducked his head slightly toward the Grymm between them, conspiratorial, but it was all for show. He spoke at full volume, eyes bright. "I don't know why she'd want your copy of a widely distributed communique we all got—" well, he could think of a couple reasons, it just served him better to insinuate she was nuts, "—but, I mean, you smell it, right? Coffee, professional envy, maybe just the slightest undertone of mania."

jo takes the briefing with a quiet, practiced fluidity, flicking through the list with a frown. "could you--" he points to a single name on the list. "i worry i might hesitate on this one." he wouldn't. he knows that. rome probably would know that too-- but he'd always prefer to be safe than sorry, take his time with the ones that didn't leave him with a single ounce of hesitation. at the offer, his head lifts upwards, the expression on his face not shifting, but his wings twitching in a single, uncertain motion. "are you sure? i wouldn't want to impose." and part of it's true. he has his own place, an apartment conjured up by the strangeness of near vane. a place that he tends to like he imagined the person he had once been might have tended to his house. but not his personal bardo-- never that. but the other half is: the offer feels too close to some kind of soft underbelly, like the gentle brush of white down. and really, he didn't know what to do with that-- it felt like not knowing where to put his hands, not knowing how to navigate a space that reflected the other grymm's heart. but he did have to agree. waiting was more tedium than it was almost ever worth.

Romeo glances at the file over Jo's shoulder, taking a moment to recall the details of the retrieval. Jo wouldn't hesitate, but that didn't matter. Romeo enjoyed a challenging reaping, couldn't quite pass on the opportunity to show off a little. "That's fine. Maybe a hand on the back of his neck, when I cut. Seems like he'll be thinking of his lover." Absentmindedly, he simulates the touch on his own nape, as if testing out the weight.

"Please," Romeo scoffs, and it's something of a relief to know that the person he's talking to isn't likely to shrink away from the acerbic sound of it. "If I came to your Residence For The Bardo-challenged, that would be imposing. If you came to mine, and you walked in and saw a 20-foot tall marble statue of a bunch of geriatric clowns having an orgy, you wouldn't ask me a single question about it." Romeo spins on his heel, walking backwards along the empty street, and it comes just as easy as running his mouth. "You'd pause, blink twice, then be like, shoes on or off?"

where: the department of afterlife affairs, collections office when: shortly after the events of the prologue status: closed [cap - 3/3.] anger is the most prominent emotion romeo feels as he parses the letter, once, twice, a third time, just to be fucking sure that its contents are laying out the insulting proposition he thinks they are. it's almost as if he is instantly transported to the moment of the failed reaping, to looking into that abnormal individual's eyes and feeling their soul slip neatly and promptly through his fingers. upon unwillingly revisiting that memory, he finds that the immediate stab of his first failure in the after is, unfortunately, no less sickening the second time around. for strategic reasons, he makes a concerted effort to calm the storm in his mind, to appear interested but unbothered. his eyes are too intense in their focus, even as the glide of them along the mass of departing ravens is slow, lazy. "well, well, well," he drawls. "hear that? it's the sound of hundreds of desperate little sycophants fluttering their way to the registration desk. part of me thinks this is some ploy to weed out the weak and overeager."

where: near vane when: before kestrel was assigned to reap psyche status: closed, @pxsserine building collapse, gdynia, multiple fatalities. collection was likely to be taxing as it would require lingering in the living world, reaping each soul or batch of souls as the disaster unfolded over a matter of hours. with regards to jobs like this one, romeo made his preferences clear — if multiple reapers were recommended, he needed only jo, and if jo was not available, he preferred to work alone. "the timing will be tricky. nothing we haven't worked around before, but if there's anyone you want to punt to me, speak now or forever hold your peace." he hands the briefing over as they walk, a seamless, familiar delivery. the fog is thin and light on this street, almost like morning mist. "we'll make quota, after, which is fucking tedious and annoying." romeo despised the brief bursts of aimless time between rotations, even if he could feel his own mental and existential need for it. "you can wait it out at mine, if you like."

SIGNATURE DOOR:

short description: wooden, 8 foot tall, neatly painted in sage green with a glass fanlight along the top, covered by a white limestone arch connected to two pillars with intricate carvings in them the door itself is reminiscent of the door to his parents' apartment in london. not the flat he grew up in, but the more townhouse-like place he bought them when he started making big money as a driver. in his adult years, it was the closest thing he had to a real "home," as he was typically continent-hopping during the professional season. the door is about 8 feet tall, painted in a neat sage green, with a fanlight over the top, the warm glow of his parent's entryway lights coming through the glass. protruding out from the door is a cream-colored arch, punctuated by twin pillars. on closer inspection, there are scenes, relics, and the barest impression of faces from romeo's life cast in relief from the white limestone. the carvings are not comprehensible as a story - and romeo has already forgotten the meanings of some of the etchings. it is a minor source of frustration. the door knob is an antique, black wood and brass, an intricate pattern of rose vines etched against it.

it comes as no surprise that romeo's soul sever is car-related - in addition to being a driver, his father was also a mechanic. his soul sever is a pair of automotive cutting shears, used to cleave apart steel, aluminum, brass, and copper - any of the metals that might be used in a car or engine. it's the sort of tool he wouldn't have been allowed to touch, when he was a kid. his version is a bit less advanced than the kinds they use know, closer to what his dad would've used. the handle is a light blue.

romeo has the plumage of an adult, female nankeen kestrel - the upper part of his wings are a pale reddish brown, which contrasts with black flight-feathers that are finely streaked with white beneath. the primary difference between the nankeen and the eurasian kestrel is the patterning - there are spots on romeo's wings, but they are fainter, and less consistent, most visible from up close.

WHAT SHAPE DOES THEIR BARDO USUALLY TAKE?

romeo's bardo takes the form of a sprawling mansion, with each of the rooms in the style of a place where he spent one of the best nights of his life. some examples of the rooms include: the hotel room in monaco he spent the night in after winning his first grand prix, a speakeasy in monza where he celebrated his first world championship win, a formula one paddock out back, a bedroom in the style of the studio apartment he grew up in in brixton. as with the carvings on his signature door, some of the details of the rooms have become fuzzy in his memories of his life. he doesn't know what purpose they really serve, except that they were once important to him. his bardo is so deeply and intensely personal that it's rare for him to invite someone back there

you know your most intimidating coworker? the one you're kind of scared to approach with any question, so you double, triple, quadruple check that you can't do it yourself OR go through someone else? you only talk to them when you have to, because when you do talk to them, they make you feel a bit like an idiot. but you can tell that it isn't actually out of cruelty, it's more that they have dispensed with all politeness/formalities, and everything they say is blunt because it's maximized for efficiency. that's romeo! it is kind of a pain and slightly demoralizing to interact with him, but he CAN get you what you need. ..............................unless it's a certain uncatchable soul of course! which segues into...

WHAT IS THEIR OPINION ON 𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙼𝚊𝚐𝚒𝚜𝚝𝚛𝚊𝚝𝚎?

before he was assigned to reap psyche, he thought 𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙼𝚊𝚐𝚒𝚜𝚝𝚛𝚊𝚝𝚎 was flawed but overall competent. he has always had an analytic mind, has unconsciously picked apart and considered the systemic implications of any hierarchy he encountered. so he had his criticisms, though he kept them to himself, and largely respected 𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙼𝚊𝚐𝚒𝚜𝚝𝚛𝚊𝚝𝚎's authority. AFTER he was assigned to reap psyche, well. he feels like that motherfucker set him up to fail on PURPOSE. and he's absolutely seething about it, obsessing over it, even, wanting to know their motivation for doing so, whether it was just to humble him or if he's actually been caught up in some department-wide conspiracy. because obviously, they had to have known that he never stood a chance - not with none of the intel, anyway. this resentment is fueling him as he competes with the other grymm for a second shot at collection.

HOW DO THEY LOOK LIKE/DRESS LIKE IN THE AFTER?

when he was alive, his style was bolder, more in-your-face. it originated from being a chronically underestimated driver (due to his background). he had to force people to pay attention to him. and then it evolved into a more genuine investment in his appearance, because he had attracted a bit too much attention. if there would always be pictures of him online after any public appearance, he had resolved to make them look good. it was mostly about control. in the afterlife, his personal style has been pared down significantly. it's more minimalist, sticking to dark colors and neutral tones, to semi-formal clothes that are simple and elegant. he has a few pieces of statement jewelry that he'll rotate out, he finds the weight of them comforting.

ANY NOTABLE RELATIONSHIPS WITH NPCS AT THE DEPARTMENT?

in the wake of his failure to reap psyche, i can see him having probed chief swan and even condor for any information they might have as to why he was selected for that mission in lieu of one of them. for what he might've found out (or - more likely - not found out), i'll have to ask the mods!

he still really likes watching movies. his bardo has an extensive collection of physical media, including DVDs and videotapes. when he was alive and at the height of his career, he'd semi-regularly rent out an entire theater just so he could have the experience of going to the movies without the sound of people whispering about him in the nearby rows. he doesn't skew to a particular genre, but some of his all-time favorites include: babylon (1980), akira (1988), the prestige (2006), jiro dreams of sushi (2011), creed (2015), phantom thread (2017)

probably french, because he has a loose, conversational understanding of saint lucian creole, which his mother often spoke to him when he was young. he also spent a lot of time in monaco when he was alive.
