Hellena noticed the shorter marine on her way through town. It was obvious he wasn’t feeling well. She’d seen enough sick people to tell.
“Excuse me, are you feeling alright?”
“Huh?” Coby looked up, surprised. He had been focusing on standing and walking steadily too much to notice that someone had approached him. But damn, his luck didn’t seem too good today. Out of all people it had to be her.
“Oh, yes. Just a bit of a headache. I probably haven’t slept enough.”
Time Out
Helmeppo couldn't help but laugh at the story. He had a few stories of his own, so he might need to share one later. He almost didn't notice they had arrived at the town. The blond had been too busy admiring his friend's smile. It was nice just listening to Coby talk. The captain was always so enthusiastic, the same as when they had first met. Even then he cared a lot about his best friend, despite how hard he tried not to show it. But the past also kept him from doing a lot. He felt so guilty for even being related to Morgan, and especially for what he did to Coby.
Helmeppo pushed those thoughts out of his head as they entered the town. It was a little past noon, so he decided to suggest lunch. "Do you want to grab lunch? There's a place a few stores down that seemed good,"
Just when Helmeppo had mentioned food, Coby realized that his stomach was indeed empty. That was what he got for staying up all night to sneakily work on papers. But at the same time he wasn't feeling too hungry; probably because of his tiredness.
“Yeah, that sounds great! I could definitely need something to chew on.” The pink-haired boy laughed, covering his fatigue with cheerfulness. They didn't really had many chances to spend time together outside of work - not that they really had much freetime to begin with. The more reason for the captain to not spoil the fun for his most trusted friend.
Treasure Hunt
⊱✿⊰— A small drop of sweat made its appearance at the sound of his first question. Being friends with this specific male? No, she wouldn’t describe their relations by using such an easy term. It was more complicated than that. Even she was confused about the whole matter but not really bothered as far as things won’t grow dangerously.
“No, I would not say that. We are not really friends or enemies since his demeanor is rather— ambiguous.” She retorted in solemn manner whilst fighting to keep a positive facial expression with a small smile.
Thin brows furrowed momentarily before arching in amusement. The word treasure could only bring excitement to one crew-mate of hers and this person would be Nami. Whenever there is treasure, this female is involved.
“And no, I am not the one at fault this time. I shall make a fair guess and say that one of my Nakama might be behind this.”
“I would have been honestly surprised, seeing how stern and stubborn Vice Admiral Smoker can be regarding pirates.” The boy laughed amusedly, trying to imagine a Smoker being friendly with his enemies and drinking tea. Speaking of friendly, Coby was wondering if he had ever seen the older Marine laugh.
“Cat Burglar Nami, right? Well, if possible I’d like you to tell her to stop. The citizens are really scared to go outside and there had been quite some damage done to the town already. Otherwise I will have to arrest the Straw Hat Pirates.” Not that Coby was confident in defeating their captain let alone the whole crew. But duties were duties and he had a mission to fulfill.
❝ Oh no... ❞ The young boy muttered. Pain in the limbs, headaches and dizziness. He hadn’t checked his body temperature for fever yet, but pretty sure he was on the best way to get sick. Just don’t let anyone notice or else everyone will think he’s a whiny wimp.
One has come aboard!

"Oi! Long time no see Coby, how’s gramps been treating ya?"
Luffy casually approached the Marine Captain, with there thankfully being no other marines around to possibly report what was going on… Or if there was, Luffy would be quick to use Conqueror’s Haki to knock them out. Still, it was a relief to see a familiar face in the New World even if said face was on the enemy side.
"Luffy!!" The Marine Captain called out, being just as happy as the other to see his friend again. A brief glance over his shoulder to ensure that none of his crew was around except for Helmeppo - after all the latter would at least understand and tolerate that his captain was talking friendly with a pirate.
Duties
An island protected by the Marines. That was where Coby's mission had led him. It wasn't really big but on the other hand very peaceful. The inhabitants had neither too much nor too little. Or that was how it was until an emergency call reached the HQ. Apparently there had been pirates wrecking havoc in the town.
The Marine Captain had just arrived on the island a while ago but instead of resting after the long journey, he felt like he needed to talk to the inhabitants first. He wanted to make sure he wasn't arriving too late or maybe someone needed his help right now? Walking through the rather vivid street, the pink-haired boy approached people randomly, asking them various questions. "Good day to you, Mister. May I have a bit of your time?" He asked politely the tall blond he had spotted just now.
⌈ ☂ ⌋ “HOW CAN ANYONE INSULT THE SHADE OF OUR HAIR!?! They’re tasteless idiots!”
"I don't think anyone has insulted my hair color before. They always said I look like a lollipop or cotton candy... Not sure if those are meant as taunts or compliments, though..."
"... ... Have you been drinking, Mik?"
(❀) It really has been two years and she was glad that everyone was fine, despite being more powerful than before. Tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear, she looked at Coby and remembered that he used to train under Luffy’s grandfather who was acting just like his grandson, much to her amusement.
"Well.. you know Luffy, boring doesn’t suit him good",the older woman giggled softly behind her hand."So how have you been, Coby-san?"
"Please drop the '-san', no need for formalities between friends, right?" Despite his request, he was rather shy to ask her, not quite certain if she was even wanted to have that kind of friendly relationship with a marine.
"I've been fairly good. I finally managed to become a Marine Captain but there's still a long way to go for me. It seems like I still have to catch up with Luffy and everyone." Being aware of his own weaknesses was the first step to become stronger; Coby knew that, though maybe it's more like rooted in his personality to be self-deprecating.
Treasure Hunt
⊱✿⊰— Just the mere mentioning of her captain’s name was enough to bring a smile on her rosy lips, hence this man’s track of thoughts regarding their occupations.
“How delighting news to learn. The fact that pirates are friends with the Marines does not strange me out. In fact, I do have some sort of connections with Vice Admiral Smoker.”
”And Luffy is— somewhere around the town, for sure. What is the purpose of your visit though?”
"Oh, you are friends with Vice Admiral Smoker?" He beamed with surprise and joy, his eyes seemingly lightening up. Coby wasn't particularly close with Smoker, but he had heard of him and he respected the older Marine greatly. The more reason for the young boy to be happy to hear that his friend's comrades were on good terms with popular and strong Marines as well.
"Oh right!" His mission, he almost forgot about that! "Apparently there has been a pirate crew, who terrorize the poor inhabitants because of a treasure hidden somewhere on the island. I'm supposed to arrest said pirates." Coby tilted his head to the side, letting his thoughts wander for a bit before a sudden realization hit him. "Oh no... Don't tell me you're the one who--" He didn't even dared to finish the sentence.
"Yeah. I know." He’d tried to get the other’s attention several times to tell him, but never could. "I tried to tell you…"
Was it only his imagination or did the blond seem rather... disappointed?
"I'm really sorry, Helmeppo. I know overworking is a bad habit of mine. I'll try to fix that."
(❀) Tapping her chin as she thought about what an old lady had told her, the archaeologist glanced around before she heared her name, turning her head.
"Oh you are Luffy’s friend, right? Coby-san?",Robin spoke up, flashing the younger man a soft smile."It’s been a long time since I last saw you at Water 7 with Garp-san."
"Yes, two years to be exact." The boy laughed sheepishly, scratching the back of his head. It was always a delight to see familiar faces now and then again. Especially when it came to the Straw Hats.
"I have read about the Straw Hats' comeback. Flashy as ever, you guys were all over the newspaper. I was looking forward to meet everyone in the New World again."
⊱✿⊰— Even if her memory was known to be one of the best, much to her own luck, his physical appearance didn’t ring a bell. She could recall Luffy’s grandfather in her mind but other than that, she couldn’t remember further details.
“I do remember, barely but—It would be impolite of me to pretend, right?”
"Oh. Well... I guess so?" That was one way to look at it and Coby had to admit that not everyone was brave and nice enough to not deceive. "I'm a good friend of Luffy even though I'm a marine. Speaking of Luffy... that you're here means he must be somewhere close, too right?"
"Sure. We can stop if we see anything." He was relieved his friend hadn’t noticed how embarrassed he had been. The blonde stuck his hands in his pockets as they walked out. Helmeppo couldn’t think of anything to say to the other. They were almost always together, so he couldn’t think of a good conversation topic.
Good thing Coby was either too oblivious or too occupied with other thoughts to pay any attention to the many hints the other's behavior exposed. On any other occasion it was rather a curse for Helmeppo, though. This time was not different from all the other countless times they were together. It usually was Coby who would start talking about daily things, about the citizens of the last island they visited, about their dreams and ambitions, stories from the past-- and whenever there was nothing left to say, the pink-haired boy would just enjoy the presence of his friend. Silence between the men never felt awkward for him.
By the time Coby has finished his story about Garp's cookie disaster (in which Coby failed to protect the cookies from being eaten by Sengoku's goat), the two marines had already arrived at their destination.
⊱✿⊰—Just the attire of the young male alone made her arch a curious brow. What’s more to mention, the fact that he seemed delighted with her appearance. She couldn’t help but wonder how a Marine could feel this way towards a pirate.
“.. Excuse me?” She expressed her inner confusion with a question, not really familiar with the guy before her.
If Coby hadn't been so understanding, he would have been disappointed about the woman not recognizing him. "It's me Coby! We have met on Water 7 before!"
