Scarlet, second book of the Lunar Chronicles, Chapter 32, page 324. Thorne and Cinder are seeing the picture of Selene after the fire, and Thorne says, “Who would do this to a child?”
I feel like Thorne is constantly only seen as the pretty boy, a shallow, funny character. He deserves so much more credit.
He grew up with distant parents, and acted out because he wanted their attention. He is not a criminal just because, he just wanted people to notice him. And he’s a f*ckboy because he would rather be in the presence of a stranger than be alone.
In the series, the gang all witness some real, messed up, and gruesome sh*t. And Thorne is constantly lighting up the mood with jokes and wit. But he’s affect by it all, too.
Here he is, seeing the picture of a three year old girl, who has been burned beyond recognition, to the point where he can’t recognize that it is a younger version of the woman standing next to him. And while Cinder is worrying about how there are no scars marring her skin, except for around her prostheses, Thorne is disgusted, and horrified at the thought of Levana doing this to a three year old girl, and not just any young girl, the princess, her niece.
Thought Thorne is definetly a character with a large roll in being the comic relief, he is still going through hell with the rest of them. Still witnessing the monstrous things Levana is doing, still having to start a revolution alongside Cinder and the gang.
So Carswell Thorne is not just a detached, witty, self absorbed character, these characteristics are coping mechanisms for dealing with all the crap he is seeing as the world he knows, crumbles.
