Zutara Fic Recs

These are ones I’ve accumulated in my renewal of binge-reading Zutara that are at the top of my bookmark list; I’m sure there are many other amazing fics that I haven’t come across yet.

Anything from @botherkupo (Boogum on AO3) I love pretty much everything they write (ML included), so you can’t go wrong there. But specifically Just Improvise, Zuko’s Tiny Dilemma, and I Don’t Speak Meow Language are ones that I’ve really enjoyed. The author manages nicely between kind of cracky premises that really intrigue you, and serious heart-to-hearts that have you feeling soft by the end.

oracle bones by orphan_account - so far, this one is still my favorite Zutara soulmate AU to this day. The prose and dialogue really seal the deal.

Sunshowers and Souvenirs We Never Lose by @gabriel-agreste-has-no-rights (Taliax on AO3) - also happens to be another person from the ML fandom I really enjoy. Sunshowers is simply sweet and lovely, one guaranteed to make you smile, and whilst Souvenirs We Never Lose is not yet finished, I highly recommend you read it anyways. Post-war/canon Zutara that really starts off with a great foundation of friendship that of course develops. Seriously, it’s one worth investing in for sure.

and you feel your heart (taking root in your body) by @raisindeatre (same username on AO3) - this one is slow-burn post-war/canon, my favorite type of Zutara, and it’s fantastic.

i’m still here by @owedbetter (same on AO3) - I’m sure everyone recommends this one because you just can’t, but I have to join the crowd myself because how can you not. The way it’s interwoven with canon is spectacular, and every Zutara moment is amazing. It’s like re-watching the last episodes, but with more Zutara in all the best possible ways.

Brightest in the Dark by @soopersara (same on AO3) - I love a good Book 2 canon-divergence Zutara, and this one definitely hits the mark. It takes their trust, breaks it down, and builds it in an intimate and personal way. The author is still writing for them I believe, and I’m sure if this fic is any indication, all other the ones are great too.

such selfish prayers by @andromeda3116 (same on AO3) - now this one is a classic that I’m fairly certain most Zutara shippers know about and recommend by now. You can’t read for them and not read this one; it’s absolutely stunning. The storyline and politics already win you over by the time you get to any Zutara part, and the author really nails Katara’s character. Even if you’re not a Zutara fan, you really should read this story for the sake of a good post-war/canon fic about Katara that does her justice in all the right ways. (But all the Zutara moments are gifts in themselves too; they’re genuine and organic.)

Enscorcelled also by andromeda3116 - that’s all you need to know to read.

Blue on Blue by Dyce - definitely more spicy than any of the others, so if that’s not your cup of tea, then this might not be for you. But it’s still very geniunely sweet and romantic, and I love Bluetara.

on commitment by jdphoenix - another short and cute one; awkward turtle duck Zuko is present and blushing.

Five by nikkiRA - so far, best married/parents Zutara fic. It’s hilarious and domestically cute and fun, and the banter between Zuko and Katara is awesome. The way the author writes Zuko as a father is so utterly perfect and him, it’s ruined any other way for it to be done for me.

Okay, hopefully I’ve provided some possible new reading material for you guys…? And if not, I basically just got the chance to rave about some of my all-time favorite Zutara stories.

Hey so I’m currently looking for a Zutara fanfic and I can’t remember the name. I just vaguely remember the plot which was about how Zuko needed to get rid of his scar from saving Katarta from lightning because of Mai and Katara was traveling with him. If you could help out I would greatly appreciate it. 😊

I wasn’t going to respond to this, since I don’t really know what you’ve read/what you enjoy, but then I realized: I don’t actually have a list of fics I’ve read and enjoyed. Apparently that’s what happens when you join a fandom more than a decade late. So! Here’s a rundown of a few of the things I’ve read in the past year (pretty sure there’s no M ratings - that’s not really my thing either). 

A few that I’ve found on FFN (I prefer AO3 when I have a choice):

Stormbenders by Fandomme: I feel like this is one of the better-known ones, but I just found it a few months ago, and I binged it in a day. Book 3 Zutara in which Zuko and Katara have to go on a secret mission before they’ve really reconciled. Also the Three Chores series (Mending, Cooking, Gathering), and the Three Drinks series (A Girl’s Drink, A Man’s Drink, A Royal Drink) by the same author.

When the Mask Comes Off by Jamie Hasaku: Book 2 Blutara/Zutara. Kind of cheesy at times, but I enjoyed it.

Tempest in a Teacup by AkaVertigo: Katara is captured and raised in the Fire Nation. There’s an unfinished sequel (abandoned since 2006), but it’s still worth a read.

The Stalking Zuko series by emletish: Exactly what it sounds like. Katara stalks Zuko, shenanigans ensue. And I giggle. A lot. With two sequels! Not Stalking Zuko and Not Stalking Firelord Zuko

Avatar: The Final Conflict by ladyhawk89: Post ATLA. This one isn’t completed yet, but what’s there is wonderful, and I’m waiting anxiously for the next update. 

And my faves from AO3 (they may be on FFN too, but I haven’t checked):

i’m still here by owedbetter: Book 3 Zutara. This is just… gorgeous. Lovely. All the good things. Bring tissues. I cried, and it was SO worth it.

Fate Deferred by catie writes things: Zutara AU where Aang stayed frozen for 10 more years. Not completed yet, but WOW. I’m kind of in awe with the planning that must have gone into making the present-day scenes and the flashbacks work so well together.

Rumour Has It by FictionIsSocialInquiry: Blue Spirit/Painted Lady leading up to Zutara. Also not completed, but definitely worth watching for more.

you have the sun, I have the moon by mithrilstarlight: VERY late Book 2 - Book 3 Zutara. Zuko joins the Gaang at Ba Sing Se. Complete and a pretty good read!

so let us melt, and make no noise by LittleLostStar: Okay, so I lied. This one has an M rating, but SO FAR there hasn’t been anything to warrant that. It’s a very enjoyable story that’s sort of a Frozen cross over. Sort of.

The Worst Prisoner series by emletish: A sort-of canon rewrite in which Zuko joins the Gaang earlier. Much earlier. My roommate thinks I’m crazy because of how hard I laugh while reading this. Book 1 is complete, but Book 2 is still being updated. Also, The Road Not Taken (same author) is great. Short, and incomplete, I guess, but the two chapters that are there still tell a compelling story.

And… I’m not sure which one to list first, since I spent WAY too much time scrolling through the list of works by this author deciding what to read next, but all of these are written by Boogum: The Undying Fire series: Fire healers are a thing, and Zuko is one. It’s not complete, but it’s GOOD.  Following Blue: Book 2 Blutara/Zutara. Apparently this is an older work, but it’s still well-done and worth a read. Zuko’s Tiny Dilemma: Zuko reverts to the size of a six-year old, and Iroh turns into a teapot. Somehow this premise works? I expected to nope out from sheer weirdness early on, but… no, it actually fits, and it’s surprisingly deep. I Don’t Speak Meow Language: Katara turns into a cat, and Zuko is an animal person. Definitely on the humorous side, but it also manages to be fun without being too silly or unbelievable. The Little Adventures of Katara (And One Giant Prince): Katara is tiny, Zuko is not. Only one chapter published so far, but if Zuko’s Tiny Dilemma and I Don’t Speak Meow Language are any indication, this will be a silly premise done very right.

Also… if I can self promo a tad, my fanfic, A Tale of Ice and Smoke (AO3 | FFN) is going to be Zutara as well (although I’m thinking of updating the tags to something like #theSLOWESTburn because… yeah, it’ll be a while). It’s a full canon rewrite with Katara and Aang as the Avatar(s) (explanation for how that happened coming in Chapter 10/11). I’m currently working on my version of “Imprisoned”, and that should be posted in the next few weeks. Of course, if that’s not your cup of tea, no pressure. I hope someone can find something they haven’t seen before in my little list.

Rounding the Edges - sadladybug (Summary: It can take some grit and hard work to grind out the sharp edges, but the effort can produce something that shines. A oneshot in which Katara learns a few new things about Zuko, including the fact that he may be very difficult to live without. Featuring unexpected teamwork, tense training moments, and more than a few awkward conversations.)

Once Around the Sun - eleventy7 (Summary: Later, Katara can see how it all fell apart. Azula in her cell, growing roses; Zuko surrounded by enemies, slowly dying; their friends in the Earth Kingdom, safely escaping. And herself at the centre of it, saving lives and breaking promises. Set after finale, eventual Zutara.)

The Descent - chromeknickers (Summary: The Fire Prince had died young—too young. But what’s more was she was the one who killed him. Now Katara must find her enemy in the terrifying mist of the Spirit World. In life and death, their souls have become inextricably bound, and Katara will do anything to bring Zuko home. [S1 story])

Haunted - Advocaat (actually anything by her) Sunmary: Immediately postwar. Katara is dead. But that doesn’t mean she’s gone. Join Zuko as he struggles through day to day life as Fire Lord with his very own phantom menace. Zutara. Oneshot (has a happy ending)

All complete, all wonderful.

Actually, I think I still found one to add:

Mending Wounds by  FictionIsSocialInquiry  S2 AU, post-Chase. While lost in the Foggy Swamp, searching for her brother and her Avatar, Katara is haunted by visions of the Fire Nation’s disgraced prince. Visions of peace after war, visions of honour and secrets...Katara has some interesting visions in the Swamp).

And I know you said no M-rating (which is also my usual preference), but I very highly recommend Southern Lights by colourwhirled. It does have a little bit of smut in it, but it’s fairly minimal compared to the overall plot, which is hitting all the high notes for me, with great Zuko-Katara enemies to friends to lovers dynamics, awesome crossbending and a good political plot.

1) Derek loves Stiles, which we already knew but it’s great hearing him say it.

2) Dylan and Hoechlin have absolutely nothing against Sterek. Matter of fact, it seems like Hoechlin himself loves the idea of Sterek (whether it’s as a BROTP or OTP) and I’m pretty sure Dylan feels the same.

3) Hoechlin appreciates the Sterek fandom very much.

4) He highkey just shut Posey’s comment down without actually saying the name.

Now that the show’s over, he no longer has any fucks to give and can say what he wants to say and I love that.

Steve ends up softly crying into buckys neck begging for his daddy to make the bad feeling go away

Awwwwwh! Imagine though, Bucky asking Steve if he thinks it’s a good idea for him to watch the film, and Steve says, “I’ll be fine, it’s just a film.”

Bucky isn’t sure so he sits close to Steve, wrapping an arm around Steve’s waist. For the first part, Steve is okay.

But when all the creepy stuff starts happening? He leans closer into Bucky and soon he’s hiding his face in Bucky’s neck, sniffling. He’s got his legs thrown over Bucky’s lap and his hands and clutching and Bucky’s hands, shaking ever so slightly.

“Stevie,” Bucky whispers while Clint jumps in the background and knocks his popcorn everywhere as something scary happens.

Steve whimpers and it’s not a good whimper. Not the whimper he makes when he’s feeling good. No, it’s sad and desperate, heartbroken.

“I don’t like it, daddy,” he whimpers, crying softly. Whenever Steve gets to feeling good or bad, Bucky becomes daddy because daddy looks after him.

Not that Bucky doesn’t. He does, by god he does.

“Stevie. I’m here, daddy is here,” Bucky says protectively.

But Steve starts crying in earnest. Loud, hiccuping sobs. Tony pauses the film and the team look to Steve who’s hiding in Bucky’s chest.

Steve’s mumbling incoherent words, “…loud too loud. Guns, like guns. Scary. Bucky falls. Alone. Alone.”

Bucky tugs Steve closer and Steve hiccups over a loud cry and clutches on to Bucky.

“Shhh baby, I’m here,” Bucky says. “Baby, I’m right here. No one is gonna hurt you. I’m right here sweetheart.”

Tony turns the film off the moment Bucky growls at him. The team try to help but Bucky won’t let them come near Steve.

“Daddy,” Steve mewls. The team stare. They don’t know what to do.

“Stevie, come on let’s go up to bed,” Bucky says gently, picking the trembling man up. “I love you darlin’.”

Steve nods and latches onto Bucky, hiding his face in Bucky’s neck. They go up to bed and the rest of the team are worried but they don’t know what to do.

“Bucky,” Natasha says, “look after him, please.”

Bucky paused and nodded at her before taking Steve up to their room to look after him.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN IM IN "DENIAL"?!?!

That episode killed me and revived me all at the same time and I only have Matt and Harry to blame. However the ending Malec scene was amazing and beautiful that I'm not even mad about how they split ways.... BECAUSE I REFUSE TO BELIEVE THEY ARE BROKEN UP!!!!!! To me I saw this as they are taking a *pause* I feel like Magnus understood why Alec did what he did, yet he has to make the decision to step away from Alec to fulfill his responsibilities as a leader for his people (which is what they are trying to do). However he still loves him and is only making this decision for all the down worlders; not him personally not wanting to be with Alec. And that's what I loved about that scene was that they aren't *taking a break* for unreasonable conflicts, but for something that's really important which is protecting the ones they love. With that being said MALEC IS NOT BREAKING UP!!!! THEY ARE TAKING A BREAK!!!!
