its march
Hey, adults of the world
How about instead of making kids terrified to ever fuck up
You teach them how to cope with the aftermath of fucking up and fix it as best they can
That way they’re not so overwhelmed with anxiety every time there’s even so much as a chance of making mistakes that they never try anything and dread making decisions because of it
When I was in college (English and Education), our Advisor sat us all down and said, “We need to teach kids how to fail.”
We were all like “Wut.” (Except this was the 90s, and nobody had invented “Wut” yet. A later generation did that.)
We don’t teach kids how to fail. We expect them to succeed at everything in school (which is why P.E. is so unpopular, because that can’t work in competition), and then we send them out into the world with that same expectation.
So they hit their first obstacle, and they fall apart.
I know. I did.
Um…rather badly.
I teach my daughter that the truly successful person is not someone who always succeeds. A successful person is someone who knows how to recover from failure.
No failure is a total failure unless you fail to learn from it.
Don’t waste a good failure, don’t throw away the opportunity to figure out what went wrong and learn from it.
This is a very good addition to a very old post. It’s okay to fuck up. Everybody fucks up. 99% of the time it won’t ruin anyone’s day. 99% of the time you can use it to improve. 99% of the time the situation can be salvaged. 100% of the time, you are going to be okay. You will get past it.
It’s too late for me to learn this from scratch, but we need to make sure younger people have the chance to go through life (but education especially) being too afraid to try because the possibility of failure feels like the end of the world.
Listen, 99% of adults are walking around guessing at shit and waiting for someone to tell them they are wrong, if no one does they assume they guessed right and move on.
What’s it like not having debilitating anxiety – made worse if not caused by, yep, the way the last generation of adults treated you as a kid – and automatically assuming you’ve fucked up even when people tell you you ARE doing okay, just wondering?? Miss me with this.
As vocabulary is reduced , so are the number of feelings you can express, the number of events you can describe, the number of the things you can identify! Not only understanding is limited, but also experience. Man grows by language. Whenever he limits language he retrogresses!

Im fucking crying
when u gotta remind people who tf theyre talking to
“You’re too old for that.”
Is really a shitty concept. You’re too old for everything. Cartoons, sleepovers, candy, etc. Basically, you’re too old for fun. You shouldn’t be too old for fun ever in your life. If you want to watch cartoons, do it! If you want to have sleepovers, do it!
CS Lewis famously said that the intrusive desire to appear grown up all costs was in of itself a childish trait that secure adults should’ve grown out of it.
He worded it that “When I was young I hid my love of fairy tails for fear of ridicule, now that I’m 50 I read them openly”
