"We haven't spent that much time together."
"True as that may be, I’ve personally seen you in Flint’s lap, gazing like a love struck child. And I can’t trust Flint’s little girl to sell my ‘goods’ at top price and not undersell me at his whims."
"Shih loves you, I wouldn't worry."
"Y-yeah. Yeah, I know." Ash almost groaned, brow furrowed in confusion. What was Billy doing, saying something like that? Where was the whining about his last remark, the insult in return, the almost robot like comment about how things like that aren’t necessary. "I know that, i’m not worrying!" He repeated, force in his voice as took a small step back. "Don’t you think I know that, you fucking lummox? Calling me in here, don’t you have work to do?!" Ash barked, leaving Billy’s office in a hurry, rushing back to his own. "What the hell is wrong with me…"
//Yeah, hi, i'm back. ...Feel like I don't belong here, to be honest, but still.
Games
The Caribbean sun was warm that day but, for once, not in a volatile manner that would lead to sunburned faces and heat stroke for the crew of the Jagannath. It seemed that the higher ups were in a magnanimous mood, and so they had dropped anchor in a sheltered cove for day in order to give the crew a rest before making sail for Port Royal and every pirate aboard seemed to be enjoying themselves.
"That was pathetic!"
"I’d like ter see ye do better!"
Ching Shih grinned as she watched a few of the men she had become well acquainted with as they worked high in the rigging of the enormous ship wrestle with each other. As usual, they were all seated amongst the beams and ropes of the sails, but as there was no work to do they had taken to a slightly dangerous but no less fun game of leaping off the boons and into the water below. It was warm and if not done properly would sting on impact, but they were all experienced pirates and swimmers and knew better than to simply flop into the almost glass like surface below. Flips, jumps, spins were all added and soon many were beginning to resemble birds as they performed aerial acrobatics on their way down while being cheered on by their crew mates and a noisy, chittering Tiao. Currently, two were wrestling, trying to push the other and utterly failing. Finally, the reluctant man turned and dove in with as much grace as a drunken sailor on land. Everyone released an ‘ooh’ at the slapping sound, but laughed when he surfaced unharmed.
"Let’s see you have a go at it, Ching!"
"Unless that pussy o’ yours made you a pussy!"
The female pirate rolled her eyes and shook her head, standing and setting aside her affects while there was a small round of applause. However it seemed that the activity had finally caught the attention of the captain and he was either coming to join or coming to end the game - and judging by the look on his face, Shih guessed it was to end it. Never one to back down from a challenge (and not in front of Asheq, whom she had been rather displeased with ever since an incident involving too much rum and Billy Bones), she backed up as she shouted a dirty joke to the Chinese pirates in their native tongue - earning her a robust bout of laughter - as someone shouted a warning. Turning, and feigning fear for a moment before once again grinning, she tipped over only to spin several times backwards before plunging into the depths as smoothly as a king fisher diving for it’s prey.
"They're having fun, sir."
"Mhmm."
"You should be having some as well, sir."
"Yes, because the captain is a great addition to a simpletons game. Go find me a damned musket."
Josiah sighed, crossing his python like arms over his chest, almost sounding like a growl as he glared at his captain's back and turned away to leave. Asheq leaned against the railing, arms crossed over each other, watching a good number of his crew play about as others on the beach had their own fun in their own tent. A man found pleasure where he could get it, he supposed, even with other men. He'd had a personal hand in recruiting a great deal of them, but there were few he truly cared about. Means to an end did not equal friendship. Scratching at his chin, he watched one of the few that he had considered fly into the water like she was born there. And it annoyed him.
She had no right to fun when he was made to feel like this. They'd both played tricks on each other, teased one another. It was in good fun. He hadn't even done anything to her, simply teased her. The problem had been that Bones bastard. He had a right to be angry, to take it out on the source. It was one thing to poke fun, it was another to fully disrespect a strong captain. She could be as angry as she wanted, the fool had deserved the beating he got. He had nothing to feel 'guilty' over.
"An - uh… An ex of mine. Someone you wouldn’t like, Shih." Ash wasn’t really a man of conventions and stereotypes, but the way his father acted had still stuck with him. A wall of indomitable strength and stubborn optimism. It’s part of what drove him to move to the US, simply believing it’d work out, not bothering to listen to his family. He didn’t believe in showing weakness when he felt it. That was something that you would need to conquer on your own. And he beat this into Ash since he was a child. To show weakness was to be weak. To show strength to was to be strong.
A crazy ex. It made significant sense and she supposed it made sense with how gorgeous and funny he was, but what she did not understand was why it should be a deterrent. Shih had known some pretty fucked up girls, especially when she had worked as a stripper during her undergrad, and immediately she was filled with questions. However, she could not so much as utter a syllable at the look on Asheq’s face. That was not an expression she was familiar with and it was heartbreaking, and she could not resist taking a step closer as she fought the urge to embrace him.
"Why would I not want to date you because of an ex?" she asked, voice softer, but firm.
"She might hurt you. She's come after women before. Occasional ...accidents. They're always so conveniently timed, I-I know it's her. I- Sorry. I'm sorry. We should just- Stick to what we've got and be happy, ya know? So much easier." It was his fault but it wasn't. But it was. He'd forget and get attached. He'd stop reminding himself that he wasn't allowed. That he was... hers. Whether he liked it or not. But maybe... Maybe she didn't know he was here. Ash's face had become somewhat haunted as he looked up to Shih. "I'll see ya at work." He was quiet as he turned, steps light, glancing about occasionally as if on the look out.
"Yeah. I like you too, I do. But I don’t think this’d work, to be honest. I’m kind of cursed." He couldn’t look directly at her as he rubbed at his neck, eyes shifting to the wall next to her. "Someone-… Someone else might not be okay with it."
Dark eyebrows raised in surprise, again caught off guard by his words and she wondered if perhaps there was someone still. She could not recall him talking about anyone, could not remember seeing pictures on his phone which had been stolen and she had taken pictures on numerous times, but the look on his face said it was not a secret girlfriend sort of thing. "Someone?"
"An-uh... An ex of mine. Someone you wouldn't like, Shih." Ash wasn't really a man of conventions and stereotypes, but the way his father acted had still stuck with him. "It isn’t. It’s actually right on time, if you think on it. I’ve honestly flirted with, and been flirted at by, a lot of women. But most of them have never really come out and said that. I-uh… Just didn’t expect to hear it. They all stopped just before this part." His voice was quiet as he looked to the ground. Maybe it wasn’t his fault.
"To be honest, Ash, I find that very hard to believe. You’re awesome, and funny, and sometimes sweet," she said, speaking honestly and teasing lightly. She was even more surprised, however, when she looked up to see him staring at the floor. "…. Are you okay? With this, I mean?"
"Yeah. I like you too, I do. But I don't think this'd work, to be honest. I'm kind of cursed." He couldn't look directly at her as he rubbed at his neck, eyes shifting to the wall next to her. "Someone-... Someone else might not be okay with it."

"… I want to be more than friends."
"I’ll be honest. Did not expect that."
Shih took a deep, shaky breath and sighed. She would have thought it would have been obvious but she supposed it would have been easy for anyone to misconstrue their flirting as goofing off, but somewhere she had developed feelings and now she was quickly beginning to feel like an idiot.
"… I know it’s kinda outta the blue…"

“I think most of the reason why everyone in the fandom wants Mary Read is because they’re expecting her to be *trans and have a thing with Anne Bonny. And when it happens, or rather doesn’t happen, they’re gonna throw around a whole lot of -isms and -phobes because historically, Mary Read only pretended to be a man so that she could sail and did, in fact, fall in love with the opposite sex.”
