In the distant future, space travel will be possible exclusively via beautiful fireworks. We'll travel in the comfort of roomy lightbulb rockets.
Chapter 26: The Sinister Soothsayer || askharrykim & captainprotonsavestheuniverse
Harry took Tom’s advice— not that he didn’t look dashing in his Buster costume, of course. He’d gotten several compliments on it, actually. But he stuck out like a sore thumb, out of uniform.
He traversed the ship without incident, and took up a watchful stance by the door of Holodeck 2. Rule #47 stated that— outside of a truly emergent situation— Captain Proton always entered the scene first. And Harry always tried to follow the rules. Just like he really did try to stay in character.
It was more fun that way, and Tom had put in a lot of work to make this whole thing possible. Like.. kind’ve an insane amount of work, really.
Tom rounded the corner on the tail end of a light jog, one hand steadying his trademark over-sized space goggles. He broke into a truly pleased smile at the sight of his friend dressed to the retro-nines, albeit in dazzling technicolor. The Fair Haven village program the crew favored was a work of art in its own right, but the Captain Proton series was a different beast and a deeply personal endeavor at that. Years ago, when Tom had first conceived what he thought of as a cultural experiment, he hadn't really expected Harry to join him. And certainly not with such gusto and period appropriate melodrama. He would never say it aloud, but the participation meant a lot to him. In a subtle show of thanks, he had steadily improved upon Buster Kincaid's character until he was nearly as integral to each chapter as Captain Proton himself. Nearly. I mean, it's not as if he deserved his own rocketship. That's a lot of responsibility for a sidekick. "Sorry, I'm late." He tugged on the hem of his bomber jacket and stood up straighter. Cleared his throat. "Couldn't find my control panel. B'Elanna put it in my sock drawer. As if a complicated piece of technology like this should be so mishandled." He tucked his chin to scrutinize the chest panel, and then carefully adjusted the right knob to MAXIMUM. "That's better." "You ready?"
Oh, look! Friends.
//thanks for the promo, Doc! And a hello to my new followers!
Harry. You realize we've left the brave Constance Goodheart frozen mid-maidenly scream for weeks now! Chapter 26? The Sinister Soothsayer? I don't know how much longer I can convince B'Elanna to safeguard our pause in the buffer. Sooner or later, someone's going to override our little bookmark, and we'll have to start from the beginning. And you hate snakes. Especially giant papier-mâché snakes suspended from fishing wire.
"That’s awfully unheroic of us," Harry agreed. Once the turbolift was empty. He still hadn’t quite managed to live down that whole Chaotica Affair, even if Tom seemed unphased by the subtle repercussions. The crew were just bored— but that didn’t make the snickering any easier to deal with.
"And yeah— I’d rather not start over. I hate doing retakes. You free tonight?"
Harry winced at the story— he’d been on the receiving end of enough of Seven’s ‘helpful advice’ for commiseration to outweigh amusement. Though, he did agree that a field medic/nurse should probably know where a patient’s heart was, at the very least.
"I’ll see what I can come up with— between cursing the heavens and rending my garment, of course," he said, deadpan. "It’ll be a spectacle. Truly horrible. You should just be on time, spare everyone the ordeal."
With a short laugh— he never could hold that expression long, not with Tom— he clapped Tom on the shoulder.
"21:00? Give yourself enough lee-way for a firefight."
"That's my trusty sidekick! So accommodating." Tom gave Harry a double shoulder pat of camaraderie and moved to the lift doors as they opened onto Deck 5. "Wish me luck." He straightened his collar and stepped through, then spun on heel addressing Harry as the doors closed. "Oh! And your Buster attire is mandatory this go, Harry. I'll... understand if you have to take the Jefferies tubes." Wink.
"I need to see you in my office, now."
Tom looked up from the PADD he had been focusing on. Blinked slowly at Harry. Raised his coffee cup. Sip. "Your office.”
Agitated, Harry relented and sat across from Tom. With his elbows braced on the table, he hunched forward, his voice low.
"I think someone has been spying on me.”
Tom set the PADD aside with a clack and leaned in to mirror Harry’s hunch. "Oh, really. What makes you say that?"
Harry drew a deep breath, and revealed the horror—
"Someone keeps unfolding all of my socks."
Tom's jaw dropped. "Your socks?" He gripped Harry by the shoulders, and shook him a little. Shake-a shake. "Who would do such a thing? Don't they know a proper crease insures that socks operate at peak efficiency?"
"I’m revoking your privileges."
Tom reeled away from the Talaxian, untying his brown-splotched apron with gusto and umbrage. He slung it over the ala carte counter. "You've got to be kidding me! Neelix, I thought Tom's Casserole Surprise was a big hit." He slumped his shoulders, casting baleful eyes over the smattering of reluctantly dining crewmen. "No one's even gotten to the surprise yet.."
"I need to see you in my office, now."

"I won’t allow it."
Tom narrowed his eyes. His voice was like ice. Cold, brittle. Unforgiving."Well. That’s just… too bad, Lieutenant." He lunged across the mess hall table. And slid Malcolm’s plate towards him, fork at the ready. “There’s not enough cake for everyone. You have to share.”
