At the risk of being redundant, my lordâ we all began as something else.
It is our way. But it is good to see you here. Â There are a great many who need your services.Â

Vaakoâs eyebrows rose and he gave a quiet snort. âIs there something I can do for you, Purifier?â He narrowed his shadowed hazel eyes to meet the priestâs own darkened gaze then locked his fingers around the slender manâs wrist.Â
He did not flinch, or pull away. When one was restrained in mind and soul, the interruption of bodily movement paled.
"You seem inordinately tense, my lord," Samael repiled. "Would you care to unburden yourself?"

Haven't you ever had any... Doubts?
"I havenât had time for doubts in a very long time, Samael," Vaako said as he sat down along the outer edge of the great hall. He let out a quiet sigh as the new soon to be converts were brought through the Necropolis. "I believe in Threshold and the Underverse. The Lord Marshal will open the way. I will see it in my lifetime. Donât you believe that?"Â
Samael bent his head, and took a deeeeeeep breath. Pain might be long behind him, but each new convert sat in his soul like a cancer. He laid his arm along the low stone wall behind them, and leaned slightly toward his partner in Abomination.
"Doubt is the mark of True Intelligence, my Lord," he breathed, low enough not to be marked by their fellow Necromongers.
"I had my doubts in the beginning, but Iâve been here for four years now. Iâve seen and done so much in service to the Faith. I could not be as successful as I am if I doubted what I was doing." Vaako knew he sounded like a fanatic, and in many ways he knew he was one. But to hear Samael asking him about doubt and then saying it was a good thing was a shock.Â
"Youâre trying to test me, arenât you? Is this something they have the priests doâŚhmm? You work your way through the ranks to find out what the Legion Vast believes to ensure loyalty?"Â
"In part," he sighed, and leaned back a little. "Mostly, it is to settle my own conscience, that I ask."

Tom looked up from the PADD he had been focusing on. Blinked slowly at Harry. Raised his coffee cup. Sip. "Your office.â
Agitated, Harry relented and sat across from Tom. With his elbows braced on the table, he hunched forward, his voice low.
"I think someone has been spying on me.â
Tom set the PADD aside with a clack and leaned in to mirror Harryâs hunch. "Oh, really. What makes you say that?"Â
Harry drew a deep breath, and revealed the horror--
"Someone keeps unfolding all of my socks."
"I need to see you in my office, now."
Tom looked up from the PADD he had been focusing on. Blinked slowly at Harry. Raised his coffee cup. Sip. "Your office.â
Agitated, Harry relented and sat across from Tom. With his elbows braced on the table, he hunched forward, his voice low.
"I think someone has been spying on me."
Harry. You realize we've left the brave Constance Goodheart frozen mid-maidenly scream for weeks now! Chapter 26? The Sinister Soothsayer? I don't know how much longer I can convince B'Elanna to safeguard our pause in the buffer. Sooner or later, someone's going to override our little bookmark, and we'll have to start from the beginning. And you hate snakes. Especially giant papier-mâchÊ snakes suspended from fishing wire.
"Thatâs awfully unheroic of us," Harry agreed. Once the turbolift was empty. He still hadnât quite managed to live down that whole Chaotica Affair, even if Tom seemed unphased by the subtle repercussions. The crew were just boredâ but that didnât make the snickering any easier to deal with.
"And yeahâ Iâd rather not start over. I hate doing retakes. You free tonight?"
Tom frowned, the oscillating lights of the descending turbolift flickering over his face. âRelatively free. Doc has me cramming for a comparative xeno-biology drill. Did you know the Bolian heart is on the right side of the body? Because I didnât.â He crossed his arms and snorted derisively, shoulders hunched. âAccording to the Doctor, Iâm medical malpractice incarnate. Over one mistake! Seven was within earshot of my dressing down, so of course she offered to help correct my malfunction.â He snapped his fingers. âOh! And I have dinner with BâElanna at 18:00 sharp. But that shouldnât take long. Unless Iâve forgotten some sort of relationship milestone. In which case, I leave you my model car collection, and I expect a truly moving eulogy. Not a dry eye in the house, you hear me?âÂ
Harry winced at the story-- he'd been on the receiving end of enough of Seven's 'helpful advice' for commiseration to outweigh amusement. Though, he did agree that a field medic/nurse should probably know where a patient's heart was, at the very least.
"I'll see what I can come up with-- between cursing the heavens and rending my garment, of course," he said, deadpan. "It'll be a spectacle. Truly horrible. You should just be on time, spare everyone the ordeal."
With a short laugh-- he never could hold that expression long, not with Tom-- he clapped Tom on the shoulder.
"21:00? Give yourself enough lee-way for a firefight."

A familiar set of beeps and the setting changed. TâPolâs less than spacious quarters aboard the NX-01. She wore her usual uniform, and was looking over a PADD before her gaze fell on Harry.
"Ensign Kim." Her program had not created her likeness any less formal or off-putting. "I informed you at our last meeting that you had successfully learned the Vulcan Nerve Pinch. Unless you have already forgotten the technique."
The concept that he was annoying a hologramâ other than the Doctorâ was a little beyond him. And so, when offered, he sat. Gratefully, even.
"Itâsâ" he paused; embarrassing? Well. Work through it, Harry. "I fell in love. With a hologramâ at least I though she was a hologram," he added, and looked at the floor. "It doesnât actually matter that she wasnât, I thinkâ not in the long run. I lashed out at my friends, and my colleagues. I let myself be distracted from my duty."
Harry looked at her, disappointment written clear on his face.
"I failed myself, and my crew."
Restraint, restraint. "A⌠hologram?"  Her skyward eyebrows only half expressed her consternation.  TâPol could not imagine an individual developing romantic attachment to what she knew to be âhologramsâ.  But then again, humans sometimes⌠ she had heard before of crewmen on the Enterprise discussing some of Earthâs more strange phenomenon during the 21st Century- humans growing attached to inanimate objects, claiming romantic desires for other mammal species.  Truly astounding. "An officerâs duty is first to his Captain, crew and ship, Ensign.  An Officer should maintain only professional relationships, unless they are otherwise prepared.  Which it seems you were not."  That infamous Vulcan belittling.  TâPol was relatively positive she had interpersonal relations down.  "For your⌠residual effects; a disassociation of memories and feeling from the hologram,"  some lingering disbelief, "should assist."
Despite a wince at her simple-- and deserved-- condemnation, Harry nodded. That was why he'd come here, after all. For guidance, not absolution.
"I agree-- that's why I came to you," he said. "Though my concern is more for the future, rather than the lasting effects of this encounter-- I mean, not this, but um--" he stopped, and cleared his throat. "It would benefit me, to be able to recognize and isolate these kinds of impulses, should the need arise."

Harry almost flinched at the residual animosity on her face, but he steeled himself and walked into the room. There was something foreboding about the sound of the door sliding closed behind him, though, and he swallowed.
"Captainâ I hope Iâm not interrupting."
Janeway closed her eyes for a moment and blew some air out of her nose. Composing herself, she fixed a smile on her face and looked back at Harry.Â
"Mr. Kim, what can I do for you?"
Right. Stay calm, Harry. Stay focused.
"Right-- ah," he swallowed, and straightened his back a little. "Neelix had suggested a while back---" oh, right, like that's ever the start of any thing good... "That we all try and find ways to bolster crew morale."
He took a deep breath.
"I'm not a virtuoso or anything-- but I was thinking maybe we could have a concert."
