He watched the pair quietly as the nurse tried to coax her assistant from the doorway, as if he were some frightened turbofox instead of a functioning mecha. He didn’t blame her as he noted how hestitant the younger mech was, even when he finally did come out of hiding. It all made sense when the mech spoke his name.
Sunstreaker.
Ultra Magnus nearly gave himself whiplash when he jerked at the sudden flow of information that his processor supplied to him. The data was more than likely outdated, as he was never updated when he was brought back online, but the words supplied were enough for his spark to twist painfully in its chamber.
He hardly noticed the nurse was gone now, optics set on the golden warrior at his berthside.
“We looked for you,” he said, voice stern but an underlining need for Sunstreaker to know. He was sure no one told him, not with the way he hestitated at the door. “Your brother, the soldiers — we looked, but couldn’t find you.”
He didn’t know why he felt it was so important, but he couldn’t stop — it was both desperate and terrifying.
Sunstreaker flinched before he could prevent it from happening. His optics lowered, as though he found the floor more fascinating than the ex-Magnus. He wanted to close up the moment that his brother was brought into this, but found that as lonely and depressed as he felt, there was also a lingering frustration and annoyance as well.
Ultra Magnus pitied him.
He clung onto that, helm lifting and as did his gaze. He scowled and narrowed his optics, shoulders tensing up. "Obviously you didn't look hard enough," he snarled without the venom he wished was there. He just sounded exhausted.
"Then again, you had a spy in your ranks, right under your nose, and didn't notice -- shouldn't be surprised that you couldn't find me."

The youth’s groan had not gone unnoticed. It had been enough to bring Ultra Magnus’ attention to the warrior, noticing the pure rebellion in yellow paint.
The former Magnus almost smirked at the stubbornness and disregard of all things proper and noble. He’d known a youth just like that once upon a time, a young Cyberninja that did everything in his power to annoy Ultra Magnus to no end. It was nice to simply remember those days.
“It would be nice to have some company,” he replied, gaze turned from the younger mech to the femme. He shifted, despite the obvious pain the movement caused, and forced his frame to sit upright. “If it’s not too much trouble. I wouldn’t want to take him from his duties.”
Sunstreaker couldn't look more sour than he did in that moment.
"Oh no," the femme said, voice as cheery as it could possibly be. Fake, the mech thought, as fake cheery as it could possibly be. "It's no trouble at all! I'm sure he'd find it an honor to speak with you, Sir." She glanced over at the ex-soldier, motioning him forward with a servo. "Come on, then. Introduce yourself."
It was a moment that Sunstreaker felt dread for the first time in ages. Briefly, he pondered if Ultra Magnus would remember him, or if he would be treated differently if he did.
No, no one remembered Sunstreaker.
He stepped forward, moving into the room and fully into sight. He stopped next to the medibot, optics scanning over the form in front of him -- the Decepticon did a number on him, that much was certain.
"Sunstreaker," he said, voice raspy from disuse. "My name is Sunstreaker."
"Very good," the nurse chirped next to him, grabbing her datapads that she'd handed him, then scurrying off to the door. "I'll be back when I'm finished with my rounds. Play nice!"
And she left. Left Sunstreaker standing there awkwardly, with a former commander.

The new hospital room smelled of death. He knew that it was no one’s fault, it was simply how most of these infirmaries smelled, but it was a sickening reminder of what he’d nearly lost. He should be one of those corpses that left the stink in these halls and the private room.
At the moment, he stared out the window of the top floor, watching the lights from the city far from where he sat. He almost missed the liveliness of the planet, even though he’d never went to these parties and clubs. At least it wasn’t quiet, next to the wheezes of dying mecha in the next room over.
His head lifted and turned upon hearing his name, noting the young red and white femme that pranced into his room with the sweetest smile he’d ever seen. He knew her, she often paid him visits when no one else could, but her name slipped his processor.
“It is manageable,” he responded politely, even though it felt like his torso was on fire. He was a soldier and these were battle wounds, ones that were healing slowly, so it was nothing he couldn’t handle. “Although, I feel like I should note that it isn’t that late.”
He tried to smile but found himself unable to, not that it was surprising. He’d never been one to be able to show emotion outside of battle, which relied on rage and bravery.
“Are you already finished with your rounds this evening?” He had yet to notice the former soldier outside his door, focus solely on the fussy but friendly nurse.
She smiled and rolled her optics lightly, only to pick up a datapad and began to scan over the symbols on the screen. "I can give you something for the pain, Sir," she said, voice as cheery as always.
Sunstreaker hated that tone. They all had it, fake cheer and all too polite smiles. He bit back a snarl, continuing his watching.
"I'm not quite finished, but if you would like some company, I could come back after I do. I'm sure it would-" She stopped, frowned a little as if she just now realized that the former soldier was no longer following her.
The golden mech flinched when she turned slightly, staring right at him with that fake smile. He wanted to tell her 'no'. He wasn't playing babysitter to an injured mech, as this was the only time he had out of his room.
After all, he would more than likely be moved back to the institution the next day, where wandering about was not an option.
"Though, I'm sure that my assistant wouldn't mind joining you either. At least, until I check on a few more patients."
Too late.
Sunstreaker groaned, sending the femme a glare like no other.
