True Patriots, Embrace Trump
Unlike HuffPost, Business Insider, Complex, etc - the title of this think piece actually reflects the contents and this is not a click & bait read- hear me out.
As a registered independent and millennial voter I genuinely find Donald Trump's historic and triumphant presidential campaign to be a testament of American patriotism and our democracy. I'm not sure who I'm voting for yet but regardless, I have no intention of fleeing to Canada should Donald get in office. In fact, should that happen this post may be the first step toward my path to The White House. What we're witnessing is historic. The implosion of the GOP, unprecedented voter turnout…in the words of some real leaders- what a time to be alive.
I was born in Harare, Zimbabwe. A country marred by [colonial] racial inequity, economic turmoil, and a faux democracy led by the world's oldest standing dictator. America has been my home since the tender age of 5 and whilst my roots are foreign, I'm a diehard patriot. I believe in the American dream, in hard work and democracy, and all of the ideals immigrants flock here for. I also believe in Snapchat, The Yankees, and Kanye West. All in all, I find our popular culture to be wholly fascinating in it's own right. Like many folks my age and younger, it’s very easy to get caught up in trivial headlines and activities of little intellectual merit. Somewhat ironic since we’re often described as “over educated” and “underemployed” by the preceding generations who raised us.
As a young adult, my political interests are being challenged and put to the forefront not only because of my identity and unique upbringing, but because there is a national push for civic engagement. Whether it's to "Stop Trump" or simply #gotv- there in an undeniable sense of civic duty sweeping the nation. Obama sparked it in 2008 and I was just old enough to acknowledge the shift. Fast forward to 2016, the anger that Trump is tapping into is equally captivating. Just as police brutality is nothing new and the growing frustration is more so a result of technology/social media and the ability to now capture and share content in faster ways that weren't historically possible, the views and opinions held by supporters of Trump are nothing novel. What I love most about the Trump phenomena is the exposure it sheds into a large faction of the country- America's under belly if you will. The sad reality is this population is much larger than most of us have imagined and there is nothing hidden or bashful about them. Trump supporters are your neighbor, your mother, or your boss. Many of them aren't even vocal about it and silently cast their votes. I'm of the philosophy that as free Americans, people are entitled to voice their thoughts openly. Frankly, life is easier that way. To quote a great Chappelle Show skit- "if you have hate in your heart, let it out!" As a hyper perceptive black man I've shaken many hands and smiled at folks that I know harbor prejudices about who I am. For an overwhelming majority of my life I've lived under the false pretense that we now live in a post racial society where racial profiling and bigoted views are things of the past or deep south. Yet, the numbers speak for themselves. Trump has taken Massachusetts. educated states where more moderate Republicans have failed. To be clear -I’m not saying Donald Trump is a racist. Nor is he stupid, destine to lead us to the next World War, etc. This is America and as far as I'm concerned- our "greatness" is a product of our collective mindset. I don't know Mr. Trump, I'm not licensed to make a judgment on his character. He may be brash and uncanny but I have no objective evidence that signal his intentions for this country are malicious. What I do know is he's built a very successful enterprise and has worked hard to do so. Moreover, up until 6 months ago this country loved the guy. A Trump Presidency should not cause anyone distress, the man is capable and charismatic- honestly thats 90% of the job. Not to be overlooked is what Trump represents, his supporters, and the rhetoric they spew. As a megalomaniac, opportunistic businessman who has built a career from successful branding, it'd be foolish to think Trump isn't saying whatever he needs to just so he appeals to a certain audience to gain this sort of momentum. Along that vein, how does he really differ from Hillary Clinton or any other politician of our time? But I digress, my intention is not to steer your vote one way or another but rather redirect the focus from Trump/Hillary/Bernie to America, our democracy and our countryman in plight. Ask yourself not why Donald Trump wants to be president rather, why someone wants Donald Trump to be president? Who is supporting him? What is their story?
This presidential campaign has been void of most of the major issues our nation is facing. Education, Syria, Healthcare, Income inequality, etc. - the policies have been nullified by the personas. Whilst we can blame CNN, FOX and the likes for this, our appetite for this garbage only fuels the flame. As responsible citizens, lets get back to the issues. Ultimately, the presidential election is the least important- politics is local and our Mayors, Superintendents, and Governors are the true movers and shakers of change. That being said, the figure head who represents America is not insignificant. Before casting your vote, reposting/posting more propaganda, take some time to understand the dynamics at play. How?
