LAVENDER FIELDS [II] • xaden riorson
warnings/tags: arguments, breakup, angst, emotional breakdown
wc: 2k
[ᝰ.I] [ᝰ.II] [ᝰ.III]
The cool evening air biting against Xaden's skin did not calm him as he urged Sgaeyl back towards his home. It reminded him of ash and fire, which would burn forever without offering him any comfort.
"You spent half of the day playing around like a hatchling. I was beginning to think you had decided to abandon me for a life of picking wildflowers and drinking tea." Sgaeyl's voice echoed in his mind as they landed in the courtyard.
"I did not play around," he mumbled under his breath as he dismounted, huffing and patting her scales.
"Oh, you absolutely did. I must say, I wouldn't mind flying over again if they calm you down that much." Sgaeyl huffed a cloud of warm air on his face as he stood in front of her, her golden eyes staring him down. He could feel her lingering amusement, knew she wanted to retort more but kept it in.
"The smell of lavender still clings to your body. It suits you, though poorly. It's peaceful and rare, something that you can't quite afford at the moment."
A faraway look shadowed his face as the familiar ache settled in his bones. She was right. Peace wasn't something he could afford while carrying the lives of hundreds of people.
He didn't reply to her as he turned towards the doors of the fortress. His boots crunched the dirt beneath softly as he neared it, already aware of the questions that would be thrown his way. The village felt almost like a fever dream now. For a few hours, he was able to escape the heavy weight of his responsibilities and titles.
The strange girl—bright and cheerful as she was—was able to soothe him with her presence, melting away the suffocating relationship with Violet from the back of his mind. He hadn't even told her his name, and yet she never pressed. She had offered him tea, a place to rest and a sanctuary to respite the raging storm inside him.
"I'm home," he mumbled under his breath as he opened the looming door, his voice inaudible for anyone but him to hear.
The words felt like bitter medicine on his tongue. Riorson House was not his home anymore; it was a battleground where he was residing.
"Cousin, you're back," Bodhi's voice was gentle as it entered Xaden's ears. His cousin's smile was as serene and contagious as it was every day. "Liam was worried, you know? No one knew where you were and you skipped the meeting."
"I… lost track of time," Xaden answered as they fell in step together, ignoring every other person on their way to the upper floor.
"Troubles with her again, huh?" Bodhi questioned but didn't receive any reply. It was the same topic each day. "I know you do not wish to hear it every day, but it's time you focus on yourself, brother. I will not bother you with what everyone has been telling you, but think about it."
Xaden remained quiet. He was well aware everyone knew about his situation, and he had received enough 'tips' to fix things up. Perhaps, it truly was time to end things for good now.
"Check up on him before you go to your room. You know how worried he gets, especially after the incident." Bodhi said as they reached Liam's room, patting his shoulder and walking away in the opposite direction.
Xaden nodded before knocking on the door, waiting for his brother to open it. Liam had nearly died back in Athebyne, the fight leaving him and Deigh gravely injured. Thankfully, they were able to save them both, but the trauma of that experience still haunted his brother every night. Of course, Liam had been improving as days went by, but the slightest of things were enough to spark the dread in him nowadays.
When he didn't hear any voice, he lightly opened the door, only to find the younger man already asleep. The bandages around his chest were wrapped recently, and they shifted with every deep breath he took. Xaden stepped towards the bed and pulled the blanket up, tucking it properly.
He would come back tomorrow and spend his morning with Liam to make sure he wouldn't worry more. For now, it was easier and better to let him sleep, and he had more pressing issues to look after as well.
Closing the doors behind him without any noise, he moved across the halls to reach his room. He was tired already and it hadn't even been long since he set foot here. Releasing a sigh, he pushed open his doors, only to freeze.
The shattered glass from the previous night was cleaned and removed, and the papers that had been scattered were stacked neatly on his desk. But his eyes didn't stay there, instead latching onto Violet's huddled frame sitting on his armchair.
She looked exhausted, dark bags beneath her eyes enhanced by the fire of the hearth. She was staring blankly at the papers but looked up hearing him enter. Her hair was pulled back in a long, messy braid, and he would have done anything to run his fingers through it in the past. He couldn't say the same now.
Their eyes locked for a long, agonising moment where neither said anything. The distance between them was jarring, and he wished he could cross it and just hold her.
"You're late."
Her voice was cold and raspy, devoid of the warmth and love he was so used to. But unlike the nights before, where she hurled poison at him, it seemed as if she had calmed down now.
Xaden slowly closed the heavy door behind him. The illusion of the valley, the village, and the sweet girl with flowers in her hair vanished completely, leaving him standing right back at the beginning. Here he stood now, back in his room with an aching heart and the woman who was no longer his.
"I lost track of time," he replied with the same words he had told his cousin, his voice soft and tired.
Violet let out a breath that sounded more like a short laugh. She shifted in her seat before standing up and walking around the table, and then leaning back against it.
"You'd expect the leader to be more aware of his time and surroundings."
His jaw tightened at that. Of course she would point out his shortcomings before anything else. For a second, a spark of irritation filled him as he tried to ignore her and moved towards his armoury to remove his daggers. Was he not even allowed to spend a few hours without anyone faulting him?
"I went for a long flight," he replied with an even tone, not wanting to agitate her more. "Sgaeyl wished to stretch her wings, and I wished for some air as well."
"You could have told me, at least. Nobody knew where you disappeared off to."
Told you? Xaden thought bitterly. The last time he told her anything, she had snapped at him and pushed him away. She looked at him as if he carried a knife around his back, ready to pounce on her. And she expected he could just go ahead and tell her that being with her was suffocating?
Instead of saying that, he sighed and turned towards her, walking the short distance to stand facing her. He looked at her face properly, trying to find the woman he missed every day. She looked just as broken as him, as if she was tired of all the fighting as well.
"And what would you have said, Violet? Would you have wanted to come with me? Or just spend the entire time looking for more secrets I've been hiding?" He asked softly, his voice a raw, honest whisper.
Violet flinched slightly, but she didn't deny it. Instead, she fired back angrily. "You do not get to ask me that, Xaden! You treat me like I'm some obstacle in your way, like something you hate just so you could protect all your secrets!"
That was all it took for them to go back to their usual arrangement in the past weeks. Xaden stepped forward as he snapped, making her stumble back into the desk. He made sure not to cage her; she was free to leave whenever. But he was angry and hurt enough to pull the ties of his restraint, which kept him silent.
"My secrets? You want to talk about my secrets, Violet? You want to talk about trust?" His chest heaved as he took a ragged breath in. "You stand there and look at me as if I am a monster! You act as if I lied to you every time I said anything! As if I didn't have the lives of innocent people depending on my silence! I never lied! I only kept a few things because I had to! I couldn't risk the people who depend on me to save them!"
"That doesn't give you the right to shut me out—"
"Stop saying that!" Shadows covered every corner as his shout echoed across the stone walls of the room. He slammed his fists against the surface of the desk before pulling away and clutching his hair.
"You act like a hypocrite!" He yelled, his voice cracking like he was about to cry. "Every single time something goes wrong, you turn to me as if I'm the one who planned it all! I have responsibilities resting on my shoulders every damn second of the day! God forbid I make a mistake. God forbid I keep something to myself because the truth would get people killed. I'm a human too! I make mistakes, and I carry the scars of those mistakes every minute of my life!"
You throw these accusations towards me like I didn't think the best of everyone involved. You act as if your lack of trust towards me is completely my fault when you never told me everything either! You demand absolute transparency from me and when I can't give you that, you punish me for it!"
Violet's mouth parted when he finished, her breath hitching as his breakdown washed over her. She wished to say so much, but the teary eyes staring at her made her keep her mouth shut.
"I'm tired, Violet," Xaden whispered, all the rage disappearing from his body and leaving behind a hollow husk.
He stepped back properly, wiping away the one miserable tear which escaped his eye as he straightened his back. He kept his eyes down, not daring to look at her face. If he looked back, he knew he would cave in, and he knew he couldn't afford another chance either. It was now or never.
"You think I always want to fight like this? You think I want to look at the woman who I love and feel like I'm standing at the edge of the world every time she opens her mouth?"
"Xaden…" Her voice broke, a sudden, terrifying realisation hitting her as her fingers trembled, reaching out. "Xaden, don't."
He stepped back completely, the physical distance expanding like an open chasm.
"We're destroying each other." His voice was dead and final as he dared to look up, forcing himself to say the words. "Every day we pretend there's something left to salvage, but we just destroy it more. I can't keep doing this to you, and I can't keep doing this to myself. I won't survive it anymore."
Violet stared at him, her face pale and devoid of any colour. The room around them held its breath as the words finally left his mouth.
"It's over, Violet," Xaden said quietly.
"We're done."

DANCE WITH ME • xaden riorson
summary: xaden despised attending the fancy dinners and ball nights. but as the heir to the tyrrendor throne and his father's responsible son, he couldn't really miss these events. but when he met the woman who hated the banquets perhaps even more than him, he couldn't help but fancy her.
warnings/tags: prince!xaden x princess!reader, protective xaden, period typical misogyny and creepy men

Xaden adjusted the gold-embroidered collar of his doublet with a sharp jerk, his jaw clenched impossibly tight. The looming doors of the ballroom stood just in front of him, seemingly turning into the gates of Malek's own lair as he neared them.
He despised these nights.
He despised the suffocating scent of expensive perfumes, the whispers and fake smiles of lords and ladies. They never saw him as a man, but only as the heir to his father's throne, eager to win his favour. But most of all, he despised that he couldn’t just turn on his heel and walk away. Instead, he had to entertain the ladies and other high-ranking women present. He was twenty now, and his father expected him to find a wife soon.
His father wasn't just a king; he was a leader and a warrior who fought for his people's freedom. Xaden respected and loved him far too much to shame him in front of all these nobles. But gods, these people tested the limits of his patience every time. It never helped that the ladies always only ever tried to flatter him with fake niceties. He always wondered if it would hurt them to ever be themselves more.
"Try to at least look alive, son. That frown on your face would scare off everyone within a mile." His father's hand landed on his shoulder with a soft laugh. "We have special guests on our premises today. I want them to think we are prosperous and cooperative, not plotting their doom."
"This is what my face usually looks like, Father. If they get scared of it, that is not my fault," Xaden replied smoothly as the doors opened and they stepped into the hall together. "And I am always plotting."
He smiled as his father laughed loudly, before moving towards the generals and leaving him to his own stuff.
Left alone, he let his eyes roam around the room and sweep over the crowd. A grimace made its way onto his mouth as he saw a familiar face, making her way towards him. He pivoted on his heels instantly, walking fast and mingling with a few nobles. Anything to save himself from possibly the most horrible company of the night.
The lords around him greeted him with fake cheers and pleasantries, asking him for his opinions on current political happenings. He nodded and smiled along with them, acting like the perfect prince he was.
As soon as the coast was clear, he took a run for it, dismissing the men with a rehearsed smile as he made his way to the corners. Somewhere where he would be hidden enough to not be bothered by anyone. The dessert table placed nearby was another reason, of course. If he had to suffer the whole night, he would rather do it with chocolate cakes on his side.
And then, he saw you.
You stood near the archway which opened to one of the balconies looking over at the gardens. You wore a fitted gown of midnight black, shimmering under the candlelights of the hall. But unlike other ladies, you held your back straight, shoulders braced, and chin raised. Your face screamed boredom as you stared at the people fluttering about, swirling the rich wine in your flute.
Xaden felt a strange pull tug at his chest, telling him to get closer to you. He didn't know who you were, but he knew from your expression that you hated being here. Your disdain matched his perfectly, and he'd go as far as to say you hated it even more than him. Without any further wait, his legs carried him across the floor towards you, his tall frame easily parting the crowd. But before he could actually reach you, someone else took the opportunity.
Lord Hale.
One of the noblemen from the neighbouring province with a reputation for leaving anyone utterly uncomfortable. Xaden's eyes narrowed as he watched how close the pompous lord was standing beside you, invading your space with a nasty grin. His fingers reached for your arm, grabbing it with familiarity which made you scowl.
"Come, Princess," Hale purred, his voice loud enough for Xaden to hear over the music. "With such a lovely face and body, you shouldn't spend the night alone. Show me a smile. A woman's duty is always to comply and perform well. Perhaps we could figure some arrangement out and spend our night together."
Xaden's blood went cold hearing those words, then boiling hot. A primal urge to protect you, and cut the fingers and tongue off that asshole filled his heart. You were a princess. Royalty. And Hale was treating you as if you were some piece of furniture he could own.
He saw the way your fingers twitched, ready to strike the man with a punishing slap. With large steps, he crossed the distance easily and gripped the arm holding yours in a tight grip. He felt your breath hitch as he placed himself just in front of you, his body restricting your view.
"Lord Hale," Xaden's voice was cold and smooth, cutting through the air with a sharp precision.
"P-Prince Xaden," Hale stammered out, stumbling back as Xaden's grip tightened on his arm. "I—the princess was just—"
"You were overstepping, my lord. Touching someone who clearly holds no interest or desire for your presence around her. Or of your opinions for that matter."
"My apologies, Your Highness, I meant no disrespect—"
"Out," Xaden interrupted, voice still calm but now laced with a dark intensity. His hand loosened its grip over the arm, leaving bruises the lord would find later on. "I won't repeat myself, my lord. Trust me, if it weren't for my father's presence, I would have kicked you out myself."
Hale scrambled away with his head bowed deep, not daring to look back. Silence stretched between the two royals as Xaden turned to face the woman behind him.
"I could have handled it myself, you know?" Your voice had an edge of defiance you didn't bother hiding.
A corner of Xaden's mouth tugged up in a small smirk as his hand closed around yours to raise it towards his lips.
"I have no doubt you could, Princess. It is simply my duty as your host to make sure my guests do not suffer from any harassment."
Your eyebrow raised at his action, allowing your hand to rest in his offered elbow as you both walked towards the balcony.
"A host who seems to hate this event as much as his guests do apparently."
"Hate is a strong word," Xaden mumbled as you both reached the balustrade, leaning his back against it as he turned his body a little to face you. "I prefer saying I detest the… idiotic crowd we royals have to suffer interacting with."
You laughed gently at that, pushing his shoulder lightly in retaliation as he smiled down at you.
"Fair enough," you said, giving your name and introducing yourself. "I must say, you wear the responsibilities of your crown quite well already, my Prince."
"As do you, my Princess. It is not every day you come across someone willing to attack a noble with such lethality in their eyes."
"Was it really that obvious?" You ask with a smile, your eyes twinkling in mischief as his face neared yours.
"If someone who knows what they're looking at," Xaden replied, his gaze dropping momentarily to your lips before snapping back to your eyes. "You looked ready to start a rebellion right here by the dessert table. Frankly, I was impressed."
"A rebellion, hm?" You hummed as the air between you sparked with something. "Do you know what they whisper about you in my homeland?"
"Whatever they say, I'm sure you wouldn't base your opinion of me off them. I simply prefer to do things my own way, if they're interesting enough."
"Am I interesting enough for you then, Prince Xaden? Or am I just another courtly distraction?"
Xaden felt a hot rush of desire pool low in his stomach. You were sharp and daring, fearless of his presence. Unlike other ladies, you didn't shy away from him, didn't act like you had a mask to uphold for his validation. You knew you were his equal, or perhaps even his better.
It was intoxicating.
"You are the only interesting thing that has happened in this room all evening," he answered honestly, one hand slowly easing down to your waist.
As the music shifted to another, a slow waltz echoing outside the halls, he glanced back once, knowing someone or the other would ask him for a dance.
"The preening ritual begins," he grimaced, keenly aware of the prying eyes around them, of both men and women waiting for a chance to strike.
"Remind me again why our parents think it is a good idea to force us to spend our time with these leeches?"
"It is our duty to appeal to the masses," Xaden deadpanned. Then he extended his hand toward you, palm upward, his fingers calloused and contrasting his perfect face. "Dance with me."
You blinked, looking down at his hand, then back up to his intense eyes staring at you with anticipation. "You just said you hate this."
"I hate the pageantry," Xaden corrected, his fingers twitching slightly as they enclosed around your hand gently. "Though, I can always appreciate good company, and I would be lying if I said you're anything short of that. Come, let's give them something actually worth whispering about."
A slow, wicked smile spread across your lips as you let him lead you into the middle of the crowd. His hand settled firmly against the small of your back, pulling you flush against his chest as you fell into step with the music. You moved gracefully, body matching his rhythm effortlessly as if it were a routine you both shared every day.
"You know," you murmured, your face just inches from his, "for all they say about you, you're not entirely insufferable. I rather enjoy your company a lot myself."
"Careful, Princess," Xaden murmured back, his gaze locked onto yours with a fierce, burning intensity, pulling you just closer than propriety allowed. "Keep talking to me like that, and I might just kidnap you and take you all for myself. Might have to show you how much we could enjoy each other's company tonight."
Your breath hitched, but you didn't pull away. Instead, you leaned in, lips nearly brushing his, and your voice a soft promise against the loud music.
"Try it, Riorson. I think I might not even fight you and just follow you willingly."

The glass cups smashed against the ground as soon as Violet closed the door behind her. Xaden gripped his hair as his shoulders shook from keeping himself steady. Not even the familiarity of his chambers could remove the tension in the air. Another day of arguing with Violet, another day of their relationship drifting apart more than it already was. He wondered when everything had gone wrong. Was it the day she realised he had kept secrets from her? Or was it the day he fell for her? Was it a mistake? Maybe they were never meant to be.
Every day was a repeat of the last one now, and it's been going on for weeks. They would argue in the meetings and their—no, his room. Every day he would find himself pulling away more and more as his Violet did the same. The walls which took so long to be broken by her were slowly rebuilding themselves. He didn't want to say it out loud, didn't want to admit it, but he knew it better than anyone. They were no longer the Xaden and Violet who fell in love with each other back in college.
If anyone were to ask him if he was the one at fault, he would readily agree. After all, he decided to keep secrets from Violet all this time. A relationship was built on trust and understanding, which both of them lost when the truth came out. He didn't resent her for not trusting him. He didn't resent her whenever she hurled those words at him, which broke him apart piece by piece. But he couldn't bring himself to regret his actions.
He had responsibilities. Too many to count and too many to reveal to others. Lives were dependent on him; Tyrrendor was dependent on him. If given a chance again, he would still keep his secrets with himself alone. Because no matter how much he loved Violet, this was not about him. It never was.
He loved her now, and he would love her in the future, but he would never have her. Whatever relationship they had never truly existed. After all, in the end it wasn't just he who kept things. Violet Sorrengail never trusted him with her whole being, just like how he didn't trust her with his.
The sun was yet to rise when he stepped out into the courtyard, while the castle was full of chatter and the staff rushed about preparing for the morning. These were the moment where he felt like he could let go of his burdens a little. It reminded him of days long forgotten, when things were fine. When he used to run the length of the hallways with Garrick and Bodhi behind him. When his home actually felt like a home full of laughter and joy. But those days were long gone, and the present required him to be alert and ready at all times.
He moved across the courtyard, closer towards where he knew Sgaeyl was already waiting for him. The events of last night were still fresh, and he hoped a long flight would rid him of the painful thoughts.
Sgaeyl's head lifted when he neared her. Her eyes stared him down without any usual quip, already well aware of what was going on through his head. She simply nudged him on his chest before letting him climb her leg. Xaded smiled as he settled into his seat, pulling the goggles down and securing them. He truly couldn't have asked for another dragon to be bonded with.
She lifted off the ground with strong beats of her wings, the familiar motion and jerks settling his thoughts down as he gripped the scales in front of him. The morning air was cold across his face as they circled the mountains before finally soaring high. The harsh winds ruffled his hair, which had been growing longer slowly. He would have to cut it soon before it became too long.
"It wasn't your fault."
Her usual sharp tone was soft when it entered his mind. He didn't bother replying, instead gripping the scales tighter as he urged her to go faster. Sgaeyl huffed but listened to him, pushing her wings as they levelled out in the vast sky. A flock of birds flew past them as the sun peeked from behind the mountains, lighting up the sky into a beautiful canvas of golds and pinks. A part of him ached when he remembered the nights he and Violet spent together flying on their dragons. But those days seemed so far now, completely out of his reach.
He shook the memories from his mind, guiding Sgaeyl to fly towards the valleys in the distance, going as far as he could from the Riorson House. There were more things to focus on than reminiscing over the past. The Venin were becoming stronger, attacking outposts and villages in large numbers, and he needed all his attention on the incoming threats and not on his doomed love life.
As more mountains and cliffs came in sight, Xaden was surprised to see something colourful in the distance. He urged Sgaeyl to go lower a little to observe it better, only to find large fields of flowers, which were surrounded by green grass as they lay hidden between two soaring mountains. He wasn't aware so many flowers could grow in the harsh conditions of his homeland. Aretia had become a war zone, and even with all the reconstruction efforts, he never would have imagined seeing a view like this.
Sgaeyl, noticing his fascination, flew down, gently lowering herself into the largest field. Lavenders surrounded him as he jumped down, pulling his goggles to hang at his neck as he stepped over the flowers carefully. Something which Sgaeyl didn't care to do as she lay herself down onto the flowers, crushing them. Xaden protested at that, surprising himself. He was not one to care about little things like that, but looking at life grow in his home made something in his heart ache. Sgaeyl chuffed a hot breath at him, completely unbothered as she closed her eyes, preparing for her sleep. He ignored the slight ache in his chest and eyed the flowing river, noticing a dirt path leading somewhere down the valley. Something told him to follow it, to see what exactly this place he had stumbled upon was.
"I shouldn't be too long," he whispered, turning back to his dragon, checking on the talons and scales. There was no need truly, but it had become a habit for him.
Fixing his straps and the few daggers he had bought, he started the journey towards wherever the dirt path led. His eyes strayed away at every coloured petal which contrasted sharply against the black of his boots. The dirt beneath him was soft, and the smell of the lavender surrounding him calmed him instantly. The path looked well worn, so he assumed a settlement nearby. How everyone missed this area on the map left him puzzled.
The sound of the flowing water was his only companion as he descended into the valley, the flower fields slowly giving way to a forest. His eyes stared at the tall trees as he continued, slowly coming to a stop by a cliff from where the water rushed down. He stood at the edge, peering down only for his breath to hitch.
There in the heart of the valley, safeguarded by nature itself, was a village. Smoke rose from the chimneys of the small cottages spread around the area, and he could see a few individuals working in the early morning.
"Are you going to just stare?"
A soft but firm voice sounded as he turned around hastily, hand gripping one of the daggers. High in the canopy of the trees, he noticed a woman sitting on a branch, her back leaning against the bark. He cursed under his breath at how careless he had been, but removed his hand from the hilt of his dagger, reading no harmful intentions from her. The woman smiled brightly at that, twisting her legs to jump down onto the lower branches and then dropping in front of him. His eyes hardened as she stepped forward, staring at his dagger with wide eyes.
"That is a really pretty dagger," she said in awe, her fingers gently touching the runes around the handle of the dagger strapped at his waist.
"I've never seen you around here. Where are you from?" She asked as she took a step back and looked up at him.
Xaden took a look over her instead of answering. She wore a white linen dress with purple embroidery on the sleeves. Her hair was laced with the same flowers from the fields he had walked through, and the morning sun shone brightly on it.
She tilted her head at him, lips slowly forming a pout as he continued staring at her.
"Are you going to just ignore me?"
"You shouldn't talk to strangers, you know."
Xaden found himself replying almost instantly. His voice a sharp jab but not unkind. She perked up when the words left his mouth, clapping her hands once in glee, muttering how the stranger actually knew words.
"Well, that's why I'm asking, am I not? Who are you? Where are you from?" She repeated the question, completely unbothered by the fact that she was talking to a man with daggers strapped on him.
"Just a traveller," he lied smoothly as he ignored the first question, not wanting to reveal his identity to some random village girl he didn't know.
Her lips twitched at that, amused and aware of his actions, but she didn't pry. Humming, she gestured towards the village below.
"Would you like to join? We rarely get travellers here and I'm sure the villagers would love to meet a new face."
He should say no and head back to Sgaeyl. He should leave as soon as possible because clearly this village was isolated from everything. The girl seemed so at ease, as if there wasn't a war or death waiting for them just beyond the mountains guarding this valley. But looking at her sweet and welcoming smile, the same part of him which urged him here made him want to say yes. It made him want to experience the moment of utter peace away from all his responsibilities.
"Are you sure it would be fine for me to come?"
Her smile widened from ear to ear in a full grin. Without a word, she grabbed his hand, pulling him toward the left side of the cliff. A natural staircase led downward towards the outskirts of the village. She pulled him down, gushing about being careful as the splashing water made it slippery and telling him of all the times she had slipped as a child. His wrist remained enclosed by her fingers, and he thought of how Violet used to grab his hands before pulling himself back together. Violet wasn't here.
As they finally reached the bridge leading to the village, he saw kids running and playing around, laughing without any worry in the world. He found himself loosening up at that, his shoulders dropping in ease. They were another reminder of what exactly he was fighting to protect. People were happy here and living their lives peacefully, something which he aimed to achieve for all of his province.
Villagers and the children all greeted her, who was still dragging him. A few questioning stares lingered on his mark, but none dared to interrupt the bright woman in front of him. She led him to each corner and turn, introducing him to every person they found. The name 'traveller' seemed to echo around the village when they finally finished the impromptu trip.
They were currently sitting in her house, situated at the other end of the village and quite large in comparison to other cottages. She had a proper garden in the backyard, full of colourful flowers and medicinal plants. Apparently her grandmother was the healer of the village, and as her granddaughter, it was her responsibility to make sure all the herbs needed for treatments were available.
Xaden looked at the growing lavenders as he sat in one of the chairs in her garden. She had told him her name when they entered the house, and never asked him for his own. As he listened to the clanking pots and utensils in the kitchen, he thought back to the day he had spent. It would be a lie if he said he didn't enjoy the normalcy, that the weight of his responsibilities never bothered him while they roamed about.
"You're thinking very loudly; troubles back at home?" Her voice had lacked the edge he was so used to.
"Something like that," he replied, expecting her to probe, to try and squeeze some piece of information out of him like everyone else. All he received was an understanding look in her eyes as she placed the tray down in front of him with a smile.
"Well, if you're passing through sometime again, you're always welcome to rest. Perhaps next time I can take you to one of my favourite spots. It tends to fix most heavy things for me, at least for a little while."
She never asked for his name, never questioned the mark on his arm she clearly recognised. Instead, all she offered was kindness, far different from the reality he lived in and was about to return to.
As he walked back to the flowering fields, with her waving him goodbye, he turned back just once. And for the first time in weeks, Xaden felt the rebuilt walls around his heart crack—just like they did back then.
Maybe he would come back again soon.

The voices were so, so loud.
When Sgaeyl told him that she was bonded to his grandfather, and he would manifest another signet, he didn't think it would be an inntinnsic ability. Of course, he knew it would be something strong considering he was a direct descendant of her previous rider and how strong the she-dragon truly was. But not something which could get him executed if the leadership found out.
Thankfully, when his second signet manifested, he was alone in his room. The sudden onslaught of the loud voices in his head was nearly enough to make him scream out loud. To think he hadn't even properly learnt to control his shadows yet and here comes another headache, this time quite a literal one. He had been able to keep it down for a while, trying to put up his shields harder and ground himself to prevent the thoughts from entering his head.
Sgaeyl had told him that he couldn't tell anyone about it, that not only would he risk his life, but also everything else too. Which he readily agreed to; he had no plans to die this early and leave all the people he had sworn to protect behind or jeopardise the mission. However, he couldn't really shout at everyone to stop thinking whenever he entered a room. And no matter how much he tried to keep everyone out, he still wasn't strong enough to actually shield properly.
The sudden waves of hundreds of thoughts attacking him always left him shaken. It was becoming harder day by day to keep himself stable and act normal in front of the professors and the other cadets; especially his marked ones, especially you. How badly he just wanted everyone to shut up and stay away from him. The countless nights he spent in his room, locked away with tears streaming down his face and hands clutched around his head, haunted him. The fact that he had to hide it all from you was another ache in his chest.
You, who looked at him with pure adoration in your eyes.
You, who had kissed the scars on his back and made sure to be always there for him no matter what.
You, who worshipped him since the moment you both crossed the parapet and saw each other after three long years of separation.
So, yes, it pained him tremendously to push you away. It pained him to look at your expression of hurt every time he denied you entry into his room. It made him go crazier than he thought he already was. But because it was you, in the end he decided to come clean. To let you hold him as he clutched your riding leathers and forced his tears and pained gasps down.
Sgaeyl was angry without doubt, but she accepted it as well. For she was a part of Xaden as he was hers, and the amount of love he had for you was beyond comprehension. To think her little human was infatuated with another little human, as if they were hatchlings, was far too amusing for her. And watching her new rider feel safe and cherished in the arms of his mate was enough to dismiss her wrath.
You rushed across the rotunda, taking long steps as you pushed everyone who was in your way aside. Garrick had informed you just a few minutes ago how Xaden was acting weird and fidgeting at every little sound. You knew the signs well enough to take a run for it as soon as your best friend finished speaking.
It had been a few weeks since he manifested his second signet, and while he was much better at suppressing, it was still not enough. Every few days, he would get one of those episodes where every person's thoughts within a few meters of Xaden's range would simultaneously appear in his head. They weren't just murmurs like usual, something he was still getting used to. Instead, it was a crashing wave of every cadet's emotions and desires; the horrid feeling of constant death and panic.
You've spent enough days with your arms wrapped around him as he moaned and thrashed in pain, begging for someone to help him. Your boyfriend may be one of the strongest people you've ever met, but not even he could handle the amount of torture he was going through. Your heart broke every time he tried muffling his screams in your palm or your leathers. Not only because you felt his pain with every sob escaping him, but also because you were scared. Scared that someone would find it all out and reveal it to them. Scared because your other half was not only suffering but also was at risk of being executed any day. It was a complete miracle that the leadership and the professors hadn't figured out anything wrong with him.
You opened the door without knocking, for you knew Xaden's wards allowed you entry to his rooms at all times, just like yours did for him. He was sitting on the ground, his back leaning on his bed as he clutched his hair tightly. His chest heaved with every harsh breath he took, panicked gasps leaving his mouth at irregular intervals.
"Get out of my head," Xaden choked out, his voice raspy.
The shadows surged in this room as he repeated the words again and again, scattering and breaking things in his room. Rushing over to him, you hastily sat in front of him, pulling his fingers away from bruising his forehead.
"Shh… I'm here, Xaden, I'm here," you whispered slowly, taking him into your arms as his own wrapped around you.
He gripped you hard, fingers digging in through the leather you wore. Your hands rubbed his back gently, whispering soothing words into his ears, trying to distract him.
"Make it stop… please… I can't… It's—It's too much, too loud. Please… just make it stop…"
Tears gathered in your eyes as you felt his drop onto your skin. His arms shook as he tried to keep his mind from internally exploding. Shadows rippled at the corners of the walls in agitation, his first signet slipping free from all the pain and confusion. You didn't know what to do to help him. The only way which worked was to take him to the river, away from everyone in the quadrant. But you couldn't do it while he was experiencing an episode; it would be too risky, and neither of you could take that chance.
"Make him focus on you instead of everything. All these thoughts are tethered to his own brain, and he has to break those links and focus on a single one."
A sudden voice called out in your head, sharp but just as regal.
Sgaeyl
"Xaden, look at me," you said, making him tighten it further as he shook his head. "No, Xaden! Listen to me, please, my love."
“I can’t! The voices—I can't! It's too loud…"
"Xaden!" Your voice snapped loudly. "You want to shut the world out? Make it stop? Fine. We'll do that, but you have to focus on me first. Hear only me, nobody else."
You pressed your forehead against his, urging him to look at you as he took a deep breath in. His eyes were unfocused and wild, darting from one corner to another as a single tear continued flowing down. Gripping his cheeks in your palms, you forced him to look straight at you. The shadows lashed out harshly, but you ignored them; you knew they would never hurt you intentionally.
"You can do it," you mumbled against his lips, barely touching them. "Focus on just my thoughts. Can you do that for me? It'll help, I promise you."
You did not know if it would help, but anything to make him relax. Xaden stared at you before closing his eyes, inhaling deeply before he nodded.
"I can’t do it. It's too hard to separate them... everything is blurring together."
"Find my pulse," you whispered as you grabbed his hand to place it against your racing heart. "It's only us here, nobody else."
Slowly, his nose scrunched with effort as sweat ran down his face. You whispered praises along his face as it twisted into pained concentration. His one hand clutched your waist as if it were the only thing grounding him.
"You're doing so well, my love, just focus," you murmured, threading your fingers through his damp hair, tracing soothing circles against his scalp. The shadows slowly settled down around you, building a small cocoon of sorts to keep you both locked away from the outside world.
Suddenly, you felt a tingling sensation at the base of your skull, as if someone was prickling you there. Your eyes widened with realisation, your brain quickly switching to imagine the days which you both spent running and laughing together back in his home. A small smile broke out on Xaden's pretty lips as his fingers on your chest properly entangled with yours. You pulled them towards your mouth, gently kissing his knuckles with your own smile.
His breathing slowly evened out as he opened his eyes to look at you. The panic and shock were gone, replaced by exhaustion and a slight tremor in his body.
"Aretia…" his voice came out in a haze.
"Will be ours once again. She's going to stand just as beautiful as she was; this I promise you."
Xaden pulled you closer, face hiding in your collarbones as you felt his shoulders drop slightly.
"Did I hurt you?" he whispered, his thumb brushing the line of your jaw.
“You could never,” you smiled softly, pressing a kiss to his temple as he leaned his whole weight on you.
"I can still hear the other thoughts, but they're much more gentle now. How did you…?"
"Sgaeyl told me."
"You did?" He asked in his mind, finally feeling the thread of his dragon and their connection, stable and warm.
"You weren't listening to me, so of course I had to resort to other ways. Your mate was already there, so might as well."
"She's not my—"
"Do not lie to yourself or me, boy. I know you better than you know yourself. We both know just what exactly she means to you."
He didn't reply, instead pulling away from you and dropping both his hands down to your waist. Sgaeyl was right, after all. You were his whole world, and he was sure if it weren't for you, he would have been dead already. Without any hesitation, he shifted forward for his lips to rest against yours.
The kiss was slow and soft, removing all the tension from his shoulders and clearing his mind of all voices. Without any urgency, his hands moved from your waist to grab your hips gently, pulling you to sit on his lap as his fingers rubbed circles on the leather covering you.
It felt as if you were in heaven. The whole room faded away to only leave him and you alone. Gods, he was so, so good at this. As if reading your mind, which he was doing, he smirked against your lips, biting them teasingly. Before you could even force out how he was being unfair, his tongue brushed against your parted lips and forced its way in. Your fingers clenched his shirt, nails digging into his skin as you gasped and he pulled you closer onto his lap. His mouth slowly traced its path down your neck, leaving a trail of kisses in its wake. Once he reached the base of your neck, he bit there hard, sharp enough to leave a mark for everyone to see.
"Is this alright?" He mumbled against your skin. His fingers, which were rubbing slow circles along your hip bones, tightened once before relaxing and guiding your hips to move above him languidly.
'Gods, yes, it's perfect, Xaden. You're perfect…'
You thought you had answered him, but apparently not. His pupils dilated as he heard your sweet voice echo in his head. Oh, he was absolutely going to abuse his signet once he gained full control over it.
"I love you."
'I love you, too.'

A dragon without its rider is a tragedy. A rider without their dragon is dead.
Everyone in the Riders Quadrant knew those words by heart. It was the first thing mentioned in the Codex, after all. It was known that if the bond between a dragon and its rider were strong enough, then if the rider died, the dragon would follow them to their death. But no rider ever came out alive after their dragon's death. None remained breathing to see if they could bond with another dragon or not. Not a single record of such a case.
Except now.
Here you were, sitting on the cot while staring at the dried flowers beside you. You had spent the last few days in the infirmary, with a burning hole in your chest no healer or mender could fix.
How long has it been since you were brought here? The last thing you actually remembered was falling onto the battlefield with your dragon. Wounded and bleeding, he had made sure to cover you with his wings to protect you during the fall. You were not supposed to engage with anyone; it was just a surveillance round with some officers near the border as training. You and your fellow third-year riders were taking a break when you were ambushed. The fight didn't last for long, as the senior officers arrived fast. But not fast enough to save the one who mattered.
Nèamh was gone. Your dragon was gone.
You prayed to and begged every god in existence to hear the voice of your dragon in your head. That maybe it was simply a joke, and you would get another sharp quip from him. You were met with silence every time.
Professor Kaori called your pair the greatest in each flying session. You were the best rider in the whole quadrant. Then what happened for it to end like that? What happened that made you fall off your seat and for Nèamh to fly after you and crash instead of leaving you be? Yet, the biggest question was the one everyone asked, but no one had an answer to.
Why didn't you die with him?
The question kept spinning in your head as you took a final look at the dead flowers. Winifred had told you that you could return to the quadrant a few minutes ago. That your body was healed enough to leave, and you should take it easy for a few days to not agitate yourself.
But leave? Where to even? Would they even accept you without a dragon? It was not like you could redo the first year to try bonding again.
The questions were left unspoken in the empty room. The ache in your chest was getting worse with every breath you took. Your eyes remained fixed on the same spot on the ground as you tugged at the collar of your uniform, which felt too big and wrong on your body. Was it just you or was it getting a little hard to breathe?
You're wrong.
You froze when you heard that familiar voice whispering at the back of your mind again. You tried controlling your breathing, hands fumbling with the sheets as the voice grew closer. You've heard the same words repeating over and over again in the last few days, and they were enough for you to memorise them at your core.
A mistake. You shouldn't be here. Just let go. Stop fighting it. Stop breathing.
Your hands clenched into fists as you tried to focus on something else. Malek knew well enough how badly you wanted to do that. There was no purpose left for you anymore. It would be so easy to just let everything consume you whole, to let the ache devour you and disappear from all the pitying stares and whispered words.
"Stop doing that."
Your eyes snapped open to meet his gold-flecked ones.
Xaden Riorson stood leaning on the door frame, his arms crossed over his leathers with a frown on his face. Shadows rippled at his feet as he took in your form for the first time since you were brought up to the infirmary.
"Doing what, Riorson?" You rasped, throat dry and voice broken. You hadn't spoken to anyone in the last few days properly.
Not like you wished to speak anyway. You had no energy to entertain your wingleader at the current moment. Knowing him, whatever was about to leave his mouth next would just annoy you like always. And you really didn't have it in you to go through that along with the already growing feeling of dread inside you.
You weren't really close—or well, you supposed you were? Considering the amount of time you've spent in the classes and on training mats together, you couldn't really say that. And you knew Nèamh and Sgaeyl were friends as well, both being blue dragons with similar personalities. So, no, it was not like Xaden was a stranger to you. Not to forget you were his section leader, as well. The countless meetings where you argued over some small thing or the other, only to laugh them off later.
Not anymore.
The same traitorous voice called out, reminding you of your position for the nth time. You knew it well enough. You couldn't really take part in the wing formations anymore—a rider without a dragon is not really a rider. He was probably here to tell you that you have been kicked out of the quadrant. That the leadership didn't know what to do with someone who survived the impossible, so they would rather get rid of them.
You've seen the way the healers avert their gazes, how your friends stopped visiting once you were out of danger. Nobody knew what to do with you. For them, you were nothing more than a problem. Someone to be discarded quietly before the situation got out of hand. You were an anomaly. And anomalies were not supposed to be treated as if normal.
"That. Stop doing that. Blaming yourself."
He pushed off the door frame and walked slowly towards the chair placed in front of your cot. His eyes roamed over your body, stopping at the large gash peeking at your collarbones just above your shirt.
"Wouldn't you like that? After all, you've been a pain in my ass for the last few years." Scoffing, you turned towards the window, ignoring his presence. You both knew that was far from the truth.
You didn't want to admit it, but him being there definitely kept the voice at bay. Though you could still hear the whispers, your hands weren't clenched tight enough to draw blood.
"Are you here to look at the freak, wingleader? Did the leadership decide how exactly they're going to execute me?" Your words were spoken softly, barely loud enough to be heard by him.
"I came to see the only rider in the history of Navarre to survive losing her dragon," Xaden added quietly. "That doesn't make you a freak."
The way he said your name made goosebumps rise along your arms. Was he always this soft and open when addressing you?
"It makes you an anomaly," he said after a small pause.
"An anomaly I'm sure they're eager to get rid of. I hope they would do it soon enough." You laughed at that, the mocking sound easing your mind.
Xaden jolted at that, his head snapping up to stare you down. The air in the room dropped as his jaw ticked. His shadows rippled with restrained control as he dragged himself closer.
"Say that again."
The meaning behind his words was clear—daring you to speak that sentence again.
You turned to look back at him as tears slowly welled in your eyes. The exhaustion in your bones was catching up again. You knew your mind would start spiralling soon as well, and the crushing weight was too much to bear. You felt like you couldn't carry it anymore for another day.
"I said, I hope they would kill me soon," you repeated, voice dropping to a shaking whisper as the first tear rolled down your face.
"Every breath I take, every second which passes with me being still alive feels like a crime. As if I'm not just betraying everything we knew but life itself. It all feels so wrong… like I'm stealing something not meant for me. Why am I even here? He's gone and I should have been gone with him." You probably should have kept your mouth shut, but the words kept on pouring out, like someone had broken the dam.
"Do you know what it feels like, Xaden? To live with that constant feeling of emptiness inside you? To know that you were supposed to be dead but you're not? To not hear or feel your bond—your dragon—anymore? That my body might not realise it yet but my soul knows that a part of it is missing and nothing is ever going to bring it back?" Your hands started shaking again as you felt your lungs struggling to breathe.
"Do they expect me to go back to my squad tomorrow?" you continued as the tears finally spilt over your face. "Do they want me to pick up a blade, stand in the gym, and pretend that I'm a rider when I'm clearly not? You know it. I know it. They all know it. I'm not a rider anymore; just an empty husk of one. And every night when I close my eyes, I see him falling. I feel him closing his wings around me as he decides to protect me rather than himself.
"For what it's worth, it'll be much better to just get rid of me and erase this moment from our records"
You brought a trembling hand up to your neck, gripping the collar tightly as you tugged the buttons loose.
"I can't do it… I can't wake up to this every day for the rest of my life and act like things would be better. It would be so much easier to just... to just let go."
Xaden didn't say anything at first. He stood there, watching you pour your heart out and cry. He watched as your tears fell and didn't offer any comforting lies to hold your sanity together. The room seemed to stretch long, elongating the distance between the two of you as if you stood at opposite ends of a corridor.
Then, he stood up.
He crossed the short distance between you two and grabbed your chin. His fingers gently tilted your face up to meet his as his other hand landed on your cheek, wiping the tears with his thumb.
"Listen to me," his voice was low, laced with that edge of commanding tone he used during meetings. "Every rider in here has lost family, friends, or even themselves. This war college makes sure to beat us all to our ends."
"But—"
"No. Let me finish." His thumb brushed just beneath your eye as he bent down on his knees, face in front of yours. He switched his grip from your chin to place both hands on your cheeks, pulling you closer as your foreheads touched.
"You survived not because of some mistake, but because of how strong you are. You're here because your dragon wanted you to be here. You're here because you're the most stubborn person I've ever had the honour of knowing in my life. So don't throw it away like that. Show them all that you will overcome this and prove them wrong."
"But it hurts too much," you whimpered, and he dropped one of his arms to wrap it around you, pulling you into his chest.
"I am empty, Xaden, and I do not know what to fill this space with." The words were a mumble against his chest, and your tears soaked his shirt. His head leaned against your hair, inhaling deeply as he slowly rocked you both.
"Let your anger, sorrow and grief fill that space then. Let your actions speak louder than anything the leadership wants. Don't let the silence win."
"But what if the silence is too loud?"
A soft caress of his lips on your forehead answered you first before his words.
"Then let me fill that silence instead."
DANGEROUS GAME • xaden riorson
summary: dreading the upcoming reunification day and his graduation, xaden has never felt more agitated and restless. but she's there to care for him as always.
warnings/tags: she/her pronouns, established relationship, fluff
wc: 1.6k
Reunification Day was the one day Xaden perhaps loathed the most. The approaching event left him aching and distraught no matter how much he tried to keep it in. The whole continent celebrating the death of his father and the defeat of the Rebellion. Professor Devera had announced during Battle Brief that King Tauri and all the commanding officers would be celebrating Reunification Day in the college this year.
As if he wanted to face the people who signed off on his father's death and act all nice in front of them. Three years since he entered this death college and watched his people suffer. Three years of taking commands from the same leadership who wanted him and all the other rebellion children dead. If it were up to him, he would rather kill them all with his bare hands—do something, anything, to protect the people he had sworn his life to.
But he couldn't do that. Instead, he was to leave in two weeks, unable to protect those who would be joining soon after. That was the one thought which kept circling his mind as graduation approached. He would have to leave things to Bodhi, Imogen and Liam. They'll have to keep everyone together as he and the older marked ones graduate. It'll be alright. He trusted his friends more than he trusted anyone else—aside from her, of course.
"Sit."
Her voice was gentle as it broke him out of his thoughts. She pushed his shoulders down to make him sit on the armchair, and rushed to the bathroom. Since graduation was near and they both would most likely be posted at different places, Xaden wanted to spend all the time they could together. Her being his section leader always helped. Meals and training sessions were shared no matter what, and so were their nights. He had quite literally forced her to either stay in his room or he would stay in hers. Not like anyone was going to catch them; he was possessive and protective, making sure everyone knew who exactly she belonged to.
Xaden leaned back against the chair, a small, soft smile on his face as he heard her fidgeting with something inside and grumbling about it being so messy. Her presence was a welcome relief from the emotional pain he was experiencing. He truly was the luckiest man alive, for being able to call her his and his alone. Their relationship wasn't always this easy and smooth. Being in the same squad and her being the daughter of a colonel who was on the opposing side led to a lot of arguments arising between them in their first year. But it was all in the past, and all that mattered was that they were together.
Soon she came out with her arms full, a beaming smile on her face as she stopped in front of him, the morning light creating a warm and hazy glow around her. She placed the things on the table beside the chair, but before he could take a look, she pointedly shook a finger at him. Gathering the hem of her nightgown, she stepped over his legs and settled down on his lap. His breath hitched as her hips pressed against his with a familiar weight. His hands gripped them as if it were natural, pulling her as close as their bodies allowed. She kissed the tip of his nose once, letting her lips linger as his eyes fluttered closed.
Warmth filled his heart as his arms tightened around her. Gods, he was smitten. He hoped they would be stationed nearby, or at least near enough for him to visit her whenever Sgaeyl would visit Tairn. The things he would do to always keep her beside him. All he wanted was to bring her with him to the Riorson House and marry her then and there. She already knew his secrets and supported him with everything, so maybe kidnapping her won't really be a bad idea.
His eyes opened to lock onto her as soft fingers gripped his chin gently and tilted his face to the side. Her cheek pressed closer to his own, and a dissatisfied huff left her mouth as his stubble rubbed against her skin. It had grown somewhat long and thick over the last few days. Too much work for him to do considering all the meetings he had to attend, leaving him tired and moody.
"This won't do at all," she whispered as she leaned back to pick up whatever she had brought. His eyes followed the action to see his gel and blade he used for shaving, and a small bowl full of water with two soft towels dipped into it. Lips parting with surprise, he arched an eyebrow at her.
She laughed at his expression before gathering a good bit of gel and rubbing it between her hands. Lathering it up good, she turned and applied it on his cheek, fingers slowly rubbing up and down. He sighed as the feeling of her fingers gently massaging his face allowed all of the tension to leave his body. His eyes softened as she dipped the blade into the bowl before looking back at him.
"Stay still. If you move," she murmured, with a playful twirl of the blade as she flicked his nose with her gel-lathered finger, "it won't be my fault you lose your neck or face."
"I'll be still as a stone then," Xaden replied as he smirked at her, his voice deep and tired, still laced with sleep.
She huffed at him before dragging the table near after cleaning her fingers. Leaning closer, her left arm rested on his chest for support as her knees adjusted to a comfortable position. She gripped his jaw and tilted it sideways, eyebrows furrowed in concentration as she slowly laid the cold flat of the blade against his upper cheek.
A satisfying scrape followed her first stroke, leaving behind his smooth brown skin. Wiping the blade on the wet towel, she repeated the action. The sound of small strokes of the blade and their breathing filled the air surrounding them as she worked down his cheek and stopped before starting with his neck.
When she shifted slightly on his lap to adjust her position, her breasts pressed against his chest. Xaden tilted his head back, exposing his neck to her completely. His hands tightened around her hips as she moved back and forth, rubbing warm circles through her nightgown. There was a thrill to this—the sharp blade resting against his neck. A single swipe from her and he'd be dead the next moment. The woman on his lap—his woman—held the power to end his life then and there if she wished to, and he wouldn't even be mad if she decided to do it. Though he knew in his heart and soul that she would rather do anything than harm him.
"Don't swallow or move, please," she mumbled, her voice low.
"Hard not to, love, with you sitting like this on me." His reply came with a small shift of his hips.
She paused at the feeling of him pressing against her, warmth pooling low in both their bodies. She hit his chest in retaliation, retrieving the blade as Xaden smiled at her, rolling his hips once more before deciding to let her finish her work. He knew she could feel his heartbeat loudly beneath her palm, knew she was aware of the impact she had on him. If this was what followed for not shaving for a few days, he wouldn't mind growing a beard and letting her clean it off every other morning.
"Don't you dare," she mumbled as she efficiently cleaned his neck, knowing him well enough to understand what was going through his mind. "I'm not doing this again."
As soon as the words left her mouth, she leaned back. Cleaning the blade and picking up the second towel, she wiped off the leftover foam from his face and neck. Her warm hands met his smooth skin as she nodded at her splendid work, fingers pressing onto his jaw.
"There," she said with a smile. "Smooth as silk. Now you look clean and pretty as always."
"Did I not look pretty before?" He mused with a half annoyed look, but they both knew he was far from annoyed.
"No," she replied with a cheeky smile as she moved to get off his lap.
Instead, Xaden's hands moved faster, shifting from her hips to her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. He dipped his head into the crook of her neck, lips pressing against the spot he knew made her squirm from all their nightly sessions.
"A dangerous game you play, love," he murmured against her skin, as he trailed his lips up towards her face. "Holding a blade to my throat like that, hm? What if you had slipped and cut me?"
She sighed as he bit just below her jaw, mouth sucking on the skin to leave a mark she would surely struggle to cover later.
"It is only dangerous," she smiled, pulling his hair back with her fingers to make him face her, their breaths mingling together, "if you plan on giving me a reason to slip."
She didn't give him a chance to respond as she surged forward, their lips meeting with fervour and need. Xaden held her as he stood up, forgetting all about his worries, and walked towards his bed. As he laid her gently on the mattress, his body followed hers, his hands pulling at the sleeves of her nightgown to reveal her skin.
"You are such a tease," he mumbled against her sternum, hands kneading her hips.
"You love it though, don't you?"
He would show her exactly how much he loved it and her.
