I was talking to a family friend today and we had a very interesting conversation about the protection of animals.
Where I live the council is apparently considering a cull on geese because of the mess that they make. Aside from the ridiculousness of the idea, I found it fascinating that my friend (non-vegan) uttered the exact sentiments that I was thinking.
‘Where do humans get the idea that we get to rule over everything on this planet?’
‘It’s cruel and unnecessary.’
I looked at her and I realised that deep down everyone is a vegan. When we hear about or witness the barbaric treatment of a living creature we protest because we know that it is wrong.
Most people do not register an animal when they see their meat. A chicken breast does not resemble a chicken in any way; to most people a chicken breast is an item of food, not the flesh of a once living creature.
Let’s say that someone does register that their chicken breast is part of a once living chicken, I’ve heard many ‘oh well’ responses from people regarding this but I wonder, would you be saying ‘oh well’ if you saw what happened to chickens and other animals every single day? I don’t think you would.
The food and advertising industries have done an excellent job of disassociating the foods that people consume from their origins. If you’re not a vegan, the next time you say ‘well chickens and cows are food animals’ I implore you to consider what you’re saying and what that even means. In China dogs are food animals, and yet the Western world gets outraged every time it hears about the Yulin festival because you think that dogs are pets.
There are no pets, there are no food animals, there are no zoo animals or farm animals, there are only living creatures. Please, look beyond what you have been taught about animals and their categories. Visit a farm and you will see that the animals there have different personalities, just like your pets. I am convinced that humanity has the potential to love every single animal on this planet, the way that people risk life and limb for their pets is proof of this.
All animals are deserving of the compassion that society has reserved for the lucky few.
