I find it disappointing that there are many people out there who dismiss Neo-Latin vocabulary as “made-up Latinized versions of modern words.” I wonder whether the person who contributed this critique to Latin Student Problems also is dismissive of the use of “made-up Latinized versions of modern words” in the books Quomodo Invidiosulus Nomine Grinchus Christi Natalem Abrogaverit, Winnie Ille Pu, Harrius Potter et Philosophi Lapis, and Hobbitus Ille.

But I will say that the Latinity in the Latin version of Facebook does have some problems.  The most basic grammatical points are not horrible, but whoever came up with the Latin translation there 1) seems not to have bothered to do much research on the use of already-created Neo-Latin words for modern concepts and consequently resorted to inventing them as he or she went along (in other words, this is a case of “reinventing the wheel”), and 2) seems to have had little or no training in Latin word formation (unfortunately, this is something you really do not get much in Latin class nowadays, and I had to go out of my way to learn it on my own).  I used to use the Latin version of Facebook, and very often, I had no idea what a word was supposed to signify because it was so badly formed.  This nonsense eventually annoyed me so much that I went back to the English version.

The bacterium that causes plague, Yersinia pestis, has been linked with at least two of the most devastating pandemics in recorded history.

The leader is a bit misleading: the article is actually talking about how they’re now fairly certain that yersina pestis caused the Justinian plague, rather then an explanation of the mechanics. The big deal was that - like several earlier particularly bad plagues - it shattered trade and agriculture, disrupting tax revenues which messed up Justinian I’s ability to fund new projects and to wage war… which in turn, gave the Goths around the Byzantine Empire a chance to strike back against his attempt to retake Italy, and forced him to stop before trying for anything else as he’d overextended his forces.

Apartments (Insula) in Rome

In Rome and Ostia, most commoners could not afford to live in private villas, and instead dwelled in apartment buildings, or Insula. These buildings were usually two or three stories tall, but could be as high as six stories, with the size and quality of the apartments diminishing as one moved up in floors. Shops and businesses often occupied the ground floors. Insula were built and owned by wealthy men, who acted as landlords and put the spaces out for rent, but were also charged with maintaining them (something that, like the owners of tenements in the 19th century, they usually failed to do). Interestingly enough, despite the huge disparity between these landlords and their tenants, Rome was not generally segregated into strictly rich and poor neighborhoods, and insula often stood alongside homes of the wealthy. 

Life in these buildings wasn’t super fun - insulae had no running water, toilets cellars, or ovens, which meant that dwellers had to use public fountains, public toilets, and had to buy ready-made food from bakeries or street food sellers. The living quarters were dark, cramped, and unsanitary, and had a high risk of catching fire and even collapsing due to shoddy construction from money-pinching landlords or contractors. Because the insula lacked even the most basic necessities, most people were forced to spend the bulk of their social time outside - on the street, in shops and public baths, or in places of entertainment like the coliseum. For those interested, this is how Crassus made a lot of his money - by finding insulae that were ablaze, and arriving with a horde of slaves. He’d then buy the property from the owner on the cheap, and put the flames out… and if they didn’t sell, it burnt anyway. Whoops.
