''What Saturn in Aries is about is survival. It is a Saturn that disposes of what cannot be carried because it senses that it must remain light on its feet and mobile. It’s an adaptable Saturn. It seeks to cram the family inheritance, all of the troubles and hopes and memories, into a backpack... Saturn in Aries can be a Saturn that is cruel to itself. It is a survivalist and survivalists don’t luxuriate. However, to survive is to hold space for failure. To survive means that you give yourself enough time to live. Saturn in Aries—Saturn in fall—is a Saturn that knows how to survive and, joyfully, is also learning that it knows how to live.''
- Alice Sparkly Kat, Saturn in Fall
An ode to ARIES
As spring begins so does Aries season. Who else can find the will to break through the frost and bask in the warmth and breathe anew, besides Aries. They are reborn. It takes courage, determination and strength to be a Aries. Like a baby, there is a innocence surrounding the thought of babies but their journey to start life comes with great strength and will power and the ability to act on sheer creative impulse. Breaking out to find light, to find life. Flowers start to bloom, the sun shines longer. Seemingly dead trees start to grow green again. Representing the beginning and all the energy needed to begin that comes from Aries.

Slippery slope of a sloppy sloth. Petroleum jelly on your lips, letting out a different voice as situation requires. Where the lighted mouth rather chokes, than speaks. Banshee wails. A body decomposing in hibernation, sometimes; other times, crawling and wailing; sometimes even getting up to move around in a particular direction; falling again, with guilt and shame, feeling undeserving of support. Becoming everyone and everything you touch: the powers of a friend, the cool of metal under your fingers, the nonhuman sensating of the grass beneath your cheeks. Becoming the grass, overgrown with grass, becoming the decomposing fuel for it to grow on top of you, around you, you become a little mound. Until someone disconnects your skin from the touch of grass. Loosing yourself in other people then, your biomass is nourishment for them, you decompose fully and recompose with little less matter with every conversation, every touch. The day you realized that with you and any other person - between you now sprang up a clear plastic wrap that you have never known possible before -- it was the happiest day in a long long time. Weight of your body digging a hole in the ground, your weight dropping you away from others around you. You too will one day be fossil fuel for creatures living in communities millions of years from now; their petroleum jelly to slather on dry skin, their occlusive moisturizer.
Johanna Hedva: I hear a lot around how to be a witch [that] it’s about ‘intention-setting.’ Like oh, that’s all it is, you set your intentions, to cast a spell is really just setting your intentions and lighting a candle or something.
Ariana Reines: Intention is a capitalist idea…
Johanna Hedva: Well and the idea to me that intention matters at all. I think a more interesting way to talk about intention is to talk about meaning-making. If you wake up and are like, you know what means a lot to me today, is getting this ‘xyz’ thing. And then of course you’ve transformed your set of values for that thing, and I can understand that as being a kind of casting of a spell. I find that practices of magic or astrology or witchcraft, for me it’s about surrender to a kind of devotion that more often than not is going to annihilate you, and that’s the point. It’s about radically removing things like ‘intention’ or ‘success’ or ‘getting what you want’. I find that to be a neoliberal euphemism…
Ariana Reines: I’m with you. I’m in a mode of service, and surrender, and slavery, frankly. That’s my blood impulse. But it’s with consent! It is a little sick, perhaps. But I serve. But I also do believe in reciprocity. I’ve learned reciprocity is real. For me, studies of astrology were studies in reciprocity. I needed to invoke a reciprocity with the powers that organize life. It was a matter of necessity. It was a matter of survival.
my 1 pet peeve is. when people give that cafe astrology or star co list of their placements as a ”chart”. that is literally not a chart that is missing like 80% of the information needed.
and i thinkn it’s also harmful in essence bc it portrays astrology as a more categorical thing, like the results of a personality test.
whereas when the zodiac is perceived through its circular nature, with all its contents relating &interacting with each other, the true dynamic of the horoscope is shown and easier to understand.. a circle contains everything within itself, as does the zodiac — as do we :)
also not at all blaming ppl who use them bc that is what we r offered and i think ofc in general it is beautiful astro becomes more mainstream but like. it is symptomatic of capitalism that the most popular options for learning/using astro are these ones that simplify it in a manner that fits our current information-receiving environment but are taking using it in such a weird & unnatural (more categorizing) yet more easily commercialized direction .
10th house nn, 8th house nn, nn in capricorn, capricorn nn, scorpio nn, nn square or opposite chiron: the final girl trope. run away. theres nothing to return to. theres nothing to heal. its not your business. let the ghosts haunt your childhood home. let the demons eat your ancestors raw. it's not about you. they're doomed because they stayed. you run away. run away.
''There’s one thing that I want you to enter 2023 with: I want you to devote yourself to the wondrousness, the mystery, the banality, and the absolute brutality of life. If you love life, I want you to fucking love it. I want you to dig your nails in and refuse to give it up. I want you to eat it.
...I don’t know about you but I put some parts of myself to sleep these last three years. Numbness is a way to keep living. But no more. It’s 2023 and it’s time to love life. We are in a new era and in an ongoing pandemic under an economic system that prioritizes productivity over life. I say, life is the only thing that is allowed to kill you in the end. Life is the hardest thing to love.''
--- Alice Sparkly Kat, 2023 Yearly Horoscopes
''CAPRICORN:
Obsession is a curious thing. You don’t know what it is until you’re very deep in it. Self consciousness does not kill it. You only become self conscious of obsession once you’re past the point of caring. You start to see all of the things that you are obsessed with in the world. It changes the world around you and it also changes you. It doesn’t come when you call and it rarely leaves you just because you will it to.
Obsession is inherently wasteful and very, very creative. Usually, calling someone obsessive is another way of calling them difficult or socially freakish. There is no cure for obsession since it doesn’t always seek what makes you pursue.
I want you to enjoy obsession in 2023. Write 3000 jokes this year. Make a quilt with very fine yarn that takes hours and hours. Ask a single question 700 different ways. Be vigorous and demanding.
The worst part of obsession is that it blows apart all of your precious routines and steals from you the things that you thought you needed to maintain yourself. This is also the best thing about it. Obsession is for the strange. You are very strange. Give yourself the permission that you need to become obsessed with something that makes you feel alive.
Questions to ask yourself 2023:
What were you obsessed with as a child?
What would need to give in your life to make more room for obsession?
What is the pace of your obsession?''

''There are a lot of strategies that Mars in Libra might use to hide a conflict. If a conflict feels far too huge to bring to the surface, Mars in Libra might focus on the smaller issues and pick relentlessly at those situations without even realizing why those things seem so irritating. Mars in Libra might habitually make itself appear to be much weaker than it actually is because it has learned that the only way to survive a fight is to feign defeat. Mars in Libra might present itself to be much pickier than they actually are because they would like to have some sort of control over things when they inevitably go wrong. Other times, it can even appear as though Mars in Libra is attracted to conflict in some way because it will go where the drama is, smiling and either hoping or dreading to be put in the position of peacekeeper.
So, no—Mars in Libra is not usually a stand-on-the-table-and-scream-until-your-heart-gives-out kind of Mars. Usually. It can be but it doesn’t identify with the person they are when they become like this. It doesn’t particularly like itself when it gets like this. Mars in Libra is not one to lose control but it is one to fear losing control. Mars feels disliked when in Libra. A person with Mars in Libra may fear that being angry will mean that they lose the ability to be themselves. ''
-- Alice Sparkly Kat, Mars in Libra Power
''Sometimes we hope that Mars in Libra has more to do with peace and harmony than destruction or aggression. This is not the case. Mars in Libra is still Mars.
What Mars does when it is in Libra, when it is in a sign where its characteristics are not welcome and have never been welcome, is it hides. It thwarts. It obfuscates.
You have to keep in mind that a debilitated planet is often a point of pain. What is it like to become a person whose anger is not welcome? A person whose rage exists invisible and truncated? Imagine such a person and then consider the Mars in Libra individual. ''
-- Alice Sparkly Kat, Mars in Libra Power
''It isn’t easy for a Mars in Libra to let you know that something hurts. It is much easier for a Mars in Aries to do this because they will howl with pain upon receiving a wound. Mars in Libra is used to becoming an impenetrable surface and relying on the secret places that they have carved out to place all of their ugly feelings.
This is where we discover the power of Mars in Libra. Their power is the power of a Mars that only has half of its strength. It is well used to operating with its strength cut in half and it has discovered that there is plenty of life that keeps going on when one does not maintain some facile show of power.
What makes Mars in Libra so powerful is that it will only engage in conflict as a choice and never as an impulse. It will always understand that it can step away. No one can hold a Mars in Libra hostage using its anger.
...Mars in Libra is experienced in conflict. They are not naive and know that things go wrong. This is because they know that space around conflict gives everyone involved the chance to grow up while the conflict is happening. They teach maturity to you by expecting it from you. They have grown up a great deal right alongside many conflicts which are both unavoidable and unresolvable. ''

Planets in Astrology: Venus
I’m going to dive into the meaning of the five visible planets and two luminaries (the Sun and the Moon), also known as the seven “classical” or “traditional” planets. I will share various significations for the planets from texts written between the 2nd century AD and the 20th century AD, and conclude with some of my own thoughts about interpreting that planet in astrology.
Friday is the day of Venus, so today I’m writing about the planet of love!

A Beginner’s Guide to the Houses in Astrology
The houses represent topics or areas of life. They bring astrology down to earth, symbolizing concrete events, circumstances, and people you encounter in your life. This post is a beginner’s introduction to understanding the houses. I will begin with descriptions of the underlying concepts used to interpret the houses, which you can work with as a foundation to build your own meanings. Following that I will briefly describe my own understanding of each house. This post includes several links to free resources and a brief reading list for further learning.
