FYI, you can't actually tell what rising someone is based on what they look like. Controversial statement (it shouldn't be), but as soon as you start listing the characteristics, you split people into who's in closer proximity to a beauty standard based in eugenics (and white supremacy therein) and who isn't.
Applies to both western astro and vedic. People need to remember that astrology is not exempt from containing fascistic ideals (and fascism is not exclusive to western countries). For ex: When it comes to people that are hyper conventionally attractive, they're often associated with being youthful, dreamy, serene, ethereal, peaceful, sensitive, romantic, charming, and are generally 'special' and unique etc. Anyone well researched in the grotesque history of race science or knows some literature about disability would look at people calling themselves a 'Libra' or 'Taurus' Rising bc they have palatable features---with absolute disdain.
Astrology is rife with anti-queerness, racism, ableism, classism, and all forms of oppression we should fight to dismantle. I have to catch myself accidentally using some of these easy go-tos sometimes because typology is what makes astrology easy to consume but not to understand the complexities of.
When assessing someone's rising, it's much more reliable to gain and understanding about them and then start trying to figure out what planets belong in which houses.
On the Astrology of the Stonewall Riots;
This chart here is for 1:20am, June 28, 1969 in Manhattan, when the cops began their raid on the Stonewall Inn, specifically the gay bar and club on the ground floor, seeking to criminalize trans women and drag queens for "masquerading" in the clothes of the "wrong" gender. This raid precipitated 6 straight days of rioting in the streets of Greenwich Village, and the formation of some of both the Gay Liberation Front, which was ineffectual but symbolic in explicitly naming queer people for the first time in the name of an activist group, and the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries, which provided housing to trans people, as well as the institution of Queer Pride in America, and the legalization of open public queerness, and the unanimous vote to remove "homosexuality" from the DSM and cease recommendations towards electroshock torture just 4 years later.
Chart Delineation:
Starting first with our 1-7 axis, we have the ascendant at 20°46' of an empty Aries 1 answering to a retrograde Mars at 2°23' of Sagittarius, and Uranus just barely at 0°03' of Libra in the 7HS. Answering to these houses, we have Scorpio 8, housing a retrograde Neptune at 26°20', and Taurus 2 housing Saturn at 06°31', and Venus domiciled at 20°58'.
This describes an atmosphere firstly evocative of the US Declaration Sibly chart, oddly enough, with Uranus just under the horizon in an air sign, although here being pretty clearly descriptive of the sudden outbreak of violence from the perspective both of the Stonewall's patrons at the beginning of the night, and then also of the cops later on when the queer populous of Greenwich Village began retaliating. In the Sibly Chart, that Uranus in Gemini 7 describes both foreign conflicts, but also the queer, feminine, poor, and especially Black and Indigenous people who domestically experience an intolerable situation of governance and who are forced into a tectonic position of having resistance become a necessity of dignified existence.
Having Uranus and Saturn answering to Venus in Taurus implies that the forces of history and most importantly of authority are here succumbing to the power of the conciliatory interpersonal, to that of Venus, which is to say that the 7HS topics of open enemies and contracts and Libran situations of cyclical/periodic social engagement and interaction will be answering to the 2HS of Taurus, and basically the material circumstances, and with Saturn there, the material law of things - shortly after these riots, people began displaying queerness much more openly in Greenwich Village, and starting in the next year, Pride parades and festivals began springing up all over the country. Material consequences to material conditions - queer people in this country decided to revolt against an intolerable condition and they demanded our rights for us, as open enemies of the state, presenting their love and their identities as an act of open resistance and as a show of force.
Having our Mars Rx in Sagittarius, governing the 1 and Neptune Rx in the 8, this describes an overdue and reparative demonstration of violence which in its performance carries a disillusionment, and which itself becomes an iconic symbol of resistance that can be proliferated widely, given that Neptune is of images and illusions, and that Sagittarius is of diffuse will. This reflects the dispersed nationwide and international honoring of Stonewall, and open political presence of queerness as an organized force. Having Neptune in the 8HS in Scorpio, this also reflects the eventual recuperation and commercialization of pride festivals, and even the disentangling of abolitionist and liberationist sentiment in favor of simple representation politics and rainbow capitalism.
Also in Sagittarius 9, we see Luna at 13°16' opposed Mercury Domiciled at 14°42' in Gemini 3, and we have our Mars and Luna answering to Jupiter at 27°57' in Antithesis copresent Pluto at 22°34' and the SN at 24°37' in Virgo. This describes how visible, effectual, and well-recorded this event so happened to be, amid other acts of resistance that had been continuously ongoing and which would perhaps have occurred subsequently regardless of Stonewall - Luna is the record keeper of the stars, she is the principle of reflection and therefore of memory, it is said that when the moon makes no aspects, nothing of consequence may happen because she governs also the material realm, she brings the conceptual into the material. In Sagittarius 9, this denotes an atmosphere of evangelism, but of course here being of a philosophical and ethical quality rather than that of a religion. It describes a wide scale proliferation of this embodied metaphor, of this propaganda of the deed which proclaims it is no longer possible to forcibly repress queerness within society, not without open retaliation. Mercury in Gemini 3 here will be describing the mechanism by which initial visibility occurred, being via newspapers published shortly afterwards, and by rumors that perhaps certain activist groups like the Black Panthers may have been involved, although the historical record at this time implies that the riots were spontaneous - and this Mercury also reflects the wide multiplicity of responses in various different cities across the nation and across the world, and being copresent that Uranus in the Sibly chart, reflects a visible concordance with those stated aims towards universal freedom, and the hypocrisy of the State which would deny them.
That Jupiter-Nodal-Plutonic manifold across Virgo 6-12 will be describing how queer liberation is a historically necessary and unavoidable demand to simply have the liberty to live and work in our day to day lives unencumbered by systemic oppression, and by a metaphysics which would criminalize and pathologize queerness. It reflects also the stakes of rebellion, being those 12HS topics of imprisonment, institutionalization, and exile - one protestor at a riot following a subsequent raid, Diego Viñales, was arrested after being impaled on a fence, trying to flee out a window, as he was an immigrant who feared deportation - and Jupiter being in antithesis in the 6th reflects the sudden beneficence to come from a routine manifestation of disempowerment and disenfranchise.
Across the 11-5, we have two empty houses - respectively Aquarius answering to Saturn in Taurus, and Leo answering to Solis at 06°20' in Cancer 4. This will be largely descriptive of the events themselves, how the collective power of protest was borne of a collective need to live with dignity and in security, without constant threat of open State oppression and criminalization of queerness, especially feminine queerness. Venus sees it as sinful to inhibit beauty, especially feminine beauty, and part of that disinhibition is the liberation of queerness and transfemininity. Leo 5 describes clearly how the target of oppression was a bar and club, and how the modus of resistance employed kick lines and sung chants, openly expressing queerness and queer culture as a weapon in and of itself. Answering to Cancer 4, it also demonstrates how the resistance was inspired by mutualistic care for each other and community self-defense.
Also governed by Saturn is our empty Capricorn 10 with the degree of the Midheaven at 11°10'. This will be reflective of how Stonewall marked a new status quo and a new social order in which open queerness still wasn't exactly accepted or certainly not respected, but it was more tolerated, and it was seen as impossible to quell fully, which was a significant step along the process of demanding legal recognition of our rights, and of openly organizing so as to do such demanding in the first place. Opposite our Solis in Cancer, this denotes how such acts of open rebellion were taken so as to defend our locations of privacy, of security, and of mutual recognition from which we can devise collective theory and philosophy and activism.
Synods and Transits
In the years to come, Stonewall continued to be reinforced as a significant historical symbol. The first Saturn opposition in 1984 corresponded to the reelection of Ronald Reagan, who had by that point already been ignoring the HIV/AIDS epidemic for three years, and he wouldn't address the issue until September 1985, when that Saturn in Scorpio transit was in the final term of the sign. This act of open genocide against queer people fully cemented the arc of queer liberation in America, being a clear and evident deliberate act which could not help but be encoded in our collective history as soon as we were permitted to in any capacity begin to recover from the loss. It robbed us of a whole generation, and in so doing, it guaranteed the radicalism of queerness as a bloc going forward.
In 1999, during the per-sign Saturn return of the riots, the Stonewall Inn was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, and was named as a National Historic Landmark that same transit in the following year. This transit was copresent Jupiter in Taurus, in superior trine to his position at the time of the riots.
Upon the opening Neptune Square, with Saturn in Cancer on June 26, 2003, the US Supreme Court illegalized the anti-sodomy laws which still stood unchallenged across right-wing states in the Lawrence v. Texas decision.
Upon a Jupiter-Neptune conjunction in Aquarius, part of that same square, President Obama officially proclaimed June to be Queer Pride Month. This time also saw a Venus return conjoined Mars in Taurus on the anniversary of Stonewall and a Saturn-Uranus opposition across Virgo-Pisces.
On June 26 2015, during the second Saturn opposition of the Stonewall chart, the US Supreme Court guaranteed the rights to marriage equality and adoption equality for queer people (in theory) with the Obergefell v. Hodges decision. This happened also under both a Neptune and Pluto trine, and the first Uranus opposition relative to the Stonewall chart.
So, first of all--this is fucking brilliant and masterful, but I'm sure you already know that~
Btw, ya'll, this can be classified as Mundane Astrology and no other astrologer on this website will be as skilled or gifted in this particular niche in astrology as Emerald. I'd go as far as including the general internet in this.
And second of all, with the recent increase of intensity in the targeting of trans people world wide, I'm wondering how current transits are affecting the chart. Especially with Pluto in Aqua, Neptune in Aries, and Uranus in Gemini on the horizon.
Last cycle, the nodes pinged the Gem/Sag axis on its 3/9 and I feel as if that represented a sort of 'aggravation' of the existing status quo because trans politics, although it's always been considered to be contentious, suddenly became an even bigger boogey-creature in recent years, esp w/ trans healthcare being pushed to the forefront as an issue to be made more accessible. Kinda looking at Luna rn and wondering if the SN in Sag on top of it opposing Mercury may have enraged people wanting to protect 'children' bc of Luna's associations or at least it's association w/ the past a la 'memory.' It's drudging up pearl clutching Satanic Panic esque fears.
"They're corrupting our children," etc.
And current cycle, I'm looking at its progression to the 2/8 axis via Taurus/Scorpio, which nowadays has been looking more and more like the return to 'simplistic and conservative values' via Taurus whilst the paranoia of Scorpio rears its head from the depths. We're also dealing w/ much heavier planets this time. We have Neptune, which deals with collective culture and the fairytales and illusions around it, the stories we tell ourselves and others to maintain/fabricate/facilitate cultural illusions and myths, for better or worse and the SN hit it recently, so I'm curious as to what happened when the SN in Scorpio as at 26 degrees hitting this chart's Neptune. And it's rapidly approaching Venus via the NN, which I feel may be positive, hopefully. And it has to ding Taurus in Saturn..which feels like something legislative may come into play here.
We also have the fact that the next cycle's nodes will be on its 1/7 and the one following that will be the official nodal return of it on the Pisces/Virgo axis via its 6/12. It's all fucking fascinating.
