The Hearts count as love, family, and friends.
Today, let's look at the parallels between the Tarot's cups suit and the playing cards' suit of hearts!
You can probably already very easily guess what the hearts in playing cards/Cartomancy represent: emotions and things that deal with, and affect or are affected by our emotions: relationships, family and friends, celebration, and love itself. This little shape (although far from anatomically correct) might get doodled between the names of two lovers, to dot cutesy i's, to convey affection. . . .but cups? How can we connect cups to emotions?
The way I learned that cups represent emotions is that when we care for others, we fill up their cup. We can't care for others when our own cup is empty, and when your cup overfloweth, you can give generously to others. Cups can be filled with water, and water is traditionally tied to emotion, to the ebb and flow of feelings and of relationships in our lives. Cups are raised at celebrations, and when someone drinks to cope (maladaptively) with hard times and difficult emotions we might say they are "too much in their cups."Â
There's a rhyme I learned when first learning Cartomancy (I'll teach it to you someday đ) and the line dealing with this suit was quoted at the very beginning of this post: "The hearts count as love, family, and friends" But beyond these meanings, hearts and cups have more meanings in both sets of cards as well!
In Tarot, cups also deal with intuition and spirituality (and thus used to represent the clergy as a class). In Cartomancy, hearts also represent artistry and creativity. The element tied to both hearts and cups is (as briefly mentioned earlier) water! Both hearts and cups are associated with the summer, but when looking at the timing of cards, the Tarot cards from 2-10 can be broken into the decans of the water signs: cancer, scorpio, and pisces in that order, whereas in Cartomancy although they are also tied to water, in terms of timing they are tied only to the summer season. (More on timing in future posts!)
In both decks, hearts and cups are overall the "feeling suit"
