Many Hats

"What do you do?" is probably the most commonly asked question among newly acquainted adults. I guess I'm supposed to have an answer like, "I'm a lawyer," or a teacher or a trash collector. Generally, I answer the question this way, "Right now I'm at home with my kids, who I also homeschool." But really, that's only part of the story. I am a writer, a professor of English, and an amateur fiber artist. I am Hoopnotica Certified Instructor and small business owner. I am training to be a Ballerobica instructor. I keep a small flock of poultry and a small garden, and I would love to grow in self-sufficiency. Anyone who keeps house, raises children, or has a career wears many hats. Most of the time we find labels that cover them all, like Stay-at-home-mom, Entrepreneur, or Dad. I haven't found mine yet. I suspect there are more people like me out there, with careers that sometimes get put on hold, jobs that aren't meant to last forever but fit for now, who redefine themselves now and then, without necessarily abandoning previous definitions. Maybe soon we'll have to stop asking, "What do you do?" and start asking, "What are your passions right now?"
