Perth
Top 5 Good Stuff and Top 5 Shit Bits of my latest travel adventure - this time, my first trip to beautiful PERTH!
Top 5 Brilliant things about Perth:
1. Margaret River – okay, so not technically Perth, but this place is awesome and is claimed by Perth locals as their own. Do yourself a favour and go. Go and book accommodation early (see the Shit Bits below). Go and visit Gralyn Estate*. Go and drink all the things. Just go. I love it there.
2. Northbridge – it’s a suburb that is a combo of the awesome food that normally inhabits china town districts, mixed with the cool bohemian vintage and pop up shops of West End and a touch of sweet public art with a Library and Theatre. Bliss.
3. Free loop – there’s a few free buses running on handy loops around Perth inner suburbs. It’s awesome and easy to figure out.
4. AFL crowd – we went to a Fremantle Dockers home game (which they won) and it is so nice to see a full AFL stadium outside of Melbourne. Well done Perth.
5. Wine – it’s good and I drank and bought a lot of it. Something in the soil in the neighbouring lands just makes damn good stuff. Yum.
Top 5 Terrible/Yuck things about Perth:
1. Smokers - Seriously, it’s a rampant habit in Perth. It’s like it’s the 80s and no-one’s gotten the memo. The Government needs to invest in a Quit campaign over there. Stat. I do realise I’m spoilt by the Brisbane/Queensland laws which treat smokers like the socially gross and stinky air ruiners that they are by making them go to the far reaches of the universe to entertain their filthy habit. Thank you Brisbane.
2. Airport – alarmingly there are two sets of terminals about 15 minutes drive from one another. The names of the terminals are not referenced with the more commonly known and helpful - International or Domestic labels. No, no, Perth uses just simple numbers - T1, T2, T3, T4. Fun does not ensue from this system. Sort it out Perth.
3. Expensy – I don’t know if it’s because it’s a capital city so far from the others but stuff is just generally more expensive in Perth. Margaret River is also going to set you back, so take cash when you go on your brewery/winery/cheese and chocolate factory jaunt.
4. Camping - if you leave your Easter trip planning to Margaret River to the last minute, you will find yourself shit out of luck in finding a bed. Any bed. Anywhere. You will have to sleep in the tray of a ute on a campsite in the middle of nowhere with no electricity or running water. I friggin hate camping. Lessons learned.
5. Far - it’s really far to get to Perth. It takes ages. It’s quicker to get to Fiji from Brisbane. (please note, that might just be the whitest and whiniest thing I’ve written on these blogs)
*Ann is your girl when it comes to a tasting at Gralyn Estate but be prepared to hand over serious cash for this liquid gold. It’s delicious.
Freemantle for the win! (at Subiaco Oval)
Melbourne
Top 5 Good Stuff and Top 5 Shit Bits of my latest Melbourne trip. Hey, I’m early for my flight, so that’s what happens. (You seemed to like the Sydney one, so I’m doing it again)
Top 5 Brilliant things about Melbourne:
1. Autumn – I left Brisbane and it was 36 degrees with 96% humidity. In other word, the outside was the same as the inside of a god damn Bikram Yoga class. In late MARCH – supposedly Autumn. I arrived to a land of ‘cool in the shade, pleasantly warm in the sun’ natural and normal Autumn behavior. Gotta love a city that has different seasons and allows you to wear the cardigan your sister insists you pack whenever travelling interstate.
2. Coffee – it’s cheap. Even the fancy coffee that takes 3 smug hipsters to drip filter, cold press and ethically sustain it’s way into a take away keep cup is cheap.
3. Trams – they are fun and easy to figure out. Unless you’re driving, then they seem to instigate a set of weird turning rules I will never fathom. I best not ever drive in Melbs.
4. Fashion – my work uniform in the world of arts administration is pretty much black on black. With some black leather shoes and black bag thrown in to complete the depressing, invisible seeking ensemble. Melbourne appreciates this and embraces it with its weather and general nod to long sleeves and pants. Bliss.
5. Wine – Melbourne knows how to put on a good house wine. I didn’t have a bad one in 4 days (and I tried like 8, oops). Brisbane seems to use the term ‘house wine’ as a way to charge money for terrible gift bottles they receive from office Christmas parties and disgruntled wine reps.
Top 5 Terrible/Yuck things about Melbourne:
1. People from Melbourne* - Please note, you are not the only city in the world. You aren’t even a state! Relax, we’ll like you just fine for other reasons (see above), stop wearing your Melbourne-ness like armor against the rest of us.
2. Airport – it’s a million miles from the city. And I’m sure we’ve all been tempted by the ‘other’ airport with the cheaper airfares when booking flights online but is actually NOT in Melbourne at all but says it’s Melbourne. Rude.
3. Daylight savings – as per my Sydney trip, this is weird and I don’t like it for more than the token fun times it represents on Day 1 of the trip.
4. Fashion - if I tried to dress like a native Melbourne person I would inevitably look like I had rolled on my bedroom floor and emerged with whatever mess stuck to me. Melbourne has boho ragged down to a fine art. Luckily, they accept all fashion types and the artsworker chic I offered up was a-okay.
5. AFL – if it weren’t for a number of Melbourne teams I’m sure my little Brisbane Lions would do an overall better job. (Mainly wrote this one so folks like Timmy Dashwood have a shit fit and Janet McDonald laughs, hard.)
*Yes, this is a broad generalized and awful statement (the blog is supposed to be funny. Calm down.) Would it help if I said all people from Brisbane are backward bogans? Fine, done.
Conscious Club came to me through @sprbrodie who gifted me a wonderful Thai massage after finishing a job that left me knotted. Today, I got to pass on the token to a lovely and quiet hard worker to go enjoy a high tea with her Nan. #ConsciousCurrency #CC0536
