Kid at The Guitar Merchant 2/19/16
Kid brings the rock to an otherwise quiet night in the San Fernando Valley. With David Blake from Ohio, Joao Brandi from Brazil, and Johnny Brown from Pennsylvania, the eclectic trio combines funk, blues, and folk to create a refreshing and energetic rock sound.
Kid starts off their set with their latest single “Rollin Back,” where David Blake’s voice soars high over a white-boy funk bass line. The groove is enough to get some audience members up and dancing. The highlight of the song is when David yells, “put myself back together, from all the damage that you’ve done.” Its’ aggressive delivery and unexpected directness is a satisfying contrast to the rest of the song.
Throughout the set, Johnny Brown gracefully holds down the grooves on drums looking stylish in a gold tie and black shirt. He looks out into the audience and smiles at the girls who are dancing.
Lead guitarist, Jaao Brandi keeps his solos fresh. During one song, he hunches over his amp with his guitar and summons feedback like a crying siren. At another point, he uses his teeth to pluck the guitar strings.
David’s songwriting deals with love, pain, and growing up in a confusing world. His melodies are energetic and catchy yet they never fail to evoke strong emotions. This is due to his frank lyrics and vulnerable delivery.
Further into the set, Kid quiets down to cover Elliott Smith’s “Plain Clothes Man” and David switches to electric guitar. They also cover “Next Girl” by The Black Keys. One of my favorites from the show is “The Daily News” where David sings, “I get over shit and then I start things up again.” The song then transforms into a waltz with a descending bass line that fills the room with a feeling of suspense.
