āPop entertainers in the ā60s had no experience with fame. It takes a balanced personality, beyond that usually attracted to entertainment, to be able to handle it. I knew Jimi [Hendrix] and Janis [Joplin], and I know they both came to music out of loneliness. I once heard Jimi sing backstage, singing full out, like he never did onstage. When I told him it sounded great he gave me this embarrassed laugh, like a kid rejecting a compliment.ā - Peter Tork, The Boston Globe (August 10, 1989)< ā[We would] watch him from backstage. What he did was simply exquisite. I loved to watch the way his hands worked ā it came so easily to him it looked as if he wasnāt playing at all. Most guitar players have so much tension in their arms, they hunch over. But the easier you are ā and Jimi was extraordinarily easy with it ā the wider your range of expression.ā - Peter Tork, A Biography of Jimi Hendrix by Charles R. Cross (2006) āMichael and I would sit backstage and listen [to Jimi Hendrix] and just marvel.ā - Peter Tork, Newsday (April 14, 2007) On another Hendrix note āHendrix injured his right ankle ā the one which was originally broken and caused him to be invalided out of the US Army ā while a passenger in Monkee Peter Torkās GTO car at Malibu Beach, Los Angeles, at the weekend. Tork was not in the car, which was spun round three times when another car crashed into it at a filling station. Co-passenger with Hendrix was Byrdsā Dave Crosby, but the Hendrix injury was not bad enough to prevent him continuing his tour.ā - "Jimi hurt in Monkee Peterās car,ā Disc & Music Echo (July 15, 1967) āWell, after Monterey, I got back down to L.A. and met Jimi at Peterās house. We decided to go out to my house at the beach. Peter lent me his car, a burgundy GTO hardtop that was given to him by Pontiac. I loved it. My Rolls Royce was busted down. And so we all piled into his GTO and drove out to the beach. I was driving along Pacific Coast Highway when, all of a sudden, this Pontiac, just the smoke, was everywhere. I started to pull over and some idiot creamed me in the back. Instead of stomping on the brakes, I floored it and got the car under control and then pulled over. And then, the cops came and all they did was get Jimiās bottle of whiskey away from him. We went down the street and bought another one. But the cops gave us all a ride to my house.ā - Stephen Stills, Canyon of Dreams: The Magic and Music of Laurel Canyon (2009)
