I was giffing scenes of Lockwood smiling at Lucy and I've noticed that most of the moments where he is vulnerable and confesses stuff about himself or we see what he really thinks/feels even if he doesn't openly says it, happen outside. One example is ep. 5 when Lucy tells him that he was begging the guy to kill him and adds that he can talk to her if he needed to and he gives her that rueful smile because he wants to tell her but... how do you tell someone that you have a death-wish and open yourself up after years of manufacturing a perfect mask for yourself? I think Lucy probably started suspecting by then. Lockwood is only able to take off his careful constructed mask when he's risking his life in the literal sense, and he's not in his house. His house represents his inner world and is one of his most intimate and also his most bittersweet possession because it reminds him of his dead family and their past together and the person he was before they died. On the contrary, the scenes where Lucy is most vulnerable and confesses things of her past to Lockwood happen in her bedroom which is, not casually, Lockwood's old bedroom if I don't remember wrong. In Lucy's room they also have these cute slow burn moments where they smile to each other like in ep. 4 when we see how Lockwood's eyes look at Lucy's lips but he doesn't dare to lean in and kiss her because it would mean crossing a line. Same in ep. 6 when Lucy is preparing for the Fittes ball and Lockwood gives her his sister's necklace. This gesture takes Lockwood a step further towards Lucy. The culmination of this dynamic peaks in the last episode when Lockwood has the panic attack because shit is getting real and he doesn't know how to handle that and he goes into survival mode and Lucy tries to take him back to reality. And the circle of this season closes with Lockwood finally deciding to reveal to Lucy and George what's in the room on the first floor. This moment represents Lockwood finally making himself vulnerable in his house (symbol of his most intimate world) and letting the people he cares about the most in or a little in.

"We'll go carefully, I promise."

This simple phrase might just be the most underrated line uttered between Lockwood and Lucy.

This we'll go carefully from the world's most reckless boy. It's an acknowledgement that he knows he's far too impulsive and blasé about life but she isn't. It's a vow to change his behavior because it's what she needs. It's the gentle but very specific promise to be careful with her so she doesn't get hurt.

For so long Lucy has been disregarded and used. Her safety and happiness and comfort, as well as those she cares about, was irrelevant to anyone with power.

Now the man she technically works for, whose roof she lives under, is saying he'll listen to her, he'll respect her wishes, and he believes her. And Lucy believes him, because he says it while apologizing, while patching her up and addressing his own faults and wrongdoings.

That is so important for their relationship, both as friends and anything further. That moment right there is the foundation, and the moment many argue their relationship definitively changes from friends/coworkers to taking on a romantic glint.

We've only gotten four episodes after that moment, but of all the screw ups Lockwood has, he kept the promise he made in that scene- he doesn't tell anyone about her ability no matter how much attention or benefit they could get from it and he chooses to trust her judgement with regards to her own power (Bickerstaff's Manor and going into the catacombs alone, for example).

In short I think that line is so tremendously important and deserves so much attention and not just because of how badly he obviously wants to kiss her in that moment.

whoever said that the reason lucy says “whatever happens it’s not your fault” to george in the finale is because after the incident at her previous agency she blamed herself for what happened and didn’t want george to have that same guilt, i hope you know i think about it every single day and i hate you

I think the little ways they show Lockwood’s recklessness right in the beginning are so interesting because of how they change. In the first episode, he forgets the chains and doesn’t pay attention when he breaks the circle of filings. That’s his first case with Lucy, it hurts them BOTH, and we don’t actually see him being forgetful about equipment after that. In fact, he’s extremely clever with ensuring they have a good flare for the Fairfax incident. Because being forgetful now means endangering the people he loves, so he stops and becomes more careful in that regard.

But his love for his friends also increases his recklessness in other regards. He offers himself up to Winkman easily and desperately to save Lucy, where before he might’ve just antagonized him. He makes stupid bets with Kipps to prove he’s the best, which I think is a way of proving himself to them. He basically intends to go against an insanely powerful ghost (Bickerstaff) on his own, AFTER BEING SHOT, to protect them.
