adriana was curious about the young, striking woman outside the club. it might've been the three cocktails that she downed before, looking for something that could make the time fly faster. she felt a knot forming in her stomach - why was she suddenly so anxious about approaching this stranger? it wasn't like her, the social butterfly who knew how to talk and smile and laugh, making everyone around fall in love with her.
"you waiting for someone?" was all that she could think of at the moment.
"just enjoying the weather" the mysterious woman replied, making a vague gesture with the cigarette in her hand.
there was something about her that made adriana think about actresses from the hollywood's golden age. this weird mixture of decadent class, confident gaze and a touch of mischief behind her eyes.
"you do?" adriana looked up at the deep gray sky, its cold droplets shattering before her. "yeah, if you need anything, i'll be right there" trying not to wrinkle her nose from the cold of the new jersey autumn, she pointed behind the club door.
"wait, i don't even know your name" the woman turned to adriana, swallowing the last breath of her cigarette. "you are the owner here?"
"something like that" adriana bit her lip, unsure what to do next. why was she overthinking this situation so much? it was just another one of the club girls, ones that come and go once they get their fix of colourful booze and loud music. yet, something in her made her heart flutter, praying that her cheeks won't flush. who was she, a schoolgirl waiting anxiously behind the classroom door with a handmade valentine card? "adriana" she shook the elegant woman's hand with a sudden flash of confidence. "adriana la cerva."
"adriana..." the woman repeated, seemingly tasting every vowel. she held adriana's hand - was it a millisecond too long for a random encounter? "what a pretty name" she sighed. "very fitting, i would say, looking at who it belongs to." adriana didn't know what to say, she smiled helplessly and nodded.
"tell me, adriana la cerva, what would you say to a little adventure?" the woman maintained the eye contact with a certainty of someone who recognises their worth. "a night like this..." she looked above, once again gesturing at something with her lightly glowing cigarette. "a night like this shouldn't be wasted at work."
"but i..." adriana started to look for an excuse, not used to women being so forward with her. of course, she's had a fair share of vomit-inducing proposals from men that frequented this place. they weren't even close to worthy opponents, she shut them down almost instinctively at this point. but this one was different, this one made her actually consider abandoning her post... just for tonight.
"oh, honey, don't tell me you're not overworked" the woman put out a cigarette and rested her hand on her hip. dressed in this ridiculously flowing black dress and countless strings of pearls. midnight air was filled with a slight scent of jasmine and something heavier - was it amber? maybe patchouli?
whatever it was, it was clearly enough to make adriana's switch flick in a split second. "oh, alright, fuck it, i need to get out of this place, even if it's just for a moment" she sighed, suddenly irritated by neverending bass and chatter coming from the club.
the woman smiled. she offered her arm to adriana, clearly mocking the chivalrous act. in a theatrical manner she lowered her voice and said, smirking, "after you, m'lady?"
adriana laughed, unsure how to react. still, something made her yearn for a spontaneous night like this. she accepted the arm, along with performing a curtsy. "thank you so much, my dear lady" she played along, putting on a high-pitched voice, suitable for a cartoon princess. "now, where the night will take us?"
with a last glance at the club's glowing neon, she followed the mysterious woman. her pearls clicked with every step they made, the air got even heavier with sweet, cloying jasmine. exactly what she needed in the middle of unusually cold autumn. just one night, just this one chance to catch a breath and be herself again, unburdened, wild and happy.
