What’s one thing you can never say no to?
“I can say no to anything....except mangos”
ares-trilling·:
“It’s not a subject many know about. People tend to know the basics, the sun, the solar system, the galaxy. You start getting into more complex studies and that’s where you lose people because so much of what people are taught is simplified. Like the solar system. We’re taught in school that the planets revolve around the sun which only technically true because of how big the sun is. If the sun was smaller we would see that the planets don’t revolve around the sun at all.”
~
It made sense to Carmen that the more complex it got the more people sort of went off from it. Felt that way about a lot of things. Of course it wasn’t an exact comparison, but she’d had trainees that wanted to stop at the more ‘simplified’ weapons. “What do the revolve around then?” she asked curious, even if she might not fully comprehend the more he explained.
ares-trilling·:
“I do. I’m over in the science wing teaching Astrophysics. It’s a relatively small department compared to where I’ve taught before but I’m doing my best at making it my own.” His work had been something he had been struggling with recently. Usually he was so engrossed in it but other than his students he seemed to have no one to share with.
~
Carmen had never been to school, not in the sense that non-shadowhunters did. While it didn’t mean she was uneducated, something like astrophysics wasn’t exactly at the top of the list of things to know about. Then again it might not be for others, not like herself, either. “I have to admit I don’t know much on the subject. From the name I can guess what it’s about, but beyond that not much.”
evanixkamat·:
Evani shrugged. “I’m not sure if I have enough skill to try to use it anywhere else.” She sighed and awkwardly glanced down at her hands. “I found my familiar though… His name is Nathan. I don’t know if you know about them?” She asked. “He’s supposed to help me with it but.. I might not really be worth it anymore.” She chuckled. “I’m a little too old and my magic… Probably isn’t as strong as it used to be.”
~
“They’re supposed to help enhance a witch’s magic, and they can take on an animal form. I don’t know much else beyond that.” Carmen had always been one to study up on the different kinds of non-humans, though she had to admit that she was better versed in some than others. “Of course you’re worth it Evani. Maybe this is a way to make your magic stronger.” she said before feeling her phone buzz. “Hold on, sorry.” she said pulling it out to read the text, and then tucking it back in her pocket. “Sorry to cut this short, but I need to go. Emergency.” she gave a slight apologetic smile. “I’ll see you later, if you need anymore information on your contact let me know.” she started for the door “and you’re not a little too old, Evani.” she chuckled before heading out.
ares-trilling·:
“Right. Now that i’ve said it out loud it seems rather stupid to ask if they would do something during the winter months.” He frowned, running a hand over his hair. “I’m sorry, small talk isn’t something i’m very good at and I didn’t quite know what to say since I wasn’t particularly helpful when it came to any insight on what happened the night of the party.”
~
“It’s fine. I wouldn’t exactly say small talk is my forte either.” She was more used to talking ‘business’ with people or when she was back at the institute training, whether they be the younger shadowhunters or training on the usage of new weapons. “You teach over at the university, right?”
ares-trilling·:
“I wish I could be of some help but unfortunately I have no idea. I was pretty heavily affected. I just assumed someone spiked the drinks.” There was so much still left in the dark when it came to the Halloween party. Still, he tried not to think about it too much. There were many things in this town that didn’t always make sense. Most of all the people. “Do you know if they do any kind of winter celebration?”
~
“I haven’t ruled that out as a possibility” It wasn’t implausible to think that there was a potion that could do what had happened. If the one who made it was strong enough in their skills. She made a mental note to ask around if such a potion was even possible. “I’m not sure, but if they did one for Halloween it would only make sense for a winter celebration.” In her experience most places at least had a little something, like lighting a tree or a place to go ice skating.

“Well that seems like a bad idea waiting to happen” Carmen said gesturing up towards the mistletoe. It was just behind Ares, if the man took even a step back he would have hit it with the back of his head. “Do you think Nova will settle for some kisses?” she asked, not sure how she felt about kissing someone she’d only just recently met just because someone tacked up something green.
ares-trilling·:
-
“I’m sure she’ll look forward to seeing you too. She’s far more sociable than I am.” He gave a small smile before slipping his hands into his pockets. “Uh, well that is the subject of the time isn’t it. Out of sorts I suppose. Though better than I was. I didn’t have the best time at the party and it left me struggling a little. I’m on the up again now though. How have you been? Did you go to the party?”
~
“I’ve been busy. I’m trying to figure out who was behind what happened. Actually, any help you can provide would be appreciated.” she said, not quite ready to go into inquisitor mode, but going to leave the conversation open-ended for him to talk about it if he wanted. “I did. It was eventful.” and not in the good way.
evanixkamat·:
-
Evani chuckled. “Well, I’m not going to lie and say I’ve never thought about the curses. I mean, I’m sure I’ve come into contact with at least one or two.” She told her with a shrug. “Although, I’ve never really had that much experience with magic.” She told her. “I usually… Well, I usually just use magic to locate things and to check in on my parents.” She smiled softly at her.
~
“Have you never tried using it for anything else?” she asked, finding it interesting if Evani really had only used her magic in such a limited way. There was such a thing as doing too much, or rather using your magic in a way to harm others, but Carmen knew that not all magic was bad. She’d even been aided by warlocks and their magic over the years while on missions or in regards to dealing with demons or others that had stirred up trouble.
evanixkamat·:
-
Evani’s eyes widened. “You… wait what? You saved their life?” She asked, very amazed. “That’s so cool, Carmen. I wish I was as brave as you were.” Evani told her friend. “I spent all my time digging around in the dirt.” She chuckled. “The most exciting thing that happens to me during my day job is when I find an interesting bone… or a rock.” She admitted with a small shrug.
~
“It really wasn’t anything” Carmen shook her head, finally moving to take a seat. “Oh don’t sell yourself short, Evani, bones and rocks can be very exciting and dangerous.” she smiled a little at her friend. “plus you never know about ancient curses and all that.”
ares-trilling·:
“Carmen, right?” Ares held his hand out in greeting. “I don’t know if you remember but we met at the Halloween festival. I recognised you so I thought I’d come over and say hello. Unless you don’t remember me then I will respectfully walk away. I am after all missing my most recognisable feature today. Nova is at home for the time being.” @carmenxurrego·
~
“Yes, I remember, Ares” Carmen said taking his hand to give it a shake. It was definitely a name that wasn’t easily forgettable. “Well, I’ll look forward to seeing her on our next encounter” she smiled a little as he mentioned that Nova was home. “How have you been since Halloween?”
francisxcruz·:

Francis raised their eyebrows.” Kinky, I like my chances I just might kick you again.” The shapeshifter rolled their eyes.” But isn’t it? Aren’t friends suppose to entertain each other in their time of need? Like this moment right now, I need something.” They whined, very tempted to kick her again Francis gave her a gentle kick to the leg curious to her reaction.
~
“Hate to break it to you, but I’m not entertaining.” Interesting maybe, but Carmen had never seen herself as the type to be entertaining. When they kicked her again she grabbed their wrist, quickly turning and twisting their arm behind their back. “are you going to stop it?”
evanixkamat·:
-
Evani nodded and smiled. “Yeah, I think it’ll be okay. I once had to consult on something over Skype and the connection kept cutting out.” She laughed. “If they can send things over physically, that would help so much too.” Evani told her. “I hope I can help.” She smiled at her. “I mean, it’s unfortunate I can’t travel but it’s not a deal breaker for my line of work.” She told her. “How did you say you knew this person?” Evani asked.
~
>“I think there should be a couple of ways to contact in there.” She was fairly certain she’d seen an email, a phone number, and some sort of screen name probably Skype. “They’re a friend.” they’d met after she’d saved them from a demon when she was visiting the shadowhunters institute there. “May or may not have saved their life, but that’s no big deal”
carmenxurrego:
“It was the chicken tenders and a coke. Can I get a side of ranch and ketchup with it?”
~
“Chicken tenders and a coke with a side of ranch and ketchup. Got it,” Hunter repeated with a nod, writing it all down before giving her a smile. “Coming right up!”
evanixkamat·:
-
Oh. Evani shook her head a few times and cleared her throat. It’s not that she didn’t want to leave… Evani couldn’t. “I mean…That’s very nice of them.” She smiled. “But uh… I… uh… Can’t really leave the UK.” She told her with nervous laugh. “It sounds ridiculous but I promise, it’s for a good reason.” The brunette told her.
~
“Fair enough” Carmen was curious as to why the other woman couldn’t leave, but this wasn’t a scenario in which she needed to pry and get information out of someone, so she let it be. “You might be able to have them send you more pictures and video footage of the ones they wouldn’t be able to send over physically.”
hunterxmarin:
~
“Oh, well, as long as you have a reason,” Hunter said with a rueful laugh. “Oh, right, I was taking your order. What was it again? Sorry, I forgot to write it down.”
~
“It was the chicken tenders and a coke. Can I get a side of ranch and ketchup with it?”
hunterxmarin·:
~
“Awesome,” Hunter said with a slight laugh. “Seriously, though, are you a vigilante of some kind? That’s pretty cool. I mean, as long as you’re putting away bad guys and not just going around punching people you don’t like.”
~
“It’s something like that” she said, “No, don’t worry. We have rules. No just going around punching people we don’t like. If I punch someone it’s for a reason.”
