The 2006 Renault R26

Even if you count out the 2005 title because “the FIA did my boy Michael dirty,” the 2006 championship still began with Renault having a superior car, and Fernando (and Fisichella) took it to victory at seven of the first nine races. The car used a counterbalancing weight to keep the chassis stable, and that made it phenomenally fast.

But then in a strange twist of fate, the FIA did to Renault what it did to Ferrari the year prior, and banned the “tuned mass damper” as Renault called it, because it was “a movable aerodynamic device” (what a load of BS). Because it moved and helped the aerodynamics by keeping the car stable they said, it was in breach of the rules. The R26, built around the damper, immediately slowed down, and Ferrari took five of the last seven races. Heck, they’d have won the title if not for a car retirement for Michael at Suzuka. Nevertheless, Renault was able to retain its substantial lead over Ferrari, and they won both the WDC and the WCC.

Anyway, here’s a paper model I made of Fernando’s car (as seen at Interlagos) earlier this last year, in 1:24 scale.
