Back in Sekiro, all characters cursed with the shadow of Shura are related to animals. Sekijo, orangutan. Sekiro, wolf. Then, we have Messmer and snakes. As both of them, Messmer is known as a fierce warrior that conquered his title with fire and blood. And those who go on killing will eventually become Shura...

The divine heritage comes from the Divine Dragon, who's grafted to a tree while wielding golden lightning. Godwyn was the only divine child able to conquer the golden lightning of the dragons, but even when his soul was killed, he was unable to die. And such stagnation, much as the dragonrot, brought blight over the lands.
