Katherine tucked her handkerchief into her pocket and tried not to waver drunkenly as she padded into their kitchen for some water. “Morning, sweetheart,” she muttered. “Sleep good? It was awfully warm last night, wasn’t it?”
carryindabanner:
Jack watched her with a weary eye as she walked into the kitchen, she’d been acting off for a few days. “Mornin’ sugar.” He pulled his robe tighter around him, their little apartment was drafty as ever.
“It would be with you hoggin’ all th’ blankets. Couldn’t even snag a corner from ya.”
“Sorry.” Tea. That’s what she should be making. Tea to soothe her throat and relieve her aching body. Ah, well.
Blearily, she searched through their kitchen to find their kettle, which seemed to move around depending on the day. Had they not yet found its appropriate shelf? “Want tea?”
“Made some already.” He held up the cup in his hand. “‘s in th’ pot if ya want any. Been up for a few hours already. Got a deadline, an’ Sietz is breathin’ down my neck.”
Jack had his a drawing out on his drawimg desk, he’d only taken a break to get caffeine in his veins.
“You feelin’ alright, ace? Ya look a lil’ pale.”
“Oh.” The kettle was already on the stove. Slowly, to appease her aching joints, she grabbed a mug and poured her drink.
Despite the fatigue she was wrapped in, she managed a snicker. “When aren’t I pale,” she muttered. “It’s hardly a blue moon.”
“I mean more than usual.” True, his wife of only a few months was fair skinned by nature, a striking contrast to his tanned complexion, but this was different.
Jack got up from his spot at the table and crossed over to her, putting the back of his cool hand against her forehead and cheeks with the sort of practice one would have after looking after numerous children like he had at the lodging house.
“Katherine, ya hot.”
“How very sweet of you.” She brushed his hand away and started preparing a little breakfast. It wasn’t much, but it would sustain her. “Did you already eat this morning?”
“No, I mean ya burning up.” His brow furrowed in concern. “Sugar, why don’t you go lay back down. I’m sure we can scrape together enough t’ afford you takin’ a sick day.”
Jack reached for one of her hands. There were so many illnesses going around, he wouldn’t risk Katherine catching one of them proper.

good good newsies boys (x)
“Hey, let’s run away together— let’s elope.”
@carryindabanner
She snorted, glancing at Jack over her notebook. “Very funny,” she said, flipping through the pages and leaving inky fingerprints on the corners. “Did Race bet you couldn’t convince me?”
carryindabanner:
He rolled his right shoulder, trying to get the stiffness to leave it, the nightly climb up three floors of ladders certainly didn’t help it.
Jack scoffed. “Like either o’ us is able t’ afford a honeymoon. Bet we’d have t’ be at work th’ day after we got married.”
His eyes were set on her, he liked watching her work, seeing the gears in her brain move along with her fingers in her type writer, piecing together hard truths to hopefully expose the less flattering side of their city and make things better.
“I’m serious though, ace. Let’s elope. I mean we is already very good at the fun part o’ marriage. We’s both adults, with employment. We could do it.”
She looked up at him again with an arched eyebrow. “Are you asking me to marry you?” she asked, only half-joking. Jack found a new way to surprise her every day–this must be the day’s shock.
She smirked. “Where in New York could we possibly fit all your boys? They wouldn’t let us get married if they weren’t there to see it.’
“Yeah.” He chuckled. “I guess I is askin’.”
He hadn’t thought much beyond asking her. Jack scratched at the back of his neck. He was more concerned on trying to make it happen without her father interfering. Though they were civil, he knew Pulitzer still held out hope that maybe Katherine would get over her infatuation with him.
“Does that mean you is sayin’ yes?”

carryindabanner:
“Nah, just…it’s an idea. If we do I don’t gotta convince ya father t’ let me. We’d already be hitched by th’ time ya father would know.”
There was a smirk on his face and a twinkle in his eyes as he leaned back against her windowsill, enjoying the light breeze coming the Manhattan skyline, straight to the fire escape to Katherine’s room.
“I mean as much as I enjoy sneaking in here t’ see ya at night, it do take a lot o’ work.”
“I’m sorry I put you out so much,” she teased. “You know society girls. We’re terribly high maintenance.”
It took conscious effort to turn away from the vision in her windowsill and back to her work. Her desk was littered with her notes that she had to whittle down into a story–or at least the beginnings of a draft–by tomorrow morning. “Three guesses where you’d like to honeymoon.”

"Get away!" Katherine sent a fiery curse down the stone corridor, forcing the platoon of Death Eaters to scatter. It was just like Katherine to try and take on so many of them at once; her Gryffindor husband, wherever he was, had rubbed off on her. She faced the retaliating spells unflinchingly, throwing up a Shield charm and preparing to weather the storm. The spells bounced around the room, hitting the already crumbling walls. "That all you got?"
@withcameraandpen
Jack saw a flash of auburn hair and went bolting into a fire fight, not even thinking twice. He knew his wife. Her voice.
He grabbed her arm, with a loud pop they disapparated, he wasn’t going to lose her. Not when he’d already seen to many folks he knew fall.
He stumbled when they apparated into an empty classroom. “Have you gone mental? You they were gonna kill ya! There was at least a dozen there!”
“Do y’know what type o’ wood the stick up ya father’s ass is? Askin’ fo’ a friend.”
@carryindabanner
“Come on, Jack!” They had the patio to themselves after an explosive supper, though the timer had been ticking since they first arrived at Chatwold last week. Surely Jack could see it. Surely he knew to behave himself–well, tonight proved otherwise very decisively, didn’t it?
“He was goading you! How couldn’t you see?”
carryindabanner:
“I didn’t fall fo’ nothin’! He was actin’ like I can’t support a family on my salary! I ain’t gonna just lie down an’ let him drag me through th’ mud in front o’ folks!”
Joseph’s words had really upset him, but he could’ve grinned and bared it if it hadn’t been in front of Katherine’s whole family. It was exactly what Joe had wanted, a reaction.
Not only that but Jack got up and stormed out of the dining room at the end of their shouting match. And yeah, he had Katherine’s mother in his corner, Katie had been a fan of Jack from the beginning, but that didn’t take away the sting of his wife’s father suggesting that he wouldn’t be able to keep a kid fed and clothed, not that he and Katherine were looking to have a kid any time soon anyway.
“No, you wouldn’t.” This happened more often than Katherine could stomach. Her father was a lifelong needler, an expert in finding people’s weaknesses, but Jack’s was clear as day: his pride.
And that pride would keep him locked in this battle, which was exactly what her father wanted. He wanted to illustrate Jack’s immaturity, and he was doing a damn fine job.
“Have at it, then. Keep fighting him on it. Keep giving him what he wants. Goodnight, Jack.”
Her dismissing him like that didn’t help. He reached for her arm. “Hey, we’s talkin’ ya can’t just walk away! Its almost like you is takin’ his side, y’know. Ya didn’t stand up fo’ me at dinner an’ now you is just actin’ as if th’ fact ya father’s words hurt me don’t mean nothin’.”
Jack was looking for an argument he could win at this point. He wanted something, anything he could cling on to to prove he was not in the wrong.

“I saw it! Ya act like I couldn’t see what he was doin’!”
He couldn’t, in fact, tell that he was just being wound up by the elder Pulitzer. He took the bait every time it was offered. And it usually ended like this.
“Also, what gives him th’ right t’ talk ‘bout my income like he ain’t th’ one signin’ my checks. Ya father don’t play fair, an’ maybe if he’d unclench a lil’ he’d see that it don’t matter if I can’t afford more than a one bedroom in Brooklyn an’ that you an’ I is content.”
“He did this all through our engagement, so what makes you think he’d stop when we tied the knot?”
She had held out hope for that, doubtful but growing nonetheless. Her father was getting a little less coarse, but his newfound gentleness did not extend to Jack.
She raked her hands through her hair. “Is it too much to ask not to fall for it?”
“I didn’t fall fo’ nothin’! He was actin’ like I can’t support a family on my salary! I ain’t gonna just lie down an’ let him drag me through th’ mud in front o’ folks!”

In Celebration of Father’s Day, ask my muse (or the mun) anything about his/her father.
"It's okay, baby," Katherine murmured to little Teddy Lupin, barely a month old and already an orphan. When Katherine found herself pregnant after Jack's death, Tonks and her mother had gladly taken her in, eager to give support (and gain an extra pair of hands, Tonks always joked). Death's cloak had descended upon the Wizarding World, bringing Tonks and Remus Lupin into its fold after the Battle at Hogwarts. Now she, Teddy, and Andromeda were alone, and Andy had gone to answer the door.
@withcameraandpen
Teddy had been fussy for last few hours, hair a steady shade of pink as he wailed for his mother who wouldn’t be coming to sooth him again. Certainly he wasn’t having this woman who was trying to offer him comfort.
Jack looked like hell, he felt hollow after all he’d been through and seen, especially that last battle. Hogwarts in ruins, and the dead. All those who were laid out in the great hall, some of them children, and among them was his best friend and her husband. He had her wand, he felt it only right to return it to her mother before going to find Katherine.
carryindabanner:
“She was right. I’m glad you’ve not been alone. Look at you though, Katherine.” He was taking in all he had missed, absorbing it like a sponge.
“A baby. That’s the first good thing I heard in weeks. Not since I went deeper into hiding. I couldn’t risk it, y’know. I couldn’t leave any trace behind with Ted.”
She nodded. “I know, I understand. I even hoped that was the case when you didn’t contact us. Andy wasn’t so optimistic–oh, Andy! She’ll want to know about Ted’s death. If you know anything…but later.”
Her hands cradled his face. He was thinner, and hollower than she remembered. “If you’re here,” she said, “you must have heard. The Battle of Hogwarts. He’s dead.”
His face was unreadable. “I was there. It’s over. It’s really over this time, Katherine. It was awful. And then I didn’t see you, and all the bodies in the great hall. You wasn’t there neither. And I was so glad.”
Jack’s eyes were watering, he swallowed a lump in his throat, the images still remained crisp in his mind’s eye. “Tonks and Lupin-“ he started. There was something almost out of body about seeing your best friend’s corpse laid out next her husband’s. Seeing all those dead who were too young to die. So many students and. “Fred Weasley.”

Jack was in a state of shock at the sight of her, he’d not been expecting her to have changed much but oh how she had in the months he’d been away.
No one had mentioned a baby, not a single soul at Hogwarts, of course there were more important things to worry about when you’re on a battlefield.
“When did this happen?” He gestured once he’d pulled away from their embrace.
She laughed, but it sounded like a gasp as her eyes welled with tears. “I found out after you and Ted ran,” she explained, her hands spreading across his chest. Yes, he was alive and well, if a little on the lean side, but nothing a hot meal and a warm bed couldn’t fix. It was unbelievable that after the losses of the past year, which reached a striking peak after the Battle of Hogwarts, Katherine should be granted a boon. Her husband was home. Her baby would know their father.
“When Ted died, I thought–we all thought–”
She choked, tears cascading down her face. “Andy insisted I come stay with her. Said I shouldn’t live alone in my condition.”
“She was right. I’m glad you’ve not been alone. Look at you though, Katherine.” He was taking in all he had missed, absorbing it like a sponge.

carryindabanner:
“I’m sorry, I tried. I tried.” Jack felt broken offering Nymphadora’s wand to Andromeda. “I tried to help but I couldn’t.” He was apologizing for the death of his best friend, he’d seen her grieving over her husband’s body, he’d seen her aunt coming up, he’d tried to stop it from happening but couldn’t move fast enough.
“I thought I should return this before I go looking for Katherine.”
Andromeda pulled away, the momentary brightness in her eyes gone. Her family was all gone except for her granddaughter now. They were either dead, or they may as well be. But now, Andromeda found herself in the company of another young woman who had become a niece.
A niece who didn’t know her husband was waiting here.
“Katherine’s here.”
Jack felt his breath catch in his throat at those two words. Putting hope in the place of grief. He’d been so worried, no one had seen Katherine at Hogwarts and he’d feared the worst happened, pure blood only gets you so far if you married a muggle born.
“She’s-She’s here?” If he had Katherine, then maybe something close to normalcy could be found once more.
She nodded. “She’s putting Teddy down for a nap. Wait here.”
In a few moments, Katherine turned from the crib and found Andromeda waiting in the doorway. “Give Teddy to me,” she said over his wails. She reached out for the baby and explained, “He’s alive. Jack is alive and waiting downstairs.”
“Jack?” she gasped, clutching her six-month belly. He was alive. Her husband was alive—and waiting just a stairwell away! All the grief and uncertainty had had a happy end after all!
“Thank you, Andy!” she said as she rushed out. She hurried out as fast as her bulky form would allow, clambering down the stairs until her eyes alit on Jack, skinny and battered and alive. A cry escaped her, a desperate sob of gratitude.
“Jack!”
