Apparently, the spinner shark and blacktip shark look so similar that there's some uncertainty about their correct distribution geographically. The two share the same unique coloration– that being light gray/brown with black tips on the fins. Hence, y’know, blacktip shark.

Another trait shared between the two is in their behavior– to feed, both blacktip sharks and spinner sharks will propel themselves up through a school of fish– and that momentum leads them to breach the water up into the air in a fucking badass spinning display. Hence, spinner shark.

…So, in summary, both sharks have black tipped fins and spin, but only one is the ‘blacktip’ shark and one is the ‘spinner’ shark. …Can’t imagine why there’s been any confusion between the two.
