Enjoy reading. Also note Blue Text is implied spoken/written Korean.
"Did it go in?" Minho gleefuly asks his companions whether the coin had hit the water.
The flock of people who joined him for the trip, all giggled, unsure whether the coin had gone in, considering the odd angle Minho threw it, but they tried to reassure him that the Trevi fountain was big enough and it probably did.
"Ah ah, let's go for some food" the dark haired man suggests, wrapping his arm over the shoulder of his manager and the Korean local who would be their guide and translator.
As they navigate the winding streets, the cobblestoned paths, Minho and his group weren't too far from the fountain, but they had stopped in front of a semi busy restaurant. The constant flow of people in and out of the door, seemed promising and it helped that it smelt great coming from the general direction of the restaurant.
The translator, walks in, managing to secure a table at a secluded corner, inviting the rest to come in and take a seat so they could have dinner.
It was a typical night of food, wine and chatter for Minho, and the topics would range from sports, future schedule, gossip about his presence at the show and naturally about the SHINee members.
"Minho-ssi how many coins did you throw in?" the local asks.
"Hmm only one. Should I have done more?"
"Oh, there is more to the fountain than coming back to Rome"
"Mhm mhm, I heard that there is fountain that you can drink from. If you drink from it with your partner, you two would be in love forever", one of the stylists speaks out, sighing dreamily at the prospect.
"Oooh, I heard if you throw 2 coins in, you will meet with an attractive Italian and fall in love", another peer interjects,
"3 and you marry the person you meet", one of the other stylists comments.
The stylists chatter amongst themselves, giggling like highschoolers about the prospect of staying in Italy, madly in love, like it was written out of a KDrama.
Minho's head sinks, chuckling slightly. He had never seen his team so relaxed, it was quite fitting. Currently the situation back home was so hectic, and this, was a nice change of pace. Minho was always comfortable with his team, so it was a suprise that none of them mentioned the 'love' aspects of the superstitions surrounding the Trevi.
Once the meal was finished, there was minor conversations about the plan for the night. Do they just go back to the hotel or wander around for a bit, see more of the city while it was still busy and places were open.
It came to the decision that a wine-bar was a mere block away from the restaurant and they can sit there while they come up with a more solid plan.
"Hyung, I want to take more pictures, I'll follow you guys in, save me a glass" Minho calls out to his manager.
Walking towards the fountain once more, Minho whips out his phone, taking more snapshots of the area, attempting to capture that idyllic magic.
A part of him was tempted to throw more coins in. Minho wasn't exactly looking for love right now, but he wasn't opposed to it. At the age of 32, he has had his fair share of romances and heartbreaks but, he yet had to encounter one that was deemed life-changing.
He slowly turned around, turning his back on the water feature, digging his hand into the pocket of his coat. If there are coins in his pocket, it was meant to be to make that wish. Sure enough despite how stuffed his pockets were with receipts and tissue, he managed to dig out 3 euro coins from the depths of the pocket. Hmmm, just my luck, he quietly thinks to himself as he inspects the coins in his hand.
At the very least, Minho hoped for love, didn't need to be Italian, though he was open to the option, and he didn't need to be bound by future marriage either. Just love.
With a deep breath, he closed his eyes, pouring as much intention as he could before throwing the change over his shoulders.
"Yah, did you chuck in three coins?", an unfamiliar voice calls out that sounded very drunk.
With his eyes still closed, his head turns to follow the direction of the voice. As he opened them, he sees you.
Eyes tightly shut, head tilted back, with a soft smile on your lips. "Yes, I did three coins. What's the harm if it comes through...or not...", you hiccuped slightly with a laugh, as you straighten your head, struggling to open your eyes against the lights in the area.
To your surprise, your friend was not where you thought she was. Instead you were greeted by the sight of an asian Adonis, standing beside you, looking right at you. Large doe like eyes and soft lips, he stood tall next to you. Someone that attractive almost made you fumble with words.
In Minho's eyes, he was properly captivated by you. He thought your eyes were beautiful and the delicate pouted lips, was more than inviting. What he noticed the most was how bright your smile is, how your eyes almost disappears into your cheeks when you laughed.
"Idiot. I'm heeere." your friend's voice came from the other side of you with a smirk on the corner of her lips.
It was hard to look away. Damn. Can someone really be that good looking? The man offers you a sweet smile, nodding his head in greeting. While you did the same, there was another feeling in your stomach. He looked familiar. Yes, you were 3 bottles of red into the night, so maybe you are confusing a possible stranger as someone else, it would be rude to assume.
"Come on Y/N..., let's finish this bottle and gooo. Stop eye oogling randomers.." your friend's words were slurred and loud.
"You idiot! Shut up, we can't be seen as loud tourists" you sighed as you turn to face your friend, finally having a means of distraction.
You walk towards the small steps to pick up your bag and the bottle of wine covered in a brown paper bag, swiftly chugging its contents before wiping the corners of your lips.
Before you could even grab your friend's arms to drag her away. The man speaks up.
"Excuse me!", Minho calls out but unsure how to continue. He clearly heard your friend speak in Korean, however he assumes that she might be too drunk to even translate for him or unsure that she's register that they were speaking the same language. "Do.. you.. speak..korean?"
"I do!!!!! Yes. I do!! She can only speak a little bit, but sheeee understaaands!" your friend speaks on your behalf, while gesturing with her hands.
"Tsk. Calm down.. we'll get in trouble if you keep being a nuisance.." you sighed slightly annoyed, trying to hush your friend.
"So can I speak comfortably then?" Minho asks, his eyes slightly widening in hopefulness.
You nod your head, unsure what a possible stranger could want from you, but you assume he was a lost tourist and hearing a familiar language, meant he could ask for some help.
"I-uh... Would you like to go for a drink?" he finally blurts out his question.
Squinting your eyes you pointed at your friend, questioning if he meant her. But he quickly shakes his head pointing at you instead with a sheepish smile. Confused you pointed back at yourself as if asking if he was sure that he meant that he wanted to drink with you instead.
"Look at that!! Your wish came trueee Y/N!" your friend chirps, as she observes the shocked look on your face.
"Shut up" you groan in annoyance before tucking your lips inwards to bite them, trying to hide the smile that was creeping in.
"Is that, okay?" Minho asks.
"Yes", you nod your head as you finally release your grip on your friends arms, but the wine had hit you, causing you to stumble.
Luckily the man had caught you just in time, supporting you in his arms, which caught you offguard. The same thoughts formed in both of your heads. What in the k-drama nonsense is this? But why does it feel, okay?
You grab onto his arms to stabilize yourself, keeping your head down in embarrassment for acting sloppy in front of such a gorgeous man. You felt like a drunk idiot. You are a drunk idiot.
"I think she'll pass on any alcoholic drink" your friend mumbles, as she now holds onto you to keep the both of you upright.
"I think I saw a coffee hutch, I'll get you two something warm.." Minho trails off, quickly heading to the right of the fountain.
You and your friend links arms once more as you both stagger towards a more quieter part of the square, before settling not too far from the coffee hutch that Minho was in queue for. The both of you sit at the edge, hunched over, trying to shake away the inebriation that had overcome your senses.
By the time Minho had come back after spotting that the two of you have moved, he carried three coffee cups in his hands, one for himself and offering the other two to you and your friend. He notes that both of you were now barefoot with your shoes set aside and that you have specifically used a large scarf as a shawl to keep you warm.
"Thanks for the drink stranger. I am off to wander.." your friend quickly jump in, trying to play wing-man to the situation. "You two enjoy yourselves" a teasing tone laced in her voice.
She quickly waves the both of you goodbye and suddenly you were alone with someone you didn't know and it had dawned on you, you were too drunk to handle this properly, but you made the best effort to reply in a sober manner.
"Judging from how loud your friend is, I'm guessing your name is Y/N. I'm Minho"
You take a sip of your coffee, trying to formulate the correct words in your head, looking for a suitable reply. "Nice to meet you, Minho-ssi. Yes. I am Y/N". You bow to formally greet him this time.
"I don't know what your friend was on about. Your korean is pretty good!" Minho chuckles, settling to sit on the spot next to you.
A weakened laugh was all you could muster up right now and with your phone in your other hand, you quickly try to go to Papago, hopefully speaking to Minho in Korean might be more easier than speaking in English.
Minho notices the website on your phone after accidentally glancing at it. He gently waves his hand before pushing down the phone back to your lap, saying that it's okay for you to speak comfortably as well, that he would do his best to understand you too.
"So why... why did you ask me to have a drink?" you chose your words carefully trying not to make it complex.
"Is it wrong for me to say, I don't know?", Minho sighs halfheartedly, but you could only catch the second half of the sentence.
"Were you hoping that my friend stayed? So you could ask for help?"
"You are a tourist?", you set your coffee aside so you could quickly type on your phone and speakout the translation. "I thought you were a lost tourist and maybe needed help for directions or suggestions"
Minho lets out a small chuckled before shaking his head. "I want-..wanted to speak to you?", there was a cutness in him trying hard to speak in English.
"My god, do I really need to say it? I thought you were attractive and I shooted my shot. For a moment, it was like my last wish happened in an instant when I looked at you."
Judging by the look on your face, Minho could tell that he lost you somewhere, so he grabs his phone, imitating your actions before showing the screen to you with the rough translation displayed. This made you blush heavily. It was surprising how direct he was about it.
"Why? How many coins did you throw", you mimed the action of throwing the coin, hoping it would help Minho understand you a bit better.
He quickly responds by holding three fingers up before getting shy and soothed his embarassment by massaging the back of his neck. Minho looks away momentarily to clear his throat while drinking his coffee, heavily debating how stupid he must seem for approaching someone on the basis of their physical appearing.
As he turns to focus his attention on you again but was met with your phone held up and pointed at him.
I threw three coins in as well and when I opened my eyes, I saw you. Honestly I am far from being a shallow person, but I also noticed how good looking you were and I thought I was crazy for thinking someting happened when we locked eyes for a moment.
Minho's smile grew larger with each words, suddenly blushing again.
"Yah, maybe we are drunk.. This is stupid" he finally admits the absurdity of the situation, quickly typing a follow up mesaage for you.
The superstitions behind this fountain is crazy, don't you think? I think it's silly but I think it's wonderfully insane that I saw you right after I wished for love.
Your eyes widened reading the last few words.
You seem like a sweet guy. But we barely know each other, like buy me dinner or a drink first at least.
Minho cocks his brows to look up at yoh as he reads your screen. His hands reach back to shake the now empty coffee cup in front of you. "I did buy you a drink", he cockily smirks.
"Right, you did", you rolled your eyes, pursing your lips to hide a smile. Damn Minho was one sassy boy.
"Before I go to hotel. Let us know each other better" Minho suggests with an endearing grin.
Through broken English and Korean, you and Minho tried to squeeze in as much as you two could in speaking to each other, to know each other a little better this time. It was surprisingly easy and both of you were at ease in each other's presence. There were moments where you two shared laughter, playfully joking with the other and suddenly, despit the thinning crowd, you two were in your own bubble, conversing about life and other trivias. Even within the conversation, you two helped each other with the other's respective language.
"Mm, don't you need to go back to the hotel?"
"Yeah. I texted my team that I was still out. They probably left the wine bar already"
The man shook his head, Google searching the name of the hotel to plan the journey on foot. When he stated that it was only a 30 minute walk, you had enough resolve to put on your discarded shoes and jumping to a standing position.
"Come on, I'll walk you to the hotel. We can continue learning about each other. Uhh.. We can continue to speak", you offered out your hand to Minho.
The man looks up at you with this weird sense of awe and admiration in his eyes. For some reason, he couldn't shake away this butterfly feeling his stomach. You were so casual, carefree and seemed to adopt a 'living in the moment' attitude and in that moment. It seemed okay to hold each other's hands on the way back to the hotel.
Walking side by side, the both of you confidently held onto each other, using his phone to guide you back to the hotel and using your phone to keep Papago handy for any translation help.
How could 30 minutes feel both like a lifetime and yet so short. The same sentiment could be said for the both of you, it genuinely felt like you two had known each other forever but at the same time, never knew enough of each other, but you two would still want to be in contact with the other.
In the period of walking to the hotel, you had finally deduced that the reason Minho looked so familiar was because you recognized him as a member of SHINee. When you asked him if it was offputting that he was interacting with fan, he dismissed the idea that it was uncomfortable, going as far to say, that it was pleasant because at least you weren't acting like a crazy fan, but at least now he doesn't need to hide his celebrity status from you.
What Minho learns from your side is that you and your friend are still in the middle of your European inter-railing journey and that eventually, you might return to Rome for your post-grad degree. He also learns that you plan on visiting Korea soon, offering his service to be your guide, joking that he would enforce PT excercises on you, if your Korean had not improved by then.
His last comment left you stunned for a bit. You had assumed this night would just be a one off giggle. A sweet silly anecdote for the future, but to you, it seemed like he was implying that you two would still be touch, by the time you visited Korea.
"Yes. I would like for us to keep talking to each other.."
"Really?" you were bewildered. Was Choi Minho really asking you to link up.
"Of course. Why not?" Minho lowers his back a little so he would be closer to you, catching you off guard. "Do you not like me?"
The absurdity of his question made you scoff. Of course you liked him. You would be crazy not to like him, but again he is so direct and forward that you felt like he was just joking. You ignore his question, which left him wanting for more.
It wasn't long before you two finally ended up in front of Minho's hotel and the taxi you had booked to take you back home was parked in front, waiting for you.
Seeing the taxi made Minho's heart sink, was it really going to be the last time he'll see you? You had avoided every question and suggestion he made about keeping in touch with each other and everytime he looked at you, you couldn't wait to finally go home. Was he that unlikeable? He frowns as he feels your hands leave his, watching you turn to face him now.
"Give me your handphone" you held out your hand.
Minho complies as he hands over his phone, carefully watching you go through his apps and immediately typing.
"Check it later" you smirked before folding your arms in front of you, somewhat expecting to be dismissed.
"Wait Y/N, how do I contact you?"
You motion towards his phone as you slowly retreat away from Minho, who looked more than confused and a little bit heartbroken.
As you rush towards the taxi, thanking the driver for waiting, you turn around once more to see that Minho had not moved but was waving his hand weakly.
"Bye oppa! Check your phone!" you called out for the final time before hopping into the taxi and driving off.
Minho waited outside until the taxi was out of sight before walking into the hotel and plopping down on one of the lounge chairs in the lobby. He checks his phone, remembering your words. Checking the recent apps, Notes was the last one opened and without hesitation, he copies all of it and translates it.
Oppa, I don't know if you will check this right away, but if you still remember me, my handle is @_____. This is better than my number. Hopefully I hear from you. Thank you for tonight. Coffee is on me next time okay? If you remember to text me, tell me if you think your wishes at the Trevi fountain will come though xx
Your phone vibrates in your lap with a notification. A smile crosses your lips as you inspect it to see a message request from Choi Minho.
I think it will. Because you'll be my reason to come back to Rome. Good night and sweet dreams. xx
