The preceding day, the crows came. First two, then six, then sixteen, until a sizable flock of them had weighed down the branches in the trees that bordered the Roanwilde grounds. Irascible and full of bravado, they made ungainly landings into the gardens and perched on the stable roof, cawing throatily at the servants and stable hands and spreading their wings in dominant displays. They grew so raucous that old Tom took his gun out and cracked two loud rapports across the lawn, sending them scattering for a time. They retreated to the peripheries of the woods, huddling together like a vast, brooding shadow. The night swallowed the sight and sound of them, but everyone knew they were still there.
The next morning, they found the deer. It was the time of year for them–they grazed the remnants of the farmer’s fields and the wild grasses that had finally begun to go to seed, and Roanwilde’s grounds and meadows were a favored place of safety. No hunter dared poach on the Saville property. The cool mist of morning lifted from the fields to reveal the grisly scene of a buck in his prime, laid low by some bloody and violent death. Its twisted corpse had to be hooked around the hind legs by rope and dragged out, leaving only a dark stain of black blood in the dry grass as the crows rasped and flocked in the distance. A wolf, it was decided. They were not unknown in the Heartwoods.
That night, there was no moon.

MYTHOLOGY MEME - [1/3] Places → The Underworld
The Greek underworld, called Hades after the god who ruled it, was a place where souls went after death and was the Greek idea of afterlife. At the moment of death the soul was separated from the corpse, taking on the shape of the former person, and was transported to the entrance of Hades. Hades itself was described as being either at the outer bounds of the ocean or beneath the depths or ends of the earth. It was considered the dark counterpart to the brightness of Mount Olympus, and was the kingdom of the dead that corresponded to the kingdom of the gods. Hades was a realm invisible to the living and it was made solely for the dead. [x]
