Okay! I’ve been holding back for a while off this but I have finally done a Matz Tarot Reading
And it is everything I suspected it would be😅…..

*I am not an experienced tarot reader. I’ve only been reading for 3 months so there could be underlying meanings that I don’t catch. You are free to add any other interpretations for the cards as long as it doesn’t discredit mine.

*Any matz shippers reading this please be nice to me and also take everything with a grain of salt. Cuz idk how much matz being real is accepted amongst y’all I don’t want to rile anyone up. My cards told me it’s pretty complicated so make of that what you will.

So after my first woosan reading I intended to do a matz one eventually but I got caught up in other readings and life in general. If you don’t mind woosan, you can scroll a little bit on my page to see the readings I’ve done on them. I will be referencing them later on here because I think it provides some context to things contributing to matz’s actions (or lack thereof).
I’d also like to say while I do enjoy Seonghwa and Hongjoong’s dynamic, I don’t follow them intensely. I don’t follow matz accs, I don’t know their entire timeline apart from key moments over the years. I just like some fanart and read fics about them every now and then. So I really entered this reading with a neutral mindset and mostly wasn’t expecting a romantic undertone to it.
How does Hongjoong view Seonghwa: Seven of Swords rev, Three of Swords, Queen of Wands, Seven of Coins, Knight of Swords
First two cards popped out and I was like woah….um…did I come across something I shouldn’t have? The queen of wands does affirm that he deeply respects and admires Seonghwa. But maybe they recently had a fight or something, I don’t know but it seems like Seonghwa was keeping something from Hongjoong and he found out so now he’s hurt. Probably confronted Seonghwa about it and with this knight of swords, sharp words might’ve been exchanged. And now he’s reflecting on their friendship as a whole. Don’t worry I ask for more clarification on these cards later cuz I was caught off guard fr.
How does Seonghwa view Hongjoong: Ace of Swords, Two of Wands, Three of Coins, Strength, Four of Cups
Seonghwa also deeply respects Hongjoong of course. He sees him as a pillar of strength and a great leader, he can turn to Hongjoong for collaborations and ideas. They have a secure connection but Seonghwa still feels like it’s kinda one-sided. Or he keeps thinking about the potential of what their relationship can be that he’s dissatisfied with where things are. I noticed this in the June reading with him, picturing what something could be appears to be a key part of him. But that mindset is a double-edged sword especially in a situation that involves another person who thinks differently.
These cards surprised me a little cuz I thought we were past this at least since 2024. It seemed they had gotten closer and maybe they have but it’s just not close enough.
What is the reality of this friendship: The Hanged Man rev, Six of Swords, Knight of Wands, Two of Cups, The World
I think they both have realized this state of limbo cannot continue forever. Something has to be done about it and it seems Seonghwa’s response has been to create some space (matz shippers don’t attack me please😭). Now this knight of wands and two of cups to me feels like there are more-than-platonic feelings going on here. Idek if I can call it a situationship because that would require crossing the more-than-friends barrier. I mean knight of wands can point to hooking up but with the amount of repression in this entire reading I wouldn’t be surprised if they haven’t kissed yet. The World is the final card of the major Arcana, it is the end or completion of a chapter. Their bond has to go through this necessary change and what will become of it? I don’t know.
Does Hongjoong have feelings for Seonghwa: Knight of Swords, Three of Cups horizontal, The Star horizontal, Page of Cups rev
He does and he is suppressing it. The line of ‘friend’ does blur around Seonghwa, he’s stuck in this liminal space and keeps hesitating so his hope is stalled. Hongjoong is overthinking all the ways it can go wrong or what being in a relationship will mean within the group. So he’s trying to remain strictly in the friend zone. His emotions are confusing to him and he doesn’t want to face them head-on. So I guess he’s like “there’s no point taking such a risk for something I’m not even totally sure is there nor understand nor would be ready for.”
Does Seonghwa have feelings for Hongjoong: Eight of Wands rev, Eight of Coins, Page of Coins, Ace of Coins
He’s holding back his feelings too but he’s less confused as Hongjoong. He has blocked his impulses and has tried to view them in a very practical manner. Like I said before, he does see the potential here and has been dedicated to creating a strong connection. With all these Coins cards + the slowing down energy of an eight of wands rev, I think Seonghwa has liked Hongjoong for a long time and genuinely wants a future with him.
Alright so I had to ask wtf Hongjoong’s cards in my first question meant so I can get a clearer picture as to what the true problem is.
Why does Hongjoong feel hurt by Seonghwa: High Priestess, Knight of Cups horizontal, Nine of Coins rev, Queen of Wands
He thinks Seonghwa has emotional withdrew from him. Going back to that seven of swords reverse with the high priestess, Seonghwa is withholding stuff from him and isn’t talking to him as openly as before. That Seonghwa is acting standoffish and isn’t as passionate around him like he used to. Maybe Seonghwa is prioritizing himself and his independence now over their friendship so Hongjoong is left confused and left in the dark. He’s wondering if he ended up expecting more emotionally out of their friendship than what Seonghwa really feels.
So of course my nosy ass had to get Seonghwa’s side of things.
Why is Seonghwa emotionally withdrawing from Hongjoong: Knight of Coins, Six of Coins, The Chariot rev, The Hanged Man rev
The hanged man in reverse again bro Seonghwa is tired. He feels that he has invested so much into this connection only for it to not go where he wants it. He is frustrated of them being in this state of suspension so he’s stepping away to protect his heart. The knight of coins here again with all this coins energy with Seonghwa, he’s looking at everything realistically. He doesn’t want to act impulsively on his emotions/feelings especially since he feels that Hongjoong isn’t where he is. So emotionally withdrawing is the only path he sees to regain control of himself.
The situation at hand: Seonghwa wants change. Hongjoong doesn’t want change, he’s afraid of it. Seonghwa realizes Hongjoong won’t be on the same wavelength as him so he proceeds to back away. Hongjoong doesn’t know why Seonghwa backed away so now he’s questioning everything. Seonghwa did it because he’s losing hope on Hongjoong ever loving him back and doing something about it. Hongjoong doesn’t know Seonghwa loves him.
So essentially your average matz fic on ao3.
I mean honestly out of all the readings I’ve done this is the most fanfiction shit I’ve ever seen. Now okay, it’s easy to wanna shake Hongjoong by the shoulders and tell him to get his fucking shit together but there’s two important things:
1. We need to keep in the mind the circumstances they are in. This is not a college au or a regular ol’ friend group. They are famous idols from a conservative country working in a very heteronormative industry under a company who won’t necessarily like it if they did start dating. And this is where my woosan readings come in where, according to my tarot deck, they have been in a relationship for a long time. And have been in an uphill conflict with a cold, detached authority figure in KQ for at least a month. Not to mention just keeping the relationship a secret till you retire at best. All of that hiding and pretending is exhausting.
Every time I read them I get an eight of swords or a nine of wands or seven of wands or a ten of wands. When I tell you Wooyoung is fighting battles we do not see. But I don’t wanna delve into it too much here, the point is not many relationships can endure all that. Woosan can because they’re built different and it’s meant to be that way. Matz are in the same group and see everything woosan have to go through. That is absolutely influencing their decisions on whether to move forward or process their own feelings. So I cannot look at my readings on woosan then sit here with a clear conscience to say that Hongjoong and Seonghwa’s hesitance isn’t completely understandable.
2. If they pursued a relationship, that is half of ateez dating each other. That’s objectively crazy. I mean my cards basically saying half of them are queer is wild enough and each of them are in a different stage with being comfortable in their identity. When I asked for Seonghwa I got 4 of cups, the magician rev, the moon rev, the world rev. He is still repressing himself and finds it all overwhelming but with the moon reverse he is gradually confronting it. Seonghwa hasn’t fully reached that point of self-acceptance meanwhile with Hongjoong’s cards being the magician, judgement, knight of cups, 2 of wands, he mostly has. He’s just navigating how to express it openly but he’s pretty assured with who he is and he’s okay with it. So Seonghwa hasn’t done enough internal work to be at a level of confidence where he says fuck it and confesses anyway. And Hongjoong hasn’t achieved enough emotional maturity to notice Seonghwa’s feelings.
So my advice looking at all of this: I think Seonghwa stepping back was overall the right call. I mean these two need to communicate already and Seonghwa needs to let Hongjoong know that it was never to hurt him. But they both need more personal development and clarity on themselves. That’s not going to happen with the current state of their dynamic.
