i think there'd be alot less discourse around "fanfic vs literature" if more people treated fanfiction as it's own medium with it's own strength and weaknesses, rather than comparing it to traditional literature, because most of what i love about fan-fiction just straight up does not work in original fiction. at all.

Hey, remember that time Diana Gabaldon (author of the Outlander series) claimed fanfiction is illegal?
It made me so mad and upset at the time that it turned me off her series altogether.
For the record:
Fanfiction is actually a legally protected art form that's as old as fiction itself.
The way it works is that writers take aspects of a story or universe and then tweak it to explore how those changes would affect the plot and/or characters.
This process of storytelling is so common and so old that it's basically how fairytales survive for thousands of years; the versions you know are basically fanfics of older versions.

The irony of this new breed of self-righteous AI hunters on AO3 is that they're all just copy and pasting peoples fics into AI detectors, which are all operated by AI and therefore THEY are feeding people's work into the algorithm without their consent and in some cases no doubt circumventing the locks people put on to avoid getting scraped...
Don't copy and paste anyone's AO3 work into third party websites, you're not the good guys in this situation?
