Summary: "Son, we need to talk. You have a younger brother. Full brother, I don't mean Adam. He's coming home to live with us. You'll need to go to town and bring them home."
If only John were just a smidge more communicative...
The coach pulled up, and Dean waited as patiently as he could. This was going to be one of the most important moments of his life. When his father told him that his brother was coming home, Dean was shocked. For starters, while he vaguely remembered having a little brother when he was small, he’d never been told what happened to his brother after the fire. He had eventually decided that his brother died and nobody had wanted to try to explain that to a small child already dealing with losing his mother and being sent to live with an aunt and uncle instead of a stepmother.
His brother – he couldn’t even remember the name for sure; Sammy kept coming to mind but he’d also had an imaginary friend he called Sammy when he was small – should be somewhere around twenty-one. That could explain the timing; now that he was of age, he was free to do what he liked instead of what whoever ended up as his guardian told him to do. Another explanation was that he was coming home to join the family business, having finished whatever education he was provided.
There were several passengers disembarking; most of them Dean disregarded. There was a family and his half-brother, who was bringing a couple of friends home from school. Normally, he’d have at least greeted Adam; today was different because of the friends and being here to meet his brother. Adam was not excited at all about the new brother; he and Dean already barely got along.
The last passenger to step off was a young man traveling alone with several bags. He looked around, as if looking for someone to meet him. Although the man didn’t look at all like him or his father or his fuzzy memories of his mother – he was certain he’d have remembered if she had eyes that blue – there were no other passengers on this coach. “Are you looking for Winchester?”
The look on the man’s face was a delight. “I am. It’s good to meet you in person, Mr. Winchester.”
“Great!” Since finding out about his brother, Dean had spent most of his free time imagining this moment. Would he recognize his brother? There was no way his brother would remember him. Would they have things to talk about and fall into an easy friendship, or would it be awkward and stilted and worse than meeting a stranger? The one thing he’d never imagined was finding his brother attractive. All the speeches, all the questions, nothing felt right to say next. Eventually, he found his way to, “Call me Dean.”
The man shot a strange glance at him, but didn’t say anything as Dean led him to the carriage. Once everything was loaded, the silence felt even stranger. Eventually, Dean couldn’t take it anymore. “Did you have a pleasant trip?”
“Not really.” For a moment, Dean was afraid that the silence would come back, but then he spoke again. “It was made somewhat more pleasant by the thought of what might be waiting at the end of it. The employment is far better than what my uncle had planned for me, and I am very glad to be out of the city.”
“What did your uncle want you to do?” Who was this uncle Dean hadn’t heard of? If he was close enough to take in John’s son, why hadn’t he taken Dean? Aunt Ellen and Uncle Bill hadn’t taken him because John had already given him to a different relative, Ellen had explained when Dean asked her after learning about his brother. Why had John separated them? Questions for his dad, if he could ever get the notoriously closed-mouthed man to answer a damn thing for once in his life.
“I’m not certain, but I never really fit in with his family. I was the charity case who killed his mother, you know. He would have found a position that wouldn’t shame the family, but it would never have been anything like what your father is offering.”
“You shouldn’t have been treated like a charity case,” Dean said with a frown. The wording struck him as odd, but then, Aunt Ellen had always made sure that not only did Dean know who his father was, he knew the man himself. If his brother hadn’t had that, meeting John wouldn’t be any less weird than meeting Dean. “I never was.”
“I’m aware of my uncle’s deficiencies of human decency and kindness, believe me,” he said with a grim smile. “It’s why I was so grateful to receive this invitation upon finishing school. What do you do?”
“Dad put me in charge of managing the Campbell inheritance. Mom’s land,” he added as he realized that his brother might not even know their mother’s name. “Dad hasn’t told me much about you. What should I call you?”
“Castiel.” Dean stared blankly. How had he ever forgotten that name? Where had his parents even come up with it? “Yes, I know. It’s odd. My grandfather has a policy where he will pay any boarding school or university fees for any of his descendants, provided they are named for an angel.”
“I… see.” So the question of his brother’s name was back. Had their uncle changed his name so he could be covered under this grandfather’s policy? Would John encourage him to change it back now? “Did you enjoy boarding school?” Dean had enjoyed it, even though it was a struggle.
Castiel’s stories about boarding school and university lasted the rest of the drive to the estate, and Dean was glad to see it. The more he talked, the worse Dean’s attraction got. This was going to be really awkward.
John was, as usual, in his library. “Dad, I’ve got Castiel here.”
“Castiel?” John looked up, frown relaxing as he looked over Castiel. “Ah. Yes. Castiel. I’m sorry, my mind was somewhere else entirely. I hope your journey wasn’t too terrible.”
“The weather favored us, and the horses were swift. Thank you.”
“Dean, thank you for bringing him. Your Aunt Ellen and cousin Jo arrived earlier; I know you’ll want to see them as soon as possible.” Dean took the hint and left the room, trying not to be too disappointed. Shouldn’t he be included in the family reunion or discussion of the family business?
John kept Castiel busy all day, seeing to getting him settled in personally. Dean was expected to handle the business that came up, and there was enough of it that Dean didn’t get the chance to talk to Castiel again before bedtime. First thing in the morning, John was waiting for him. “Son, you need to take the carriage back into town. We’re expecting someone.”
“And when do I get to spend any time at all with Castiel?” Dean grumbled, but he was already turning to go. He saw John raise an eyebrow, but as his father didn’t say anything, he decided not to push his luck. John left without another word, and only as he was heading into town did Dean realize he didn’t know anything other than “another passenger.” For all he knew, he was supposed to be picking up Adam and his friends after they spent the night in town. He hadn’t heard Adam come in.
He got there just as the stagecoach was pulling in. His eyes were drawn immediately to the very tall young man who stepped off behind an old woman and the three young women – probably her daughters. He was quite noticeable, with his hair worn wild and somewhat longer than fashions in the area. John was going to hate it. This man was followed by two others, who immediately took off together, so this was likely the man he was looking for.
Up close, Dean could see his eyes, and his greeting died in his throat. So many colors to analyze! Plus, this one wasn’t his brother. The reminder of the brother waiting at home got Dean’s mouth working again. He cleared his throat. “Are you looking for Winchester?”
“I am.” He looked Dean over closely. “You can’t be John Winchester, so you must be his son Dean? Forgive me, but I assume you take after your mother?”
“That’s what everyone says,” Dean agreed. “Come on, let’s get to where fewer people are staring at us. We can talk on the road.”
Transferring the luggage to the carriage went quickly. As soon as they were out on the road, the stranger was back to staring at Dean. “I’m so nervous. Uncle Bobby prepared me as well as he could for this, but he neglected to tell me… but then, I suppose he wouldn’t have known, you can’t have been more than four the last time he saw you. I’m so… is Castiel here? I know we were trying to arrange our travel so we’d arrive close to the same day. I ran into some bad roads after bad weather…”
“You know Castiel?” So that’s who this guy was. A friend of his brother’s. A bit of a surprise that Castiel hadn’t mentioned bringing a friend from school with him, but then, clearly John knew about this. “He arrived yesterday. Dad promptly monopolized him.”
“Well, that’s hardly fair.” He pouted, and it was adorable. “I still haven’t met him in person. My friend Jess from school had a friend at Castiel’s school, and they encouraged us to start writing to each other. At first, it was just a way to practice penmanship and letter writing, since neither of us had much family. Well, Castiel had quite a large family, but not one that he cared to write to. I just had Uncle Bobby. Over time, we started pouring out our hearts to each other, and by the time we were ready to leave the university, he knew he would rather go with me than back to his family.”
The horrible uncle, Dean reminded himself. This was not his brother rejecting him, this was a rejection of the horrible uncle. He was also quite curious on whether he was reading too much into it or if his brother had a male lover. Did John know about this? It was also quite disappointing – two of the most beautiful men he’d ever met, and one turned out to be his brother and the other his brother’s lover. “Well, Dad is probably going to monopolize you today. No idea if he’ll include Castiel or not, but even if he does, you’ll be busy.”
“That’s okay. As long as he keeps his word, I don’t imagine we’ll have much problem, and according to Uncle Bobby, that’s one thing you can count on with John Winchester. He doesn’t give his word lightly, but when he does, he means it.”
“Yeah, that’s about right. Keeps his word about what, if you don’t mind me asking?”
His passenger chewed his lip, staring hard at Dean. He was just about to make a comment about that lip deserving much better treatment when he said, “Castiel and I are extremely close. He gave his word that we would not be forced into some respectable marriage or to live apart. If being together spoils the relationship, that’s one thing, but he gave his word that we would be allowed to try.”
So they were in love. Interesting, if somewhat disappointing. “I’m glad to hear that,” he only sort of lied easily. “So tell me about school.” As with Castiel, the topic was broad enough to last until they got to the estate.
John and Castiel were at the door to meet them, instead of Dean having to take his passenger to the library. “Welcome home,” John said. “Please, come with me to the library. Castiel, Dean, come along, please.”
Dean followed eagerly. Finally, some answers. Once they were settled, John cleared his throat. “Let me reiterate my promise, Sam. You and Castiel are welcome to be together, and while I do hope you’ll be discreet in front of strangers, how you boys conduct your affair is your business. The story around the estate is that my son brought his close friend with him from school because there was enough work here for three men and his own family was unlikely to provide nearly as good an opportunity. Dean, it’s my hope that you and your brother and his partner will grow close and continue to work together. When Adam comes of age…”
“We’ll include him, Father,” Sam said.
Dean got to his feet. “Wait. What?”
Sam stared at him. “He is our brother, Dean. Admittedly, I haven’t met him, but…”
“No, not that,” Dean said. “Of course I’m including Adam as part of the family. Go back to where you’re the one who’s my brother and not Castiel.”
Sam grinned. “Oh, that explains a lot. I assume you got here yesterday, Castiel?” After confirmation, Sam continued, “I was supposed to be here yesterday, too, but there was a huge storm on the second day of the trip, and the mud made for extremely slow going. I can see where you’d have made assumptions…” He turned back to Castiel. “Although not why you would play along with him thinking you were me.”
“He never specified that he thought I was you,” Castiel said quietly. “John kept me quite busy yesterday, planning the house he intends to build for the two of us and going over the estate accounts with me.”
“I didn’t want your brother developing an interest in your man,” John explained without Sam’s prompting. “He’s a good man, he would feel horrible when he discovered the truth.”
“Well. Dean, I’m your brother. My name is Sam. I’m guessing you forgot since you were four when we were separated?” Dean nodded wordlessly. “Father, Uncle Bobby never would give me an answer other than to ask you when the time came. He was willing to take Dean, too, so why did you separate us?”
John looked between his boys. “This doesn’t leave this room, understand?”
“Yes, sir,” Dean said immediately. Sam nodded.
“You too, Castiel. You need to hear this, but it cannot reach any other ears.”
“I will not speak or write of this to anyone who is not presently in this room,” Castiel promised.
“The night Mary died, she showed me an old family journal. A great-great-grandmother had written down her dreams, and many of them came true over the years. Mary had consulted the journal and realized that one of the dreams was coming due – the one where she died in a fire. There was only one other dream left to come true, and the dream included the names Sam and Dean. I’ll admit I was skeptical, who wouldn’t be, but…”
John’s voice choked up, and Dean couldn’t blame him. He’d never talked this much about Mary to Dean. Everything he knew about Mary came from Aunt Ellen or Uncle Bill. John cleared his throat and continued, “The night of the fire, Mary gave me the journal and made me promise that I would still love you boys and support you, no matter what. I’ve read the remaining dream. The two of you, along with a third man – I assume you, Castiel – were facing down a man threatening to expose you two as lovers.”
Sam and Dean exchanged looks. Dean could not speak. He had so many questions right now. Castiel, thankfully, recovered quickly. “I find myself questioning your wisdom, in that case. Separating them would make it more likely, not less likely, since you were planning to bring Sam home after he finished his education.”
John grimaced. “I’ll admit, at first, I had no such intention. It wasn’t personal, Sam. You wouldn’t remember me. Dean would. It was easier to think of giving you up. If Bobby had changed your name like I told him to and raised you as Sam Singer or Sam Campbell, I could have brought you home and just hope no one thought anything of Dean taking on an assistant who happened to share a name and an age with his deceased little brother. Bobby convinced me to wait a year, and by then, I’d thought better of it.”
“Okay, but… why?” Sam asked. “Why bring me back at all?”
“Because…” John shook his head. “Your mother believed that those dreams were happening for a reason. I don’t know what it was, but she told me that even her death would lead to something important and wonderful.”
“So hold on one second,” Dean said. “You know that I’m going to be involved with my brother, but you did everything you could to prevent me from developing an interest in his lover?”
“I don’t know what’s going to happen with Castiel,” John said. “I’m not certain that he’s the third man in the dream. For all I know, he and Sam might decide that being together was much better in letters than it is in person. If he is, if he stays, then it was clear he knew about the two of you. Whatever you figure out between the three of you, that’s your decision, but I didn’t want things starting off on the wrong foot.” He cleared his throat. “And now, I’m going to go handle some business and let the three of you get to know each other.”
Once John was gone, Castiel reached out to Sam. “The dreams you’ve been recording. Do you think you may have inherited your ancestress’s powers?”
“It’s possible,” Sam said hoarsely. “In which case, I think I know who was threatening us.” He looked to Dean. “There’s a man. In my dreams, he’s called Azazel, but he seems determined to get hold of a Winchester. At first, I kept a record just because those dreams were intensely vivid, but then I had a dream come true. My friend Jess, who I mentioned is the one who got me writing to Castiel, died last November. I dreamt it the night before, and tried to convince him to be anywhere but his dorm on the night of his death, but I couldn’t. He burned in a fire. Like our mother.”
Dean shivered. “Any idea how to stop him?”
“None. I do know that we can expect to meet him in person – the three of us – at some point. That’s all I saw in that dream, but I heard our names. That’s what convinced me to copy out my journal to include in my letters to Castiel, and when we started truly getting close.” He forced a deep breath. “It’s all leading to something, but I don’t have enough puzzle pieces to know what.”
“Well, we’ll figure it out. Together. Somehow.” Dean looked between Sam and Castiel. “Along with a bunch of other things, apparently.”

Word Count: 825
Summary: Pamela keeps flirting with the guy who buys her rejected or unsold flowers, and the petals that drop. He keeps not noticing… until the day he does.
“You know, hot stuff, one of these days you’ve really gotta tell me what you do with these. You don’t strike me as a potpourri guy,” Pamela teased as she handed over the box of old flowers and fallen petals. “I’m psychic, you know. It’s necessary for your long-term happiness to share your secret with me.”
They did this every week. Every week, Castiel would respond with something about it not mattering, that it wasn’t Pamela’s business, and all she should care about was that the money provided was the correct amount for the waste products he was purchasing. This time, though, he didn’t answer for so long Pamela started to wonder if he hadn’t heard her, somehow. “My friends say that you’re flirting with me. Are they correct?”
“They are,” Pamela confirmed with a small laugh. She thought she’d been perfectly obvious about that, but who knows, maybe Castiel was bad with signals or something. “And before you ask, no, it’s not just customer service flirting, it’s real. You’re an interesting guy, Castiel, and I would very much like to know what you do with the flowers and byproducts you take off my hands.”
“Very well. Since your interest is genuine, I would be happy to show you – although I’m uncertain how much you’ll be able to appreciate it.” Pamela raised her eyebrow. “I create visual art, and incorporate the flower petals in a way where the scent doesn’t come through. I find it unlikely that you would be able to differentiate between pieces.”
Pamela laughed again. “Thank you for being straightforward about it. You’re probably right, I’m completely blind. Doesn’t mean I’m not interested in hearing you explain what you can!”
“As you wish. When are you available?”
Pamela thought it over. “Market ends in an hour, if today’s not too soon; otherwise any day this week after the store closes at 7. When’s good for you?”
“Today will be fine. If you’re comfortable accepting a ride from me, I can pick you up at the end of the market; if not, I can give you the address.”
Pamela beamed, considering her options. “I wasn’t joking about being psychic. I know you’re a good guy who won’t hurt me or take advantage of me. I’m fine with a ride from you.”
Castiel had been absolutely right about Pamela not being able to properly appreciate his art. She could, to some extent, tell when there was light on her face – more from the attendant heat than anything else, but she did have some very minimal photosensitivity. She could not tell the difference between Castiel holding up a plain glass circle and one that had his artwork.
She could still listen to him describe the process – first, the full flowers were stripped down to petals. Each petal was then inspected, trimmed if necessary, and then sorted by color. The petals were then arranged onto a plastic film, which was in turn carefully layered between two pieces of glass and trimmed. Applied heat would melt the film, causing the pieces of glass to adhere. Once the glass was cool, it could be hung in the sunlight where the petals would act as a form of stained glass, creating color effects. “It sounds delightful, and you have so much passion for it. And just like I can’t really get the full effects of Rufus’s flowers, I can sense the hard work and love he puts into everything – and I can feel it in your work, too.”
“Thank you.” Castiel hesitated, and then pressed a glass circle into her hand. “Then I would like you to have this one. I was thinking of you when I made it.”
Pamela felt the weight of the glass, letting its energy flow into her hand. She smirked as she felt the longing and desire in it. “Wow. You really do like me. I can go ahead and plan on that second date happening.”
“Yes. And now, I believe it’s traditional for a date to include food. My talents do not carry into a kitchen, I’m afraid, but I would be happy to take you to a restaurant or order some food for us. What would you like?”
After a moment’s thought, Pamela decided it was a bit soon to express a desire for sausage. Maybe for an after-dinner snack. “Benny’s has the best gumbo I’ve had since I left Louisiana. That work for you?”
“Dean keeps telling me I should try the fish tacos,” Castiel mused. “Perhaps this would be a good time.”
It took Pamela a beat to decide how to respond to that, mostly while she tried to figure out if Dean was messing with Castiel or just a really big fan of Tex-Mex seafood. Knowing Dean, it could go either way, although she was leaning more toward messing with him. And hey, even if both Dean and Castiel did just mean the food… she could be patient. “Perfect.”

“You sure about this, Sammy?” Dean adjusted his brother’s cape, fiddling with the brooch until he had everything lined up just perfectly. “I know the church says you kinda have to marry the guy, but it’s only been six months.”
Sam tucked his hands into his armpits to keep from messing with his hair. “Bit late to back out now, don’t you think? It’s not like there’s much to decide. Marrying an angel doesn’t bring us a formal alliance with Heaven, but it does give us the appearance of Heaven’s favor which will have other countries thinking twice about messing with us. Castiel himself has agreed to be one of the weapons in our arsenal, to be deployed at the king’s pleasure. Castiel is my soulmate, and to the best of my knowledge, takes that very seriously and intends to support me in my goals. What is there to be unsure about?”
“You know the stories as well as I do, where soulmates turned out to drag each other to Hell.” Dean’s lips quirked into a lopsided smile. “Admittedly, doesn’t seem like much of a risk when one’s a literal angel, but you never know. Maybe it turns out Heaven’s actually worse than Hell because at least Hell is honest about being a bunch of winged dickmonkeys and Heaven rationalizes everything as being just because it’s in the name of God.”
“Like the Church that I’m taking on?” Sam pointed out. “With Castiel’s help, advice, and personal blessing if not necessarily conveying God’s?”
“Yeah, I know.” Dean stepped back. “Still. You’re sure about this.”
“I’m sure.” A bell rang and Sam closed his eyes briefly. “And even if I’m not, that’s the bell. Time for my big entrance.”
Dean took up the sword handed by the page, holding it in front of him as he walked down the aisle at the court. Sam followed, heavy crown making it difficult to keep his head up, but he managed. A page stepped forward and helped him to manage the robes and cape as he sat on the throne at the front of the dais.
Two heralds took up horns, blowing a fanfare that announced the arrival of the officiating priest. Unfortunately, it was Zachariah; even the king couldn’t do anything about that. Zachariah hesitated just long enough to be rude without being insulting enough to call out before speaking the ritual greeting. “Your Majesty. I answer the summons to provide the earthly binding of you and your heavenly-bound mate.”
“Prepare the altar. When you are ready, Castiel will be brought forth.” Zachariah turned to obey.
As soon as the altar was prepared – mostly by Zachariah’s attendants, but with the high priest’s supervision – there was a golden light that flooded the room. Sam put his hand up to shield his eyes, looking at the audience until he found his court mage. Rowena’s startled look seemed genuine enough that he dismissed the idea that she had somehow faked the soulbond between him and Castiel; this wasn’t God himself interrupting the wedding to complain. As the golden light faded, tiny sparkles drifting down slowly over the assembled audience, Sam had to work quickly to regain control of his face. “Thanks, Zachariah, but I’s best friend Balthazar. He walked down the steps, hands extended to Castiel.
Zachariah glared, but to Sam’s delight, he didn’t find any kind of protest he could put up. The heralds raised their trumpets, sounding another fanfare. Sam rose to his feet as Castiel walked in, escorted by an angel Sam recognized as Castiel’s best friend Balthazar. He walked down the steps, hands extended to Castiel.
Balthazar looked Sam over. “By what claim do you take this angel from me?”
“By the will of God, by the power of the throne of Besatthet, by the sworn word of Castiel himself,” Sam responded as calmly as he could. “Castiel is my soulmate. The King of Besatthet has declared him my intended mate. Castiel has sworn his willing acceptance to the marriage.”
“Then he is yours.” Balthazar placed Castiel’s hands in Sam’s and stepped back, where a courtier escorted him to the reserved seat in the front row.
Sam escorted Castiel to the altar, where the two of them knelt. With Zachariah, Sam had known what to expect; how much of that Gabriel would hold to was hard to say. It started out well, with Gabriel reading from the holy book, and then giving a sermon on the importance of marriage, soulmates, and partnership in general – with a pointed aside about double-crossing partners being bad and another about the precarious state of the partnership between Heaven and its so-called representatives on Earth. He wound up by walking Sam and Castiel through the traditional vows, to which each answered “I do” as prompted.
For the more freeform vows, Castiel rose to stand over Sam. “I am your weapon, your armor, your shield. I am your blanket and your pillow. I am your guardian and your servant. I pledge with all I am to be your support and your comfort, your voice of wisdom and your moral compass. I am yours.” He returned to kneel by Sam’s side, hands outstretched. Sam took those hands briefly.
Then he let go and rose to make his own vow. “I don’t claim to know why you were chosen for me, but I know that you are mine for a reason. I pledge to stand by your side, to be your rock as you find your place in our world. I am yours.”
When Sam returned to his place holding hands with Castiel, Gabriel cleared his throat. “Any objections, anybody?”
“Yes.” Sam closed his eyes and reminded himself that this was all part of the plan. “I object.”
“And what is the basis of your objection?” Gabriel asked, sounding a little surprised.
“Succession.” Dean looked between Castiel and Sam. “We need a stable succession, and while Castiel’s not exactly what he appears to be, nephilim aren’t the answer, either. This is a human kingdom. It’s meant to be ruled by a human.”
Sam and Castiel both got to their feet. Sam turned to address the crowd. “My brother’s objection is fair. He is right that we need a human to be next in line to the throne. After much study, prayer, and consultation, I have an answer. There is a position specifically for situations where the sovereign and their soulmate happen to be unable to produce children naturally. In our case, a woman who agrees to bear my children. I have asked Lady Eileen Leahy to accept this position, and she has agreed.” A page stepped forward, uncovering the throne slightly behind and to the left of Sam’s on the dais. Lady Eileen was already in place, looking absolutely beautiful in her wedding finery.
“Objection withdrawn, your holiness,” Dean said, bowing and returning to his seat.
“Then by the power granted to me as an archangel of the Lord, I declare these two married. Seal your vows with a kiss, boys.” And they did, the red string that had brought them together flashing gold for all to see.

Summary: Jack was a highly unusual Angel, and they're figuring out the best they can do for him.
Sequel-esque to The Reporter and the Angel.
Brief notes if you haven't read that one: Angels are a superhero group protecting the world. An Angel has two identities: their Angel form and their human form. While the two obviously share a body, their personalities and attachments can be wildly different.
Gadreel is Sam's Angel form.
Castiel is Jimmy's Angel form. Castiel and Sam are in a relationship, but Gadreel and Jimmy do not have those feelings.
Rachel is Claire's Angel form. Claire was Jimmy's daughter from before he became an Angel that he didn't know about.
For safekeeping and to establish a human identity, Jack has been adopted by Sam Winchester, because Sam comes and goes from the Angels all the time in his capacity as official staff reporter for the Angels.
The crying was unusual, to say the least. A child’s tears were almost never heard in this part of the compound. Rachel gently brushed off the kid’s wings. “You’re okay, Jack. You did really well, until you got distracted. Can you tell me what distracted you?”
“Him.” Jack pointed to Gadreel, who had entered the training area while Jack was supposed to be flying a lap. “Not-Daddy.”
“All right. Are you hurt?”
Jack took a minute to sniffle while he thought it over. Then he shook his head. “I’m ready to try again if you are.”
“Sounds good. Now, remember, you need to focus on your wings while you’re flying. If someone comes in, even if it’s Castiel or Michael or Gadreel or Sam, they don’t want to interrupt your training. If they do need to interrupt your training, they know to come through me first. You just fly. Okay?”
“Okay!” Jack got to his feet. “Wait. Can I go say hello to Not-Daddy first?”
Rachel swallowed hard. “Jack, Gadreel isn’t your father. While he likes you well enough, he doesn’t think of you as a son. If he came in here, it’s to do his own training. You should let him focus so that he can finish what he needs to do and be your daddy again.”
“But I never get to talk to Not-Daddy,” Jack pouted. “Please?”
“No, Jack. He’s focused, and you need to be too.” Rachel put her hands under his arms. “On three. Ready?” Jack’s muscles tensed up. “One… two… three!” She tossed Jack into the air, and his wings spread as he aimed himself toward the thermal vent.
After Jack finished a lap, he came toward Rachel, who caught him and helped him land safely. “Much better! You did a good job up there, Jack!”
“Thank you! But I need to get better, don’t I?”
“There’s always room for improvement, but you can’t force it. According to the training plan, you’re doing better than Naomi expected from you at this point when it comes to flying. You’re doing very good at learning to turn and to use the thermals to help yourself get higher. Naomi’s plan has you staying on turning drills for the rest of the day, so we should do a few more of those, but if you do well we can do something fun at the end of your time, okay?”
“Okay.” Jack straightened his back and spread his wings, resettling them in position for takeoff. “I’m ready when you are!”
After a few more laps, Jack touched down. Rachel ruffled his hair. “All right. What…”
“Sorry to interrupt.” Rachel and Jack both turned to stare at Gadreel. “Rachel, I overheard you promise Jack a reward instead of having to stick with Naomi’s drills, if he did well. Did he perform satisfactorily?”
“He did,” Rachel confirmed. She tried not to let her hopes show. If she was wrong, she didn’t want Jack to be disappointed. “Do you have something in mind?”
“With your permission, I would like to take Jack for a short flight with me. Flying in formation is an advanced skill, one Jack might not be ready for, but I suspect he would enjoy trying.” He turned to Jack. “Castiel was supposed to join me for my drills, and he will, but he’s running a bit late because of a meeting with Michael. Would you like to join me until he can arrive?”
Jack squealed and turned to Rachel. “Can I? Please? I’d like that better than any other reward, even nougat!”
“You may. Be careful, if Gadreel tells you to do something then listen to him, and don’t get distracted when Castiel arrives.” Rachel smiled as Jack squealed and ran in place.
Gadreel helped Jack launch, and then took off himself. It was clear that he was challenging himself to match Jack’s flight, instead of trying to lead, which made more sense anyway. Castiel walked in while they were weaving through some rings. “Rachel?”
“It was Gadreel’s idea. I don’t know if it’s Gadreel honestly taking to the kid finally or Sam bleeding through, but it was Gadreel’s idea.”
“This explains why he texted me to ask me to be late, I suppose,” Castiel mused. “I have to admit to some concern… one of the things Bardiel mentioned might happen is that Jack would be able to warp reality. If he… it’s possible that somehow Jack is controlling Gadreel somehow.”
Rachel pursed her lips. “It’s possible, but he’s been concentrating so hard on his flying, I don’t think it’s likely. At least, not on purpose. If you’re worried, you can always ask Raphael to check them out, but…”
She trailed off as Gadreel touched down in front of her, reaching out his hands to catch Jack. Jack ran to Castiel for a hug. “Did you see me? Rachel says I’m getting good at turning, and Gadreel and I managed to go through the whole ring sequence together!”
“I did see you. Be sure to thank Gadreel for flying with you, Jack.”
“Oh, right!” Jack turned back to Gadreel. “Thank you for flying with me. I had a lot of fun.”
“You’re quite welcome. You’re getting very good.” Gadreel looked to Castiel as Rachel took Jack off. “Shall we?”
“Why did you fly with him?” Castiel asked. “Forgive the bluntness, but I have concerns.”
“If Jack did something to me, I’m not aware of it,” Gadreel promised with a smile. “He’s a good kid. Just because I don’t feel a paternal bond doesn’t mean he’s not a brother or nephew, and providing a special treat seemed like an appropriate way to bond with him without getting his hopes up that he should consider me a father.”

Castiel felt Daphne’s hand on his arm. “Good luck, Emmanuel. I hope this works out the way you want it to.”
“So do I. Thank you.” He kissed her forehead and closed his eyes, waiting for sleep to come. Most nights, it didn’t come easily. On nights when Daphne wasn’t there beside him, he might spend hours waiting for sleep to come. Sleep didn’t come naturally to him, despite his need for it being as great as any human if not greater.
When sleep finally did come for him, his eyes opened to the room. “Gabriel?”
“Cassie.” Gabriel reached for him with shaking hands, pulling him into a hug. “Missed you, little brother.”
“I’m just glad I made it back here. We know there’s always a risk.” He looked over his brother. Gabriel was in the same condition he had been the night before, with no signs of further torture or draining.
Several weeks ago, Castiel had not remembered who he really was or why he could do the things he could do. He had believed himself an amnesiac human who could work the occasional healing miracle. Then, one night, he felt something in a dream. He didn’t immediately recognize the man with the golden eyes staring at him in shock, but he knew it was someone who knew him. For the first few nights, the man – Gabriel – had explained to him that he was a fallen angel, and everything that meant.
Then the focus had shifted, and Gabriel explained where he was. He was a prisoner of the demon prince Asmodeus, and would need rescuing if he was going to have any hope of getting out. Asmodeus had been draining his grace, just enough to keep him at a level where there was no risk of burning him out but also no risk of him overpowering the magic binding him there.
Together, they had worked out a plan. The final step had happened earlier that week, with Castiel explaining everything to Daphne and asking her permission to bring Gabriel into their home to recover. Not only had his wife agreed instantly, she had spent the past few days preparing the guest room and telling people around town that Emmanuel had recently gotten in contact with a long-lost brother who was coming for a visit. She had explained that he’d gotten into something over his head when they were both young, and hadn’t seen each other in years, so they would appreciate being left alone.
“So explain the whole wife thing to me while we’re waiting on things to line up,” Gabriel said. “I get that you were without memories and she brought you home to help get well. Why’d you tell people you were married?”
“I needed a legal identity, and establishing myself as Daphne’s husband gave me a place and a name. It benefited Daphne as well, as she is sex-repulsed and has no desire for a more traditional marriage. There’s no pressure for children, since I gladly agreed to represent myself as infertile due to a childhood illness. She gets an easy explanation for why she’s not interested in marriage or motherhood, I got a home and an identity. Even now, remembering my own identity, I don’t plan to abandon her to return to my old life. I will tell Sam and Dean I’m alive and help them out when they ask, of course, but Daphne is my home now.”
“You sure Dean will go for that?” Gabriel asked, and Castiel flinched. “He can be a little… demanding.”
“A little, yes,” Castiel agreed. “However, we didn’t exactly part on the best of terms, after… he didn’t take my betrayal well. I don’t even know if he’ll care that I’m alive. Sam will, but if Dean holds to his opinion that we’re done, Sam will follow his lead.”
“I wouldn’t be so sure of that, kiddo.” Gabriel started to explain more, but the signal they had been waiting for – a flickering in the ropes – came then. Castiel used his blade to cut them and grab on tight, plunging a hand into Gabriel’s throat to connect to his grace. The archangel screamed, but the scream itself helped overpower the wards in the room. Castiel flew the two of them home.
Daphne, to her credit, only shrieked once, and apologized profusely immediately after. Gabriel waved her off. “There’s a strange man in bed with you and your husband. Even expecting me, I can’t blame you for screaming.”
“Still, it was rude.” Daphne got to her feet, then turned and helped Gabriel to his. “Come on. Emmanuel said you would probably need sleep to recover, and you probably won’t be any better at it than he is. He has old friends to reestablish contact with and doesn’t need me to drive him, so if you think it would help, I can lay beside you and cuddle you and sing you lullabies.”
Gabriel stared at her, mouth hanging open. “That’s… way more than you need to do for me. You’ve already done so much just letting me crash here until I can get my feet under me.”
“I know. The only person I feel obligated to is myself.” Daphne smiled sweetly at him. “You need help that I can provide with only mildly inconveniencing myself, and I am willing to accept that inconvenience because I genuinely love the way I feel when I help someone. You’re not putting me out any.”
“Bet the humans around here call you an angel,” Gabriel snarked.
“They do. Please don’t take offense.”
“Mostly I’m offended on your behalf, Daphodil. You deserve so much better than to be associated with us.”

“I’ve told you,” Sam said as patiently as he could to the three-year-old. “I don’t know how you’re managing to summon me, but I can’t help you.”
Can’t or won’t? Dean’s voice was clear in the back of his head, but it was easily told to shut the hell up, that it didn’t matter. Sure. He had the power to either provide a demon or force a human to be this boy’s daddy, but he refused to force a human into anything, and the few demons who might be actual decent choices for the role, he refused to force into it or force the boy’s father to accept.
“But I have an idea!” the boy persisted. “No demon. No human. You!”
Sam was so thrown by that he couldn’t think of any retort. For starters, depending on who you asked, he was either a demon or a human. Then there was the fact that as King of Hell, he was just a little busy to be adopting a child and coparenting with a fallen angel. And that was before getting into the six hundred sixty-six reasons why Castiel would absolutely refuse unless Sam magically compelled it, and why he would never do that to Castiel.
“Jack.” Castiel’s exasperated voice came from the doorway. “There you… oh.” He drew his blade. “What are you doing here, Winchester?”
“Your son’s been summoning me,” Sam explained as non-threateningly as he could say it. “He wants a daddy to help you raise him, since you’ve been struggling on your own, and…”
“He can be my daddy and your partner!” Jack finished. “He can handle my outbursts! He keeps answering summons!”
“Jack. A summons, for a creature of Heaven or Hell, is not easily disobeyed. You’re not asking your friend Maggie to come over after playgroup, you are commanding them to obey. Do you understand?”
“Yes. No. I know it’s not an invitation.” Jack looked up at his father. “It’s a wish. See?” He held out a dandelion stem. “I wished for a daddy and blew, and then Sam was here.”
Castiel took the dandelion from his son, studying it intently. He held it out to Sam. “Do you know any reason why this would compel you…?”
Shaking his head, Sam took the stem and let his power flow into it. “There’s none. Not even a cambion’s reality warping where what they believe comes true even if it’s otherwise nonsense.” He had some research to do when he got back to Hell, it seemed.
Castiel took the stem back, fingers brushing against Sam’s. “I assume that you could, if you chose, force a mate on me. Summon a demon, pick a human, possibly even snare an angel.”
“I could. Dean would help me get an angel, if I really wanted one. Not doing it, though. I know I’ve explained free will several times to Jack. It may not come naturally to you, but then again, you fell.”
“For Jack!” Castiel shouted. “He needed…”
“Castiel.” Sam reached out a placating hand, stopping just short of putting it on Castiel’s arm. “I agree with your choice. I’m just saying that free will doesn’t come naturally to angels, so for you to have chosen to fall, you have to have found it somewhere deep within yourself. I can’t take that away from you now, no matter how badly Jack wants a daddy and wants you to have a partner.”
Castiel stared at Sam for what felt like ages. “Jack, go to your room. You’re not in trouble. I just need to speak with Sam about adult things.”
“Okay!” Jack ran off, turning around to hit Sam with some of the most hopeful puppy eyes he’d ever seen. “Bye, Mr. King of Hell!”
“Jack overheard me talking to Dean,” Castiel began as soon as the door was closed behind Jack. “Dean thinks that if I’m going to live a human life, I need to explore all humanity has to offer. Specifically, he encouraged me to ‘go get laid’, and I told him I didn’t see that happening. I have no interest. Dean said that would make it hard to find someone to help me with Jack, and that’s when Jack began seeking a way on his own.”
“Ugh. I’ll tell him off for you. First off he’s wrong, you totally can find someone…” Sam even had an idea. A demon. She might not take well to the lack of sexual interest, but the rest of it she’d probably be okay with.
“That’s not why I’m telling you that.” Castiel glanced at the doorway. “I’m telling you because although Jack is far too many steps ahead with wanting you to be his daddy, it seems he might have been onto something with the idea that you might be a good choice for the role. I know you’re busy, but I also know that much of your work is busywork you can hand off to lieutenants whenever you feel like. Supervised, of course, but I think it could work.”
Once again, Sam found himself flabbergasted and struggling for something to say to that. “Let’s start with a date? And since there’s no point in waiting to introduce me to your son, perhaps taking Jack out to McDonald’s?”
Sam raised an eyebrow as he looked at the sandwich Castiel put in front of him. “What.”
“Dean told me that when he was a child, your mother would cut the crusts off of his sandwiches for him. He said that you had expressed jealousy that no one ever did that for you, in Heaven. I thought I would give it a try.”
“Okay, I get that, but…” Sam picked up the sandwich to examine. “Why a cat shape instead of just normal square?”
“There are two reasons. One, I wanted to talk to you about something cat-related.” Castiel wandered off, returning with a book.
Sam had eaten part of the sandwich, and he set the rest down as soon as Castiel was back. “You know no matter what, Dean won’t let us have a cat.”
“A real one, no, but that’s not what I was proposing.” Castiel opened the book, flipping to a section and handing it to Sam. “I was proposing turning myself into a cat. Dean probably would still object, but in this case, I thought you might be willing to stand up to him and say that he has no standing to override our decision.”
“Um…” Sam had a million objections, but he could at least read what Castiel had in mind before he expressed any of them. After all, Castiel was smart enough to have thought of them and have answers prepared, right?
The book was open to a ritual. In the ritual, a willing person could bind themself to a witch, taking on an animal form to serve as the witch’s familiar. In doing so, it would open a channel for the witch to draw on the familiar for greater power, control, focus, and even a way to share knowledge and thoughts. The main downside appeared to be a lack of privacy if the witch refused to honor their familiar’s mental barriers and the chance for a spell to backfire and cause damage to the familiar as well as – or instead of – the witch.
One of the ways to work around that was to bind yourself to your soulmate. The lack of privacy would already be there, and the risk of backfire would – for a decent witch – be a reason to avoid drawing too much power or doing something they were not in firm control of. It would be a way for Castiel to look after Sam when he couldn’t be along on a hunt, and to call for help himself if he needed it on his own hunt. Sam easily understood why Castiel would propose this.
“And you’re sure you’ll become a cat?”
Castiel nodded. “There are limited options, and while the preferences of the witch and the familiar-to-be can guide the selection, it can’t just make a new option. Between a cat, a toad, and a rat, I suspect we can agree that a cat is the preferable outcome.”
“Yeah.” Sam set the book aside, smiling. “Even Dean’s objections would be more about me embracing my witch side more than you turning into a cat, because as a familiar you wouldn’t be allergen producing. He’s accepting me turning into a Man of Letters, but the witch thing is still weirding him out a bit.”
“You’ve made it clear that what you’re doing is nothing like what the witches you hunt do, and he just needs to get his head around it. So? Are you agreed?”
“Yeah… we’ll need to get some things together, but I’m all for it. Catstiel is a go.” Sam leaned over and kissed Castiel’s cheek, and then picked up his sandwich. Seeing the cat ear reminded him. “What’s the other reason?”
“Hmm?”
“You said there were two reasons for the cat sandwich. One was to start the conversation about you signing on as my familiar. What’s the other one?”
“Oh. Yes.” Castiel smiled and ducked his head. “I asked Dean what to do with the crusts, since it seemed wasteful to just throw them away. He said that’s what his mom probably did, unless she ate them. I don’t make my own PB&Js anymore because of the waste in making them for myself, but if I can enjoy a piece of them without them going to waste… and if they’re not going to waste, then why not make them fancy instead of trying to minimize the amount cut off?”

Castiel walked through the doors of the high school, quickly finding the office and making his way inside.
"May I help you?" the woman behind the counter asked.
"Yes, I'm here to see the Principal," Castiel spoke, "I was called about my daughter, Y/N."
The woman smiled, asking for him to wait while she went to notify the principal of his arrival. When she returned, she had the principal in tow.
"Thank you for meeting with me," she greeted, shaking his hand and asking him to follow her back to her office.
When he entered, he was surprised to see Y/N already sat in one of the two chairs in front of the prinical's desk.
"Please, have a seat," she smiled, gesturig to the empty chair.
Castiel sat down, adjusting his trench coat as he did so. He looked over at Y/N, who refused to meet his eyes, her arms crossed as she stared at the ground.
"I've asked you here today because Y/N and another male student were found hiding in the janitor's closet and kissing."
The principal gave Y/N a pointed look. Y/N refused to look at any of them, pouting and waiting to get out of the embarrassing situation. It was bad enough she was caught, now she had to go through this.
Castiel was quick to understand after many years with the Winchesters and his other 'daughter' Claire. He smoothed things over, apologizing on Y/N's behalf and promising it would never happen again.
Once they were in the car, Castiel turned to Y/N, "So...you have a boyfriend?"
"No."
"You were caught-"
"Doesn't mean he was my boyfriend."
"Y/N," Castiel berated, sounding an awfully lot like Dean, Y/N noted, "This is unacceptable behavior. You should be learning at school and you're far too young to-"
"Okay, just stop," Y/N whined, covering her ears as if that would help end his words, "It's not like that. It was just that time and nothing really happened."
"I just don't want you to get hurt," he admitted defeatedly.
Y/N smiled, patting a hand on Castiel's shoulder, "I promise, if anything happens, I'll tell you. And I guess I'm kinda glad you care so much," she added bashfully.
Castiel grinned at her statement and she rolled her eyes, "No chick flick moments," she complained and Castiel laughed, starting up the car to take her home.

PART 4
Y/N was very weak and sore from their mating, but she wasn't upset about it. That made Cas' Alpha proud, and eager for more. But he was wary of her being as weak as she was. Though she had a smile on her face all the same.
Neither of them was prepared then for the knock at the door and the surprise waiting on the other side. April - a woman they had seen a few times who lived near them - was at the door, an angel blade in one hand, the other lifted to project an invisible force, sending Cas soaring backward into the small apartment.
As April stepped inside, a smirk on her face and blade at the ready, Y/N got to her feet. She was wobbly, her body still sore and her mind lightheaded as it still struggled to adjust to the bond.
Cas got to his feet, ready to defend his mate, throwing himself at April before she could advance on Y/N. Y/N took the opportunity to try and get to one of their hidden weapons, finding Cas' blade quickly.
As she spun around, ready to help her Alpha, the Winchester brothers bounded through the open door. April, now pinned between Cas and Y/N and the formidable brothers, knew there was no getting out of it alive. At least she could try and complete her mission.
She spun, landing a deadly blow to Y/N's chest, the angel blade buried deep, Y/N's breath punched from her lungs from the impact. As Cas screamed, April grabbed the blade Y/N dropped, spinning once more and driving it through Cas's torso.
Dean managed to get to her first, stabbing her through the back, her eyes lighting up as she died. He dropped her body to the ground unceremoniously as he glanced between his friends, and his family, that lay dead or dying on the ground at his feet.
"Zeke," Dean barked, turning towards Sam. before Sam could register, his eyes flashed blue, the Angel hiding within him coming to the forefront of consciousness. "Help them," he begged, seeing the angel glance between the bloody corpses on the ground.
"I only have enough power to save one of them," Ezekiel admitted, standing tall and waiting for Dean to make a decision.
"Cas," Dean uttered, dropping his head in defeat and unable to look at anyone in the room, "Save Cas."
Ezekiel nodded once, turning towards Cas' body and administering a healing glow. As Cas took a gasp of life, his wound closed and healed, Ezekiel passed out, Sam's body falling to the ground.
Dean rushed forward, helping Cas to his feet as he struggled to comprehend what had happened.
"I had April heal you," Dean hastily explained, trying to come up with a reasonable explanation that wouldn't reveal the actual truth. "But she didn't have enough power to heal you both, so I killed her."
Cas' look of confusion morphed to fear as he searched the room for Y/N. Once his eyes landed on her dead body, his heart sunk into his feet. He stumbled his way to her, falling to his knees, his hands reaching out for her but afraid to touch.
He was alive, but she was gone, their brand new bond severed forever. If he was still an angel, if he had his grace, he could heal her, bring her back from the brink of death. But as a human, all he could do was feel her loss and weep.
As Sam came back to consciousness, Dean helped him, filling in what had happened as he did with Cas. Sam's eyes fell to their friends, his own eyes filling with unshed tears at the sight of Y/N.
It was then they both noticed the claim at her neck and their hearts broke further. They both knew that pain and loss and wouldn't wish it upon anyone.
After a proper funeral and a heartfelt goodbye to his mate, Castiel bid his farewells to the brothers once more. He couldn't bear his own pain or the renewed pain in their own eyes. He couldn't stand the loss or the pity. He couldn't stand being human.
He knew he would see her again one day in Heaven. But he could barely stand the thought of what would happen or how much time would pass until that moment. He knew he still had work to be done on Earth, even if he wasn't sure what that was. But he knew more was to come, and he'd carry Y/N with him every step of the way.
A/N: Part 4 of the series. One more part after this. So very sorry for the long delay in posting/following up. Life. 🤷♀️
PART 3
Cas suffered greatly with his rut, though he tried not to show it. He tried to control his Alpha, but he found his eyes followed her like a predator.
Y/N was growing increasingly affected by Cas's rut, despite being a Beta. She assumed it was mostly because she already wanted him in that way. The way he kept looking at her didn't help, making her clench her thighs every time.
As she busied herself in the kitchen, washing the dishes after lunch, Castiel couldn't manage to tear his gaze from her. His eyes trailed over her curves, lingering on her hips and ass. He licked his dry lips as he climbed from the recliner, his feet carrying him towards her of their own accord.
The Alpha within was quickly gaining control over him, the lust and need of his rut making him want only one thing. Even though she was a Beta, Cas felt a pull to her like that of Alphas and Omegas intended to be together, or at least it seemed that way from what he understood.
Not that he could really think straight when his cock was hard as nails, his blood boiling, and her scent growing stronger with every step he took closer to her.
"Y/N."
She jumped at his proximity, turning to face him with utter surprise. She had no idea he had snuck up on her, and so silently at that. The man before her was a mere shadow of the usual Castiel to which she was acquainted. This man was pure Alpha, seeped in pheromones and vibrating with need.
Betas were usually better at resisting the sexual need caused by Alpha and Omega pheromones. But Cas's scent and closeness had her head spinning. She suddenly needed him just as much.
Taking charge, as she usually did, she crashed her lips into his, giving in for the both of them. Cas responded in kind, letting his instincts guide him with what felt good and right. Y/N continued to devour his mouth, pushing him back towards the bed and falling on top of him when they got there.
In a flash, Cas had her flipped onto her back, him hovering over her as he stared down at her. She laughed and tried to fight for dominance once more, but he wasn't having it.
"You're always in charge," Cas muttered, kissing along her neck and breathing in her scent that electrified his spirit, "But right now," he breathed, meeting her eyes once more, "It's my turn to be in control."
Y/N shuddered beneath him, his tone dripping with sex and command in a way she'd never heard before.
"Yes, Alpha," she nodded dumbly as Cas grinned triumphantly.
He proceeded to strip them both bare, Y/N letting him do as he wished, even when some fabric ripped in the process. She couldn't care less. The hungry and desperate actions of the Alpha above her had her submitting to his every whim.
Enamored with the control she was giving him, and his Alpha getting the better of him, Cas pulled back just enough to flip her over, bringing her up on hands and knees. She gasped, before breaking into a moan, her head dropping to the mattress and knees spreading wider as she felt his Alpha cock running through her folds.
She'd be lying if she said she wasn't a little scared. Being an Alpha, he was bigger than she'd ever had before. Being a Beta, she wasn't designed to take it as an Omega could.
But she was determined to try.
Cas slid home in one smooth thrust, his hands holding her hips steady as he began a brutal rhythm. She knew he'd never had sex before, but his instincts were apparently guiding him well as he hammered home again and again.
It was painful, she couldn't lie. The mix of his bruising grip, his length slamming into her cervix, his girth stretching her wide around him. But the absolute pleasure of it all made it absolutely worth it. He hit every spot inside of her, his balls heavy and slapping against her clit. He laid his body over hers, his tongue licking fat stripes against her neck, making her shiver.
It all seemed to crash together in an instant. She came hard as she felt his knot expanding, the stretch of it feeling like it might rip her apart. His seed filling her extended her orgasm, the warmth and flow of it caressing her insides. But his teeth in her neck, claiming her, overrode all other sensations.
It hurt like nothing she'd ever experienced before, and she certainly wasn't expecting it either. Though Betas could be claimed, the mating process was harder on their bodies, making them heal slower and take longer to adjust to the bond.
She went limp and flat on the mattress, her body passing out. Cas, his urges now satiated and his rut cleared, looked down at her with concern. He turned them on their sides, struggling with the knot but managing after a few tries. She seemed okay, just asleep.
He knew it would be harder for her to heal from mating. He lapped at her claim, soothing it as his instincts told him, pulling back to check on it and licking it some more. Once his Alpha was satisfied, he allowed himself to drift to sleep, hoping maybe she'd have a plan when they woke.

The past two months had been some of the best of Gabriel’s life. Even as depowered as he was, even trapped in a female human body by the nephilim he was carrying, there was so much that made up for it. Castiel had been an amazing father-to-be, attending to Gabriel’s every angelic need without making Gabriel ask for anything, and Dean and Sam were both doing their best to help out when and where they could. As Sam had predicted, Dean was somewhat overprotective, treating Gabriel like he was an actual pregnant human whose pregnancy was fragile. It wasn’t; the nephilim could take care of themselves well enough that even if Gabriel did something risky they’d be fine. Dean didn’t care, and it made him happy, and it kind of made Gabriel happy to be taken care of like this. It surprised him as much as anyone.
“Besides, you’re kind of disabled right now, even aside from the pregnancy thing,” Dean pointed out one time when Gabriel reminded Dean that he didn’t actually need help carrying in the groceries. “Yeah, I know, you’re still capable of more than most humans are, but you’re limited in power. From how Cas and Sam talk, you should be able to handle this pregnancy and still kick ass fifteen ways to Sunday, since they’re not archangel-level grace. Even allowing for the fact that they’re not your own grace and that’s a bit complicating, don’t think I haven’t noticed that you’re actually eating.”
“I always eat,” Gabriel protested.
“You munch on candy and we’re not counting eating out or sucking cock,” Dean argued. “You’re eating vegetables. You’re eating fish. Meat, I get, but you’re letting Sam feed you health food.”
Gabriel gave a rueful smile. “Part of that is the same as letting you help me carry groceries, that I’m enjoying the pampering even if I don’t need it and Sam’s enjoying doing it. But, yeah, part of it is that I actually need the nutrition… which is why it’s not just sweets and bacon.”
“So yeah. You can’t do what you normally do, and it’s not about the pregnancy, so you’re disabled until your grace heals. Which means you get spoiled by your family.”
“But… I’m not family,” Gabriel said. “I’m just incubating your kids, which they’re family but I’m not.”
“Cas? Sam?” Dean shouted. “Time for a conversation with the idiot!”
Castiel and Sam appeared quickly while Dean finished putting away the groceries. “What’s wrong, Dean? What do we need to have a conversation with you for?” Sam asked.
“With… hey!” Dean swatted Sam’s shoulder. “I meant this idiot. He just told me, in all apparent seriousness, that just because he’s carrying our kids doesn’t make him family.”
“It doesn’t,” Gabriel said. “I’m a surrogate. You’re taking care of me, but when the job’s done, I move on and you owe me nothing.”
“That’s never been the plan, Gabriel,” Castiel argued. “It’s always been the plan to have you stick around and continue to be a part of this family, even if you were just the weird uncle. In the past two months, it’s become quite clear that you fit in as a parent in your own right.”
Sam nodded. “I know why you can’t shift right now, it’s too taxing on you with the twins, but the only hesitation I have about making you an official part of our relationship is that I don’t know what I’ll be able to do with you in your true form. Dean and Cas will have no problems with it, but…”
Gabriel reached out, petting Sam’s hair. “You don’t have to talk about it. You don’t have to tell me anything. I know what he’s capable of, and why you’re hesitant.”
“I… I’ve talked to Castiel a little about it, and it’s helped, especially now that Dean’s involved. We’re working on some desensitization on some things, and…”
“If you want to work on that with me, I’d be happy to help out, once the pregnancy is far enough along that I can shift,” Gabriel promised. “Also keep in mind that I do have control over my true form. I don’t have to bring out anything Cassie doesn’t have or doesn’t use, and I’ve got a pretty good guess what that is.”
“Wait, you have stuff Cas doesn’t?” Dean said, face lighting up. “Like what?”
“Basically, if you can imagine it or have seen it in tentacle porn, I either have it already or can modify something into it,” Gabriel said. “You probably don’t know this, but, uh, a lot of tentacle porn is based on me giving people dreams of my true form.”
Dean snorted, and Sam shuddered. “I don’t know that I’ll ever be able to watch it the same way again, but really, I feel like I should’ve guessed that,” Sam muttered.
“Yeah, probably,” Dean agreed. “So you can do the milkers and the wormy fingered tentacles and all that?”
“Oh yeah, no problem,” Gabriel said. “Long as it won’t trigger Sam, or he’s not participating… is it okay if he’s not participating, or is that cheating?”
“You are one of us,” Castiel growled. “The only reason we haven’t included you in things before is because you always decline the invitation, and I haven’t wanted to press the issue, but you are one of us. It’s not always feasible to have everyone involved, and sometimes someone just isn’t interested, but you are one of us. If you want to have sex with one or more of the rest of us, you are allowed, and it cannot be cheating within our group.” Dean and Sam nodded their agreement to that.
“I have a way we can prove it,” Dean suggested. “Take off your shirt.”
“Um… sex isn’t really going to prove it, and right now, the hormones are saying no,” Gabriel stammered. “I swear it’s not me saying no, you know me better than that, but the hormones…”
“This isn’t about sex,” Dean said, once he’d recovered from the shock of Gabriel saying no to sex. “Just do it, okay? I promise, minimal touching required.”
Gabriel was not exactly reassured by that, but Castiel gave him a solemn nod, so he went along with it. Dean reached out, placing a hand over Gabriel’s chest near the heart. He only left it there a second, and when he pulled back, Gabriel looked down. “That didn’t…”
“Just wait.” Sam reached out, placing his hand where Dean’s had been. Still nothing happened.
Castiel reached out, taking Gabriel’s hand with one of his. “Put your hand up where Sam and Dean’s were.” Gabriel obeyed, and when nothing happened again, he raised an eyebrow. Castiel just nodded. “My turn.” He reached up and put his hand on the spot, and this time, Gabriel could feel a tingling. When he looked down, he noticed two things.
First was obvious. There was an anti-possession sigil burned into his skin just above his heart. Sam and Dean pulled collars aside to show theirs, and Castiel unbuttoned his shirt to show his. “So we have matching tattoos now?”
“We do. And, check this one out.” Castiel unbuttoned his shirt further, revealing another marking on his belly. Sam and Dean both quickly pulled up their shirts, showing off the same marking, and Gabriel looked down to see it on himself. A squid, an octopus, a moose, and an impala were all entwined around each other. “That one was a surprise, but I knew the sigil would work. It’s become a symbol of the family. As we said… you’re one of us.”
