like yeah ok you could argue this about most parents but james brooks really could have just killed her whenever he wanted and no one would have been more than moderately concerned until it was well past too late

the difference of course lies in the fact that it’s patently ridiculous to imagine any of the other upp parents killing their child(ren). Janet and Bill Wisp would sooner stab themselves than hurt their son. The Fleetwoods would have a collective mental breakdown rather than hurt Norah. Lui’s mom may be too busy to show it so far but she does love her son dearly. Even Eleanor Brooks would never lay a hand on Isaac. A harsh word or a guilt trip, yes, but not any physical harm.

But James Brooks? Even before we knew he was being puppeted by Caleb Abrahams? It was unlikely, but not… not impossible the way it is for the other parents. And so it kind of doesn’t matter whether or not he was being controlled. The fact remains that at any time, Isaac could have been told to get in the car and been driven to her death, and no one, not even her friends, would have been concerned enough to look until she was already cold. Because that’s her dad and therefore that’s unthinkable. Because no one but us—not even Isaac—really understands how not-impossible that outcome was.
