thoughts on the UPP fans being vocaloid fans?

im not 100% sure on the idea but they (especially norah and maybe isaac) strike me as like people that would listen to vocaloid,,,,

They all listen. Nightcore, daycare and vocallid of all kinds. Norah is the most into it. Issac isn’t far behind and will pretends sometimes but has that shit on blast. Lui listens to it the least but really likes the songs with emotional depth, he’d probably really like wowaka songs and was sad when he died.

Issac likes the up beat happy ones the most. Norah does too but she’d probably be a maretu fan. Will tries to look cool and talks about the darker songs but they actually really freak him out even if he thinks they sound good. Hes a GHOST fan for sure though. Lui is secretly blasting rabbit hole by deco I’d imagine.

It’s not the sort of music I imagine them all listening together casually, maybe in pairs Norah usually present, but they all really enjoy it to various degrees. Some songs have definitely made them all cry at least once. Useless child by Kikuo was not great for Issac. I'm glad that you're evil too was a moment for Norah and Will.

The Giotto painting you mentioned in the tags is so cool… leaning into the religious stuff is ofc very on theme but the one I saw specifically framed it in a way where Isaac would be Judas and the priest would be Jesus—which feels backwards but in hindsight plays well with the role of the church in Deadwood? Because Isaac has betrayed the church by abandoning it, and the shtriga is both unnaturally extending his own life and literally a preacher like Jesus was. Plus of course flipping that dynamic represents the way the church is a fucked up place in Deadwood especially

Also speaking of Norah I feel like there’s some way to use Monet’s work as inspiration for the Dark Young scene.. thinking specifically about Coin De Apartement and the painting of Camille Monet on her deathbed, idk if that makes sense but the vibes are there and I think Norah gives very expressionist in terms of art history lol specially Monet inspired cause he loves painting the water…

so i may have gone a little crazy with finding these (in no small part bc duckduckgo refused to show me the correct paintings—wouldn't surprise me if one or two of these STILL isn't correct) and further giving my opinion

Dante and Virgil for the shtriga infecting Isaac... i do see it the vision is incredibly there. however can i say something else crazy and suggest also isaac trying to escape her father after the car crash. muss up the scene/timeline and have the couple in the background be mr. abrahams/the town/isaac's mom/the upplings watching and not interfering. the dead guy is also isaac's dad or maybe bella or the abrahams kid. and ofc this all is implied even with this being the shtriga attacking isaac because the shtriga and james brooks are parallels of each other.

Ivan the terrible and his son Ivan for Isaac and her father... god. yeah. down to the blood cascading down her cheek from where the branch scraped the hell out of her face in the car crash. the gentleness coming far, far, far too late as ivan the terrible/james brooks looks more like a skeleton than a father. i'd love to see this also paralleling caleb abrahams cradling his son's body in a similar position, probably leaning a little more la pieta in the posing for the jesus angle? but very very accurate. the destroyed room too a la the destroyed car/the animal sacrifices all around them.

Old Man's Death. i think you nailed it with this being agnes's death at the hands of the shtriga. just bump that hue a little more orange than yellowy and it's perfect

Return of the Prodigal Son. this one i'm v curious to hear your thoughts on because if I'm understanding correctly you're tying this one to when Mr. Abrahams used Lui's full name to control him with the magic hair stick? Which I can sooorta see with the way the rest of the upp/figures in the painting are standing and watching and off in shadow unable to do anything, but I'm curious how you're relating the focus of the painting here to Lui and Mr. Abrahams. I tend to take a very very literal approach to this sort of thing so I'm wondering how to see what you're seeing. To me though this reads as another Isaac about to be sacrificed moment, with the rest of the UPP as the figures, Will ofc is the one who has the most light on his face because he's the one who reminds mr brooks of his dead, and the prodigal son in question has all that shabbiness about his clothing which reflects isaac's torn shirt/bloodied face and arms/lack of jacket/etc.

Opening the Ointment of Beauty. YEAH THIS ONE TRACKS. DOWN TO NORAH AS THE GUARD LEANING IN CLOSE TO TRY AND SEE. if i were to recreate this as the two of them i'd actually keep the trees in the background to represent how close this thing brings the dark young to both of them

Pandora by Waterhouse. Also good for Lui but i agree for this being William, specifically him finding the things returned!Agnes burned. Alternately I could see it being Norah opening her memories of her first bout of madness... idk how you'd represent that exactly but it feels appropriate to the pandora theme imo

Cabenel's Death of Icarus. AT LEAST I HOPE SO BECAUSE DUCKDUCKGO DID NOT WANT TO SHOW ME THIS ONE. anyways yeah will as icarus but instead of the sun he has the supernatural and instead of daedalus he has lui and isaac and norah and instead of wings he has nothing at all. metaphorically speaking. um. this one's realyl really good no notes you nailed it

The Scream. you also nailed this one it's Norah to a tee facing the Horrors

Monet's Coin de Apartement and Camille on her Deathbed. I agree that both of these feel very very Norah. I especially like using impressionist/less realistic stuff for her because of her emphasis on listening over looking and piecing together a scene that way? As for what scenes these remind me of... the first one definitely reminds me of her and the Dark Young, either her walking out of the dark trees to the brighter, snowier road or framing her as a will-o-wisp in the dark woods (playing around with the light a little bit, brightening up the child more than the window? or the window is the will-o-wisp and it's representing how close Norah is to death here as she limps towards teh light/road.)

Camille on her Deathbed though reminds me not of her bout of madness in the tree coffin (although I get where you're coming from with that) but rather when she was tied to the table in Will's basement. Something about the lines across Camille's chest and the way nothing but herself is really real or understandable reaaaaaallly invokes that particular bout of madness to me, and specifically how Norah might remember anything of that particular moment.

They went to a festival out of town once. Issac never felt like a good brother, even less a good son. But, Bella loved the plush he got her there. She’d go to bed with it every night following, even after he annoyed the hell out of her.

He stopped trying to make sure she knew he loved her at some point. He isn’t sure why.

I love how strangely similar deltarune and upp feel at times, mostly in the small religious town aspect but more too.

William is a Kris fan, he finds them relatable, loves the lore and was definitely a gaster theorist. Him and Norah screamed when they saw sans and they egg hunt hard.

Norah’s is Noelle, once again finding her relatable. She really likes ralsei too but at the end of the day she connects with Noelle a lot. (Even more so after will disappears) who said that.

Issac’s is Susie. He adores lancer and spent a good five minutes spamming lancer in Kris pocket in chapter two for the splat sound effect. But Susie he relates to. He thinks she’s really cool and wants her and either Noelle or Kris to kiss really bad. Norah is with him on this.

lui says his is also Noelle, and this isn’t a total lie. But, low-key, it’s berdly. He hates that it is, but it is, because he related to him. He’s a little embarrassed about it. He likes ralsei a good amount too though

William knows he should leave, he has to, Hes putting them all in danger. Still, for a time he can’t help but linger in trees and around corners, watching them grieve.

Norah never gives up. Among all her friends she refuses the reality of it the longest. Will cant be gone, because she still sees him. In the corner of her eyes, in the trees. Sometimes, she swears she hears him.

Norah dealing with the grief of wills death, chasing a ghost she swears is there. And it is. Until it’s not.

Beat spamton today. The interaction following that fight has haunted me. When you choose no, Kris screaming it. A desperate attempt to convey how not okay they are. They have no control and no way out, watching spamton drop like the doll he was without his strings and what could happen to them

I think William, much like with upp as a group to begin with, is the kind of thing that binds them all. I could see them all dating each other to various degrees, but the one person they’re, definitely, all dating, is will.

Isaac and will tend to pair up perhaps the most, Isaac often enough escaped to wills basement even before getting together that sleeping cuddled up wasn’t unusual. They’re disgustingly queer and Norah really likes watching it happen as she is very much a fujoshi, in a non fetishizing way. She loves watching her boyfriend’s kiss though. Which they do, a good amount

Norah and lui are casually affectionate, cheek kisses and sitting next to eachother reading. Norah and lui go on library dates and things like it, the sort will and Isaac have less patience for.

But so do Norah and Isaac, more so going to get or geek out over comics or video game over together. They would not shut up about undertale and Isaac beta read Norah’s self insert fanfiction. She shows him various manga

will and lui have known each other the longest. Lui did wills piercings and will dyes Luis hair. They probably are the least typically “romantic” probably closer to queer platonic (which really canon wise they all low-key feel like to me to begin with) but would casually kiss or something on occasion.

much like will and lui, Norah and Issac have less typically romantic interaction. Issac gives her his jacket when it’s cold if she isn’t already wearing one of wills hoodies (she’s the one who gets all their clothes since she fits them all due to being the smallest) and cheek kisses and cuddling in piles with the others is common. He lets her dress him up the most, doing his hair and trying on skirts. They’ve probably only fully kissed a few times, or it’s at least not too common.

will and Norah are close, they paint each others nails the most (Norah paints all their nails) but after diseased residents it’s a lot closer. Even before that though, they always checked on each others mental health the most. They share anxiety and bad coping mechanisms. Will shares his cds with her when she needs to shut things out and she makes him get proper rest and eat when she can.

lui probably knows the most about Issac’s living situation, besides will that is. Will sees more of it but lui understands more of it. Lui helps Issac with school work at times, as does Norah but less often since Issac hates asking her with how overwhelmed she is. And Issac encourages Luis sometimes bad ideas. They’re one on one rarely, but are close. They kiss on occasion as well. It’s a bro thing really
