do you have any tips on drawing’s backgrounds?? I find you art so mesmerizing but I don’t understand the rhyme and reason behind whimsical landscapes 😓😓

hi!!! ok so! ive been trying to think abt how to answer this for a billion years because like i dont really know how to .......teach........... or explain.... but i think at least i can tell you how i learned to draw backgrounds! and how i still do background studies to this day! !

i recorded a little video of me doing a bg study live in case my explanation isnt clear, but it ended up being 15minutes long so i put it up on youtube ToTTTT heres the link v

while i dont specifically have tips on drawing backgrounds, i do have tips for background studies so u can learn on ur own c:

i kinda just grab whatever image on pinterest catches my eye and a big texture brush (can be any, the CSP ID for the one im using is 2232706 ). i would say my personal rules for these types of studies are 1. no sketch 2. no colourpicking 3. no tracing/overlaying the img to get proportions right . also 4. NO ZOOMING IN!!!!! i think rly important aspect is training urself to be able to at least mostly eyeball colours n composition itll make drawing stuff from imagination easierrrr later down the line .....

once im pretty confident that i have the most important crucial parts of the reference down, ill hide it and draw the rest from memory/imagination . when im nearly done i will look at it again just in case there's any last minute corrections that need doing but i find that this helps with like.........making a DRAWING instead of just replicating a photo you know what i mean ? this might be personal preference if ur a realism artist maybe this isnt ur vibe but i like to get maybe a little wacky with it.... and i find it easier to do that when im not worried about staying true to my reference smile

ok i think thats mostly everything! i hope the live speedpaint is a little more helpful than my word vomit lolllll ive been thinking maybe of figuring out how to do art streams i think i would be better at explaining some of these things if i could Talk with my Voice maybe . i dunnooo thooooo ehhhh maybe onday

hi i just wanted to say i recently read your isaac brooks fics and they are so unbelievably incredibly wonderful and thank you for making them. they're easily my favorite fandom media so far, especially for the aftermath of undead residents (i've been trying to not spoil myself since i'm still working through empty graves so your stuff again was PERFECT for that)
