Ok, so when Loki died in TDW, I have a feeling he actually died. The kursed actually made contact with him, which couldn't have happened if it were one of his magic clones (since in the first Thor movie, we see a Jotun run right through one of them). Instead, I think he died and went to the realm of Hel. Now, in Norse mythology, Hel had a liking for Balder. Loki received a favor because he brought Balder to her (by indirectly killing him). I think that when he met Hel, he persuaded her to make a deal: he could be brought back to life in exchange for Balder. It sets up Thor:Ragnarok.
