shirahama is COOKING with easthies' character someone has got to stop her!! she has crafted the perfect demonstration of the consequences that allowing an inherently flawed, oppressive system to consume oneself has on the human psyche. easthies has associated his duty as the deputy captain of the knights moralis so closely to his actual identity that they have become indistinguishable. shirahama has said herself that easthies is an extreme workaholic, and in doing so, he often neglects his health by falling into habits where he forgets to eat, sleep, and take regular breaks (i speculate commander vinanna might have contributed something towards his commitment. their entire relationship reeks of indoctrination). and what happens when a personality like that, who devotes his entire being to a system they genuinely believe protects and maintains order, is forced to watch, in real time, that very system betray the people during silver eve and cost human lives? easthies realises: the system that defined his moral philosophy, his every action, his entire identity, is flawed. and he loses his fucking mind. if the system is flawed that means he is, too. if the system is no longer to be followed anymore, then what is the point of his existence? you see this way of thinking seep into ch97, wherein he's under house arrest after the events of silver eve. he is just laying in bed, doing nothing all day, not even eating, visible eyebags. his hair is a mess, his room is a mess. he is uncaring when he is pushed against the wall by an enraged utowin, he is uncaring when loroga storms in. he lost his purpose. his entire will to live.
this is just a guess, but i think when easthies was younger, he was given the opportunity by a brimmed cap to wield forbidden magic and save the life of a loved one who was actively dying. he denied the opportunity, putting complete and utter faith in the system of the pointed caps. he knows he had the capacity to save that person. he knows. but the rules are absolute. and, years later during silver eve, when he is forced to watch others take the opportunity he didn't, he is forced to confront that the blame and guilt lies on him. and that is something he just cannot accept.
you ever wonder whether easthies has ever mindwiped himself... if he ever had thoughts, no matter how fleeting they might have been, that did not align with the pact... and so he removed them himself
“levi didn’t choose erwin so how can they be canon” baby he did
thinking abt erwin in s1 sidelining levi during the most crucial battle as they knew it against the female titan simply because he had a sprained ankle. surely humanity’s strongest could handle a bit of discomfort, no? there are bigger things at stake right now!!
and then it’s even funnier cause when erwin LOST A WHOLE LIMB he still rode out to battle without thinking twice like?????????
it rlly gets you thinking if erwin SAW the state of levi during the final battle im afraid he’d pop a blood vessel… someone check up on him in paths 😭😭
anybody else incredibly unsettled by the amount of people in the aot fandom that think levi surviving was the worst ending isayama could have possibly given him?
yes, he was certainly in a horrible place post-rumbling, and i genuinely could not imagine the pain & survivor’s guilt he would have had to go through after watching everybody he loves die, but saying that it would have been easier on him to just die feels like a disservice to his entire character.
ever since he was born levi never lived for himself. every day was a constant battle to stay alive, living in a perpetual state of viligance and paranoia. and yet, despite everything, he is still the most empathetic character. he still finds beauty and a reason to move forward in a world that has been nothing but cruel to him. if anybody deserves this peaceful aftermath, it’s him.
levi ackerman is genuinely the worlds biggest fraud when it comes to the idgaf competition that man is a CATEGORY 1 YEARNER
LOVE LOVE LOVE whenever erwin compares levi to a cat in fanfics. YES erwin's first impression of levi was a vexxed alleycat with his tail held high, YES he likens levi's crash outs to a feral cat meowing incredibly loudly, with sharp claws and downcast ears, and YES he thinks a sated levi, drinking a steaming cup of tea after a rough day, is identical to a docile kitten with droopy eyes, purring contentedly as they lick themselves clean. in this household catboy levi will forever be famous 🫶🫶
The Fallen Angel Levi Ackerman
wow... the artist really depicted his eyes so perfectly here. filled with hostility and rage, because that is just the cruel exterior levi, who has never known gentleness nor kindness, had been forced into embodying. and yet beneath the surface, you can still see the underlying pain. oh, my BABY you are so loved 😭😭😭🩷🩷
mikasa and levi knowing firsthand just how cruel this world is yet they are one of the few characters that still reach out for its beauty.
mikasa, in particular: despite the unfavourable cards she had been dealt with ever since birth, despite her constant losses and setbacks and struggles, in the end she was still able to make the selfless decision. she was still able to sacrifice the one person she swore to protect for the sake of humanity. and in doing so, she was able to find freedom — not out in the world, but within herself. eren was a slave to freedom, and yet mikasa found freedom in letting go. in choosing love, despite everything.
one thing i freakin' love about eruri is how they balance each other out. erwin is characterised as a perpetual gambler, someone who sees the world in hypotheticals, in opportunities to gain or to lose. levi's line in acwnr phrases it perfectly: "his eyes are gazing up at something i can't even see or understand."
and this outlook contrasts levi a lot, who is incredibly grounded in what is tangible. it goes as far back as his childhood, in which all he was thinking about was the short term outcomes: what he could do to survive for just one more day, what he could do to acquire just one more meal, one more penny, etc. so they stabilise one another. erwin brought levi above ground, gave him his wings, and in return, levi gave erwin weight, gave him somewhere to return to, made sure he didn't stray too far away from levi's protection.
Sundown.
