“I always am. You know that.”
“I know you are. I just... I worry. I’m a mom that’s what we do.”
“I need you to be careful out there, okay?”
Jefferson shrugged his shoulders, as if trying to dislodge everything he was feeling. “A person. A boyfriend. A partner.” He wasn’t sure how to describe him. They’d only been together for a month and a half at the most, but that was all it had taken for him to fall in love. “They’ll be happy to meet you too. But thanks mom. We’ll clean them and get everyone settled in.”
Catelyn watched her son talk about his new friend, glad that he found someone, but still cautious. She hasn't trusted anyone other than her children since this whole mess started, and as lovely as this young man sounded, he still had to prove himself to her. "Look at you. Finding yourself a boyfriend in the middle of all this." She smiled and sat down on one of the chairs and looked up at her son. "If there's anything you want me to do to help, or anything you need at all, I'm just right here, okay?"
Jefferson cleared his throat. “I know they have,” he replied. They grew up without him. Thinking he was dead. Which was why he was so confused by their reactions. He had been happy to have found them. His family was whole again. But clearly things had changed. “What if I can’t give them time?” he asked quietly. “Clearly none of us are truly safe. I can’t beg their forgiveness for dying.” Jefferson sighed. “Yes, a room or two, please. I have… a person. You can meet him tomorrow. He’s got a sister. I think you’ll like her. She’s tough like you.” He smiled, the love clear in his eyes as he spoke about them. “We’ve been on the road for awhile. Since the last full moon. Food and a place to sleep would be amazing right now.”
"You don't mean that." Catelyn watched her eldest carefully. She understood why he would feel that towards Spencer and Raven, but she didn't like it. When they were fighting, she felt the need to patch things up between them, but probably not before having a word with the twins about their rudeness. "A person?" She smiled, relieved that he found someone while he was out there alone. "I'd be glad to meet them. There's two rooms vacant down the hallway. It would need some cleaning up, but it's livable."
Jefferson allowed himself to cry for awhile. He hadn’t since he’d gotten separated from the twins but now felt like a good time. “They don’t need me anymore,” he finally admitted quietly, letting her hold him. “We spent so long missing each other, why can’t they just look at me? I need them. I need you.”
"Of course they need you, Jefferson. They're still your little brother and sister... they've just grown up a bit." In her mind, Catelyn was already constructing a speech for the twins. She expected them to be here with them, instead they chose to leave again. She brought them up to be better people than that. "They just need time, but I'm glad you're okay. Do you need anything? Are you hungry?"
"I know," he answered hesitantly. "I thought I was dead at first too. I’ve been traveling, trying to find you and the twins." Jefferson sighed, staring at her, trying to get used to seeing her again. "I’ve been… surviving. I found people on my way here. Lost others. The twins actually found us." He looked behind him as well and frowned. "I don’t know. They weren’t happy to see me. I don’t think they want me back." He rubbed his arms and turned back to his mother, forcing his way back into her arms. "I thought I was lost," he sobbed.
Catelyn was confused. She'd thought the twins would be happy to see their brother. They were devastated when he was separated from them, absolutely destroyed. "What? Of course they want you back, honey. I want you back. What did they do?" She furrowed her brows, but before she knew it he was in her arms again. She held him tightly, heart breaking at the sound of his sobbing. "I know, sweetheart. But you're here now. You're with me. You're home. You're never getting lost again, okay? Not while I'm around.." She kissed his cheek and just stood there, holding her son. There was nothing else she'd rather do.
Jefferson immediately hugged his mother back, wrapping her tight in his arms. “God, mom, I thought I’d never see you again either.” He felt five years old again, having gotten lost in the mall. “I made it. I’m okay. We’re okay.”
Catelyn didn't want to let go of her child. In her dreams this has happened, but she never thought she'd be able to hold him again. Her children were safe and alive and there was nothing more that she could ever want. "We thought you were dead," she continued to sob. "Where have you been? How have you been? How are you here?" She pulled away from him to look behind him, expecting the twins to be there but there was nothing but an empty corridor. "Where are Raven and Spencer?"
"…Mother? Is that really you?"
Catelyn was trying to tidy up their little tent, praying silently that they come home safe and alive. It was nerve wracking for her to stay behind and not go with them, but they had insisted that she stayed, that they knew where she was. Ever since they've found each other again she had hardly left their sight. She was worried they feared losing her again, like they did their brother. She was about to go out, to check if they had returned, when in front of her stood a ghost. But he was there, he was flesh, her flesh. "Jeff..." her heart swelled. "Jefferson." She walked up to him and gave him the tightest hug she could give. "My baby." She started sobbing. "You're okay. You're alive."
