“I believe you 100%! Oui, I’m sure! My mama right now is just really sad about something. In fact.. she’s been gone for a week and… I haven’t talked to her in so long.”

“Well the question is here: did you really have fun or not? I don’t want you to go somewhere where you’re being mistreated. Oi, better to be strong and have me step in to protect you than to just let you keep getting bullied. I don’t want you to be hurt. If anything, the best I can do now if you don’t want that is to just give you advice. Their words may hurt, but you can’t let that stick. Do you know how much I’m hated by my own sisters? If there’s anyone else that knows that they’re bullied just as much as you do, it’s me. Now, now. Your father is a fighter. I know he will come home. Plus, he’s the captain, and leaders always make the best fighters.”

“I did at times, but they kinda ruined the experience for me. I had a good bus ride home so I was feeling positive when I got home and told you about the fun things we did. If you want to speak to my teacher that would be good, but please don’t ring the parents; they’ll hate me forever. It’s not right that they leave you out, we all feel it and notice it, Mom. You’re not alone though, okay? I love you so so much and I wouldn’t trade you for anyone! Even if my mother was Beyoncé or someone like that, I’d still choose you. I know I’m only 14, but I’m here for you. You’re the best mom ever and I’m so lucky to have you. I know that.”

“Oh non. I’m sorry, but I don’t think you’re the reason why! I never understood the deal with Aunt Rachel. She may be kinda off at first, but I think she’s got a heart somewhere! What?! Non, non, my mama loves you! She says you’re the sweetest girl of your family!”

“She’s the kindest person I know, she always tries to help and I love her very, very much.  Are you sure?”

“I don’t know why war is still occurring, but unfortunately it is, dear, and your father has to do his part in protecting all of us. We have to be proud of him. They were mean to you? Cathy, why didn’t you call me? I could’ve picked you up from camp and we could’ve spent the whole weekend together. Now, what are these girls saying, because I’m about to contact their parents myself. They have no right to treat my little girl this way. I get sad yeah, but we still talk! It’s not like he’s away forever.”

“Because I wanted to have fun with my friends and I didn’t want it to be a massive thing; I’m exaggerating it, it wasn’t that bad...Please don’t do that! You’ll just make it worse! Then I’ll be known as a snitch that went to her mother to get them in to trouble. What...What if one day...he doesn’t come back?”

“Seriously? You’re amazing! I don’t see why anyone would hate you at all!”

“They say that I’m the reason Daddy goes away all the time. Everyone always leaves us out of everything because they don’t like my mom. I don’t think Delphine likes me because of that.”

“Cathy, no. Sweetheart, that’s not the reason why Daddy is gone all the time. You know he has to serve the country and do what is right. The girls at school don’t know anything what’s going on, so remember what I told you? Their words don’t matter. We adore you so much, darling. We won’t stop loving you, even Daddy, okay?”

“Why is war right? I don’t want it to be right. What is he actually fighting for? Their words hurt...You know that I said that I had great fun at camp, well they were mean to me there but I didn’t want you to think that you’ve wasted your money on me. I know you do, I love you both. But I see how sad you get every time he goes away.”

“So many girls at school hate me and I don’t know why.”

“Just some girls at school. They said that Daddy doesn’t love me because he’s away all the time. They said that, because...I don’t know why. Because I’m adopted and my real parents didn’t love me, but I know you and Daddy do, but maybe I’m the reason he’s gone all of the time.“

“I don’t have time to be listening to this right now, okay? Christ. I have to be at the hospital for check-ups in an hour and I still can’t find my god-damn keys!”

“A little but sleeping in my own bed really helped, it was an actual bed! And my mom made me tea before I went to sleep.”
