Why am I SO BAD at writing tension?

I keep reading these delicious fics where the tension is so *palpable.* It’s so good and so much fun to read.

And then I sit down to write the same pairing and they are just instantly in love. Heart eyes. Falling all over themselves. In my current WIP one just got on a train to go see the other so they wouldn’t have to wait so long for their first date.

He’s made eye contact with the most beautiful, cloud-blue eyes he’s ever seen.  The sight has crashed Nick’s brain, which is in the process of restarting in safe mode. Meanwhile, the owner of the eyes has stood up and held out a hand, all without breaking eye contact. Nick’s body wants to touch that hand, and he reaches out to shake it with zero instruction from his still-rebooting brain. A deep voice from about a million miles away is saying, “Ah, here he is...” But auditory inputs are currently queued behind visual processing, which is monopolizing his RAM with pretty.
