Like a month ago I messaged a craft group about accessibility for wheelchairs and the answer I got was “there’s a lot of stairs but we have cute boys who can carry you”. And it’s…not good. As a wheelchair bound person I largely depend on people when I want to go out and do *anything* so I’m used to it, I laugh it off, make an annoyed post about it and off I go. But I wanna just say a thing real quick.

Even if I wasn’t gay, wasn’t a survivor scared of men, getting help as a disabled person is just…Not a pleasant thing to us! Imagine for a sec how you’d feel being carried up a flight of stairs. You’re a grown person. You’re being touched in an awkward way. You’d rather do it yourself. You’re So Uncomfortable. It’s not where I look for the beginning of a romantic relationship. So like…could abled people stop doing this thing where they think helping us in a condescending and infantilizing way is cute? Cause I’m real tired. Just get me a ramp or lift and I’m cool. I don’t need a dating service when I’m just trying to go about my day

the thing is depression was never destigmatized the narrative just switched from “no one has depression you’re just using it as an excuse” to “everyone has depression you’re just using it as an excuse”

If someone says “Hey I saw you move your leg/whatever they are taking issue with and you don’t need a wheelchair/you’re faking” instead of replying I’m not paralyzed, say “Not everyone uses a wheelchair for the same reason.” And then leave the conversation because that person is an asshole.

It’s important to advocate that there is more than one reason to use a wheelchair, while still lifting up people who are full time users and non-ambulatory. Some people with paralysis can move their legs. Others can’t. We need to uplift the most impacted of us.

hey fun fact, disabled people with bad relationships with their parents often don't get to leave those relationships.

when you are reliant on your parents for care, the amount you can do to stop them from treating you like shit, yelling at you for asking them for help etc. is very minimal.

even if you have never had a good relationship with them, if they are extremely abusive, in this world where disabled people are left to fend for themselves in fucked situations, we often don't get to leave the relationships that harm us and many of the community die because of that.

we don't get to leave our abusers because we rely on them for care and they hold that above us.

Defend disabled people who aren't only making the healthiest possible choices forever. We need to stop holding the people with the least resources to the highest standards of health. We need to stop pointing fingers at disabled people who aren't even doing anything your average abled person isn't also doing.

They should require an actual wheelchair user to come test if a place is actually accessible before they are allowed to call it wheelchair accessible

Honestly, any and all public buildings need to be tested by multiple people with different disabilities and mobility aids. Not every wheelchair is the same proportionally, so, ideally, you'd have at least one person with a slim chair and another person with a bulkier chair test it, and have multiple wheelchair and mobility aid users in the [BUILDING] at the same time because multiple disabled people deserve to enter and exist comfortably and easily in places at the same time.

Doctors are professionals, not authorities, they are supposed to work with you not make choices for you, if your doctor does not listen to you, does not respect you, and will not compromise with you, then it's not unreasonable to want a different one.
