What I've been trying to say tonight is that the selfship community as a whole has a serious problem with treating hispanic and latino characters as normal.
White people (and other people of color at times! You are not exempt from this.) will take characters like us and make our language and accents exotic, they will make our men stoic and aggressive and inherently sexual, then masculinize our women to do the very same to them. They will present themselves as fragile while presenting their f/os as the ones who will protect them, often extremely aggressively. They'll add our music to their NSFW character playlists and they'll write their f/os speaking poorly phrased Spanglish and call it a day. But what they don't do is take a moment to actually look into the culture of the character, or wonder for a SECOND if they are making their hispanic/latino mutuals uncomfortable or isolated by being so downright strange about us. Thinking about our culture or their mutuals any deeper than they have makes them uncomfortable, so they don't. And on the off occasion, people will look into our culture and force themselves into cultural traditions or write their self inserts with a culture that isn't theirs.
And whenever anyone speaks up about it, you trivialize us or talk over us or present yourself as such a wonderful ally in our notes. By giving us examples of when this has become an epidemic in the past, you are making it seem like it no longer happens. By trying to explain that you don't do this in the notes of a post you are taking attention away. I need you guys to reevaluate the way you treat our characters, and by extension, our culture, and either know you have been normal or decide to do better. Sit down and shut up.
