did you see mantis’ new skin in the rivals s6 battlepass :)
I did, def inspired by her Grootfall outfit but not sure how I feel about the gladiator look... I think I prefer the comic version cuz I'm a sci-fi guy 😫 I also like the asymmetrical boots. But new Mantis skin is always a win regardless
your art style and colors have captivated me and i think i have devoured everything you've posted since i first discovered you. and so i must ask. as someone who is terrible at colors and typically just sketches messily and deletes it halfway through-
how do you pick your colors?? your style is so crisp and crunchy and unlike anything i've ever seen?? hypnotic is the best way I can describe it
This is SOOO sweet thank you so much 😭💕 I took a while responding cuz I was trying to figure out how to best help. Especially because I usually complain about my own colors...LOL but. I'm gonna narrow it down to a few things I use that you can try, lots of talking incoming.
1. Base the rest of the coloring around the skin tones, and don't be afraid to start with very saturated skin, this will lead you to pick more saturated colors to surround the skin and balance it out.
This also is important if you want to give your piece a certain tint, whether its a cooler blue for a darker day or brighter and warmer, the skin can work as a great starting point for the rest of the colors.
2. When painting shadows I usually move in a cooler direction on the color wheel (but still relatively saturated) and when adding highlights I go more saturated and bright. Another thing to keep in mind is that the more yellow a hue, the brighter or glowier it will appear (like Adam's hair highlight above.)
Don't be afraid to play around with colors of shadows and highlights after you've put down some base colors! I never get it perfect on the first try.
3. Think about your darkest dark, do you want a more subdued pallet or something more contrasting? Your values are going to create the atmosphere for your piece, and if you have a suddenly very dark part of your piece that doesn't align with the lighting, it might look off. Here I was trying out a grayer color for Mantis' hair since the rest of the piece is so bright and warm. Same goes for light colors, if you want your piece to be more dimly lit then avoid light colors and go darker than you expect for the lightest parts.
4. Something that has helped me a lot is knowing that, if you have a very warm pallette, you can simply go less saturated on the wheel and it will APPEAR green or blueish. Stay in a certain range and it will be easier, here you can see the green of Mantis' shirt and makeup is actually yellow, but appears green because of her and Adam's orangish skin tones. This works the same way for a cooler toned palette, using a greyer blue or purple will appear warmer.
Hope that helped! I talked a bit too much... Good luck!
Edit: I forgot to add: the background color of your piece is going to influence how your colors appear, so take that into consideration as well.
