is it possible that plants have consciousness?
this is actually a small sub branch of botany thats been growing and gaining some recognition in the past 5 years or so called plant cognition! we’ve been thinking about if plants can possibly be intelligent to any degree for centuries, but the main paper that started up this huge discussion in the modern era was one called Experience Teaches Plants to Learn Faster and Forget Slower in Environments Where It Matters by Monica Gagliano, a plant researcher in Australia who specializes in it. because the results indicated that plants were possible of learning and retaining information in a kind of memory in response to environmental changes, it received a lot of backlash and denial- generally in science, that kind of intelligent reaction to an organism’s environment is a good indicator of cognitive behavior in the organism. it got rejected by 10 different journals before being published in 2014.
the experiment worked like this. i’ve talked before about mimosa pudica, a tropical plant that curls its leaves back when touched (they go back to normal in a few minutes):
this is to help deter predators among other things. but in this experiment, Gagliano used it as an indicator of stimulus and to test cognitive function. It’s well known that pudica has a rudimentary nervous system that can even be temporarily inhibited using anesthetics (just like ours can!). she hooked up a ton of these plants in pots to identical rail systems that allowed them to be lightly dropped in an identical way, juuuuust heavy enough to trigger the stimulus so all the leaves drop down when they hit the bottom (a piece of foam so they wouldn’t actually hurt the plants). every time the plants would be dropped, they would close up.
but after the plants were dropped about 60 times each, they stopped responding to the drop.
they remembered that no harm was coming from this action and decided that it was against their best interests to keep expending energy closing their leaves. they 200% learned to stop.
she decided to test it further. she put some of the plants in a shaker and let them receive a more jarring response; the plants closed up as usual. then, she put them back in the droppers and dropped them again. they didn’t close up. they had remembered that response. this dispels the obvious rebuttal to this experiment of the plants just being tired; they still closed up when stimulated differently.
they just chose not to close up when they hit a stimulus they remembered.
it turns out that not only could they remember to keep their leaves open when dropped on the apparatus, but they remembered after 28 days when she kept testing it!! apparently by the end of the experiment, all the plants had decided to keep their leaves open when dropped!!!!
how do they do this?? we literally dont know. they have no central brain, only a basic nervous system. can other plants do this???
well, adding onto that, venus fly traps can count! like. they have three hairs inside their traps, and all three must be touched within 20 seconds for the trap to close. once closed, those three trigger hairs must continue to be stimulated by thrashing prey, or the trap will reopen.
so yeah like. basically ‘are they sentient’: apparently to an extent???? we dont know exactly why or how but they are??? maybe???? sort of????? at least some of them are?? but they dont have a brain so everyones like????????????????????? maybe its through a signaling network????????????????? but like how would that even work?????????
plant consciousness is still new enough to be dismissed as crazy by a lot of biologists but like. the evidence is there. we don’t know a whole lot and its clearly a radically different kind of intelligence than we know in animals, but it’s there and we 200% dont know how it works yet or even the full extent of how plants use this intelligence (for example: does a redwood have the same intelligence as a venus fly trap?? how does it learn things and use that knowledge???)
national geographic wrote an awesome article visualizing the experiment here if you want to read more!
my favorite thing about people who do advance math & science calculations in a professional capacity is they tend to forget really basic formulas that most students would know. there’s just not enough room
As an engineer, I can confirm we use our fingers to add.

“But I only work in retail…” TOP 10 transferrable skills to boost your CV and job applications!
Recently I’ve been talking to friends who are beginning to consider a career in law and they’ve often started a sentence with, “But I only work in retail”. Particularly when you’re aiming for a more corporate career, the fact that you’ve “only” worked in retail can make you feel lesser-than compared to other people who are applying for the same job, internship, or postgraduate study as you. However, there are so many transferrable skills that are gained from working within the retail industry that you shouldn’t overlook. By focusing on these key skills, you will be able to make your application stand out, and show to any recruitment team that you’re the best person for the job! Remember, when you’re writing your CV/job application, use “show don’t tell” - rather than listing your skills, show them through examples of jobs or tasks you’ve done.
Here are the TOP 10 retail skills to boost your CV or application form:
1. Communicating with a range of different people with different needs
This is a great skill to highlight if you’re applying for a job where you are going to be in communication with large businesses or offices in other countries. Being able to change your communication approach to different environments shows that you are aware of the needs of others.
2. Multi-tasking, time management, and prioritising
Working in retail means juggling a constant to-do list. Rarely do you find that you are able to work solely on one task without being stopped by a customer or another staff member to assist them with something? This means that you have become a taskmaster, able to perform a number of tasks at once, prioritise the more urgent jobs, and get everything done within the hours of your shift.
3. Responsibility and leadership
Were you in charge of one section of the store? Have you undertaken any supervisor training? Have you put yourself forward to oversee a stock take? Any time where you have stepped up from your usual sales associate tasks shows that you have the drive to take on greater responsibility and be a leader to others - make that stand out! It shows that you are willing to go above and beyond your job description and that you believe your skills can add to the success of the business.
4. Following set processes but making routine tasks more efficient
Most stores have certain routines that must be followed, but have you found ways to get the job done faster? Were you the one who thought of moving the layout of the store around to make it easier for customers to find the till? Have you re-organised the changing rooms to make it easier for you and your colleagues to re-tag clothes? Not only does this show that you’re capable of following instructions, but also that you’re pro-active and want to see improvements and greater efficiency.
5. Problem-solving and adaptability
Adapting to the needs of others is central to a retail role, but is also a really useful skill for other employers. It shows that you don’t crack under pressure and that you can rationalise a situation and come to a successful outcome. Dealing with a range of customer issues and complaints demonstrates your problem-solving abilities, and that you are willing to go the extra mile to ensure that customers leave the store feeling much happier than when they came in!
6. Commercial awareness
Particularly if you are seeking a career in corporate law, or within a larger business, commercial awareness is one of the main skills that the company is looking for in their employees. Speaking from my experience in law, clients don’t just come to their lawyer for legal advice but they expect them to have an acute knowledge of their industry and to be able to predict and mitigate upcoming challenges. By working in retail, you will have felt the effects of the rise of online shopping and the effect that has had on the number of sales you’ve seen in your store, so talk about it! Talk about the fact that Brexit uncertainty has impacted your business, discuss how immigration issues have meant that you’ve not been able to hire as many new staff - all of this shows that you’re in tune with the wider picture and the economy as a whole.
7. Attention to detail
Attention to detail, especially in stressful environments, is a really important skill to highlight to a future employer. As a lawyer, for example, the smallest of details can make or break a case, so the attention to detail you have developed through maintaining high standards in your store is not something you should overlook!
8. Achieving targets, both personal and financial
Whether that’s the personal targets you set with your store manager at the start of every quarter or the financial targets for the store as a whole, showing that you can reach and surpass your goals will make you stand out from other job applicants. At the end of the day, businesses need to make money! And no matter how much of a good candidate you are, if that company doesn’t think that you are going to be able to help them grow financially, they won’t hire you. Demonstrate evidence of you being able to do this and your application will be so much stronger.
9. Team-work and collaboration
Being able to work well in a team is something that almost every employer looks for in a job candidate. Being a reliable and resourceful team member is hugely important to the success of larger companies, where they often internally refer clients to different departments and share client work among a number of staff members. Give examples of times where you’ve stepped up to help out one of your colleagues, or a time when you’ve created a team to get a task completed in time.
10. Using your initiative
Although at the bottom of this list, being able to demonstrate that you use your initiative relates to all of the above skills. When you give examples of times when you’ve shown attention to detail or managed your time effectively, drop in the fact that you did so without being asked or told to by your manager. Showing that you can work successfully without the need for someone constantly telling you what to do shows your future employer that you are capable of handling more responsibility than other candidates.

Gotta make room for the smart shit
Fun fact as you go through college all the people majoring in any kind of math or engineering gradually forget how to do basic fucking arithmetic because their brain is full of the parts of math that you can’t do on a calculator in less than a second. Eventually if they’re cut off from their tech they pretty much have to ask an art major how long division works.
Woke up at 2am and couldn’t fall back asleep so I made a tutorial on the Photoshop techniques I use most frequently. Starting with the sketch:
adjustment layers: specifically the hue/saturation slider in this case, allows you to color correct quickly
lasso tool: for sharp edges!
alpha lock: useful for painting within a pre-defined area (especially useful when painting characters)
x (hotkey) : toggle between foreground + background colors- let’s you easily blend between 2 colors
ctrl/cmd click : quickly change current active layer. Especially useful if you’re burdened with too many layers (or just very disorganized)
clipping mask: similar to alpha lock, but can add details without changing/ painting directly on the previous layer. I often use them to test out + apply gradients.
layer styles: I didn’t use any in this image, but the possibilities for layer styles endless, from simply adding a quick outline (useful for die cut demarcations when making stickers!) to creating more seemingly complex appearances. Here’s a gif of Nick Carver using layer styles (a combo of drop shadows + inner shadows) to quickly make the illusion of snow but with simple strokes.

How to recover an unsaved draft on Microsoft Word
This literally saved my ass a few minutes ago. Yes, you can recover those files that you accidentally closed and thought you couldnt get back.
Right after that happens, open Microsoft Word again and click File - Info - Manage Versions - Recover Unsaved Documents.
It is literally that simple.

RARE STUDY TIPS
1. write down how much you study over time, then write down how you did on the quiz/test. this will help you see the amount of studying is nessecary for you to get a good grade and fully learn the material!!!
2. make your study space smell fresh, preferably of mint. mint helps you focus and stay sharp. other good smells would be lemon, etc.
3. after studying for a long amount of time, go exercise for ~30 min. shower, get dressed, etc then review the info you had just been studying! you should come back fresher, and your brain is able to remember the info even better!
4. don’t always study in comfy/pj clothes. if you study a lot after school or classes, then it’s ok. but if all you plan on doing is studying for that day, for part of the day get dressed up! put on some business casual wear, that’s cute yet functional and do your hair, etc. this will put you in a “get shit done” mode.
5. after studying a unit/chapter, record yourself explaining it, as if to a person whose never heard of it. this helps SO MUCH. one, explaining/teaching helps you learn so much better, and two, you have a little video to review just before the test!!
6. study on the floor. if you have a carpeted area in your home, spread out all study materials, a white board, etc and study! it helps so much because you are comfertable and everything is within reach. do this if you need a break from desk studying.
It’s almost as if schools push and ideology that benefits schools.
Bruh, trades are in high fucking demand right now too. Between now and 2020 there are suppose to be 300,000 more jobs and that’s just for welder.
Shit, they’ll pay for you to learn how to do it.
I just finished high school and got a untility job in a factory and I have almost no experience. They’re gonna train me for everything plus it has full health benefits.
Trades are fucking great.
My husband is a welder, and is very very good at it. He got hired by a locksmith company pretty much just by walking in and going “Yes I can weld.”
All of the other guys there were great at locksmithing, but none of them were trained welders, and they needed someone who could build custom doors and frames.
They trained him to do lock stuff too, so now he can weld AND pick locks.
The owner of the company, when he handed out Christmas bonuses, looked at him and went “Dude we literally cannot fire you because we’d be screwed so here’s your bonus and also we’re giving you a raise.”
Welders are in desperate demand.
Blows kisses to this post. Anyway, learn a trade, unionize, wear your PPE, memorize OSHA’s phone number.
Curve ball from life! Everything still feels pretty surreal, but I'm getting through it. Queue jokes about shitty brain surgery robots. 👇 places where I post...
I am very saddened to hear today that Simone Giertz, the “queen of shitty robots”, has a brain tumor.
The tumor is benign but it is large and she will be having surgery to have it removed.
I love Simone’s youtube show, I think she is an awesome, creative maker who has a lot of fun and is always entertaining.

How To Get A Job Fast As Hell
@owenabbott
Apply to a job, wait (1) day, then call. Give them your first and last name. Tell them you submitted an application and that you’re very motivated to find [Enter field name] work. Let the conversation lead you wherever it takes. Be very polite. Say” thank you for your time, I’ll be looking forward to hearing back from you.” Rinse, repeat. This is to force them to be looking out for your application.
When you get to the interview, shake their hand firmly, tell them your first and last name.
Describe your experiences as “ two years transcription and data entry” if you have a desk job interview and “ [however many years] costumer service, retail and stock” for your retail jobs.
Don’t use job “ buzz words” I stg they hear them all day. Say things like, “ I’m detail oriented and am very good at taking instruction.” “ I would like to work for a company with integrity and I feel that [ company name] would be a good fit”
When they ask you if you have “reliable transportation” say YES. don’t tell them what kind of transportation, just say yes. (if you don’t do this, you wont get the job , I’m telling you right now).
Research the company. Know what they do, why they do it, how OLD the company is. WHERE it was founded, and what kind of position you’re intending to apply for.
When they ask you “ give us a situation where you had to blah blah blah” Make one the fuck up. Make yourself sound good as hell, and like you put your company’s needs slightly above the customer’s needs, but make the customer happy.
If they ask you about being outgoing, Say you “like to focus on your work so you can concentrate on doing things right” (which buys you out of having to act friendly all the time)
Questions for after the interview:
1. Does this position offer upward mobility?
2. Do you enjoy working for the company? (if you’re not interviewing for a temp agency who will send you anywhere)
Then, shake their hand, Ask them to repeat their name (REMEMBER THIS) say thank you for your time, wish them a nice day and leave. write their name down outside if you have to, just remember the fuck out of it.
AFTER your interview, send a card directed to the name of the person who interviewed you (I’ll give you them) that says “Thank you for the interview, I appreciate the opportunity. have a great day” This shows that you have an understanding of professionalism, and will have them thinking of you kindly (or at least remembering you) when they’re shuffling through the choices.
DO NOT tell them you just moved to the city over the phone. In person, tell them you just moved to the city. Make it sound like the only reason you need a job is because you moved. Not because you’re desperate.
