The Dagenham Breach Housing Co-Operative by Matt Lucraft
Marrying an interpretation of the English vernacular with historical Japanese architecture, the Dagenham Breach Housing Cooperative (DBHC) is a community-driven, future-conscious housing scheme. The project is imagined over many lifetimes, the architecture morphing and adapting to changing social, economic and environmental impacts: a strategic infrastructure occupying residual brownfield sites across the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.
Inspired by the revolutionary Becontree Estate, constructed in the interwar period to house over 100,000 people from East End ‘slums’, the project addresses London’s current housing ‘crisis’, seeking an appropriate and innovative way to provide for the growing population who are rapidly being out-priced and threatening to leave the capital.
