“It was working over the summer hols…” Remus tapped a finger to his jaw, looking over the muggle record player he’d smuggled in at the beginning of the term. He and Peter had been tinkering around with it for the past half hour, sitting on the Common Room floor with the case between them and unsuccessfully attempting to fix it. Remus stuck out his tongue to the side as he fiddled with a few of the knobs, a concentrated frown creasing his brow. Perhaps there was something wrong with the needle? He carefully pushed it to the side as he removed a glossy vinyl labelled THE ALOHAMONICS – PRETTY LITTLE WITCH from the turntable.
No Thin Lizzy today. With the recent attacks, Remus felt much more self-conscious about broadcasting his muggle ties, but trying out the record player was just too good to pass up. After all, he’d been dying to get it to work ever since the term had begun and really, they could all use some cheering up. Peter was equally interested, and since Sirius had exiled them from their dorm to take a nap, the two of them had taken up camp behind one of the sofas.
“Of course it’s not working now,” Remus muttered, but his eyes were bright as he continued to troubleshoot. “I mean, maybe it’s just worn out? I did get it in a secondhand shop and it’s nearly a decade old.”
Peter pulled up the sleeves of his jumper as he watched Remus pulled the record off the turntable. He took the vinyl and placed it gingerly onto the carpet beside them as Remus continued to fiddle with the broken machine. “Can you pull out the needle? Is it some kind’a special one? Maybe we could get like’a sewing needle?”
To Peter it just looked like a clunky box that somehow spit out sounds. It reminded him of a radio actually, little box with a voice trapped inside. It took quite a bit of convincing that it wasn’t just enchanted. Radio signals? Muggles were wild. “Or maybe just...A good Reparo? Try that yet?” The boy looked about the floor to find where he’d left his wand, leaning over to snatch it up before sitting up again.
“Or-Oh! Does it have those uh-uh. What do you...Batteries? Those in it? They die don’t they? Maybe some kinda like. Mini lightnin’ spell to keep the power going in it? Just like’a....” He waved his wand about idly as he tried to think of a spell, pointing it at the turntable eventually. Nothing happened for a moment, before it began to float just a bit off the ground, “Oh, wrong one-wrong one.” Peter picked up the turntable from the air to set it down again in his lap.

“James, are you still looking at those trick potions?”
Remus peeked around the corner of another brightly colored aisle, hoping to catch the sight of messy black hair. He was met with a group of third-year Ravenclaws, but there was no sight of James Potter whatsoever. Damn. Where on earth did he go? At any rate, he was probably still in the shop, so there was no need to go tearing up the place looking for him. After checking around a corner one last time, he returned to where his other two friends were by the window, picking up a package of bewitched fireworks and turning it over in his hands.
It was a wonder that the administration expected Hogwarts to stay free of pranks when they allowed their students to shop at one of Britain’s finest magical joke shops. At the moment, Zonko’s was bursting at the seams with students, including a rather suspicious Gryffindor duo. “Marlene and Lily are a few aisles over. Reckon they’re trying to pull one on James?”
Bumping Peter’s shoulder Sirius gave him a cheeky grin before biting messily into a candied orange that fizzled pink on his tongue, “I got no idea what this is but it’s the best thing I’ve had in my mouth and I’ve had some pretty sweet stuff.” Sirius wiggled his brows before wrapping the rest of his treat up the brightly decorated walls of Zonkos beckoned him forth and demanded all of his attention. “I feel like this stuff is dated- I mean…” Sirius tapped the bewitched fireworks Remus had a hold on, “actually…we should get those mate.” Sirius eyed the wall, his hands on his hips, “All of em in fact.”
Attempting to look over the aisles to spot Marlene and Lily he shrugged, “They can try, but we’ll always be one step ahead…or at the very least much louder.” Filling a basket with fireworks, and gum that made everything you say come out as animal sounds Sirius took a silent count of his mates, “Three…Where is James?”
Peter’s attention was pulled from the shelf he’d been staring at when he was knocked into, glancing over Sirius as the other continued on his way, mouth full of candy. He wandered the few steps after him to end up next to Remus, looking over the fireworks he’d picked up. He picked up a similar one, glancing over the label himself, “Outdated doesn’t really mean bad, does it? These are still the kind you can bewitch to spell things, ain’t they?”
Glancing over the display, Peter picked up a couple more fireworks of different kinds, “How many you reckon it’ll take to spell out ‘I’’ve finally decided to confess my undying love to you Snivellus, please marry me, Sirius Black’? At least three. More, if you throw in a nice couplet about how his greasy hair’s just got you head over heels. Right, Padfoot?” Peter’s monotonous tone made his meaning indistinguishable. Whether he was poking fun at Sirius or just plain being an ass was truly a mystery.
A look behind himself confirmed James was no where in sight, “I thought James said he was looking for more prank quills, you know the ones that insult your mum instead’a writing your work?” He unceremoniously dumped the fireworks he was holding into the basket Sirius had picked up.

After carefully breaking off a small corner of the brightly wrapped fudge bar, Remus folded his legs neatly in front of him and set his attention on Peter. The piece went uneaten, set off to the side for the time being, because while chocolate was all fine and good Remus could sense a certain hesitance in Peter’s stance. It immediately set off a slight tingle of concern. Reading others’ emotions was a specialty of his, one that he always used but seldom acted upon unless he was dealing with a friend ( a title which Peter undoubtedly surpassed ).
“If you don’t enjoy Quidditch anymore, then there’s no shame in giving up your spot,” he answered, frowning slightly as a scowl twisted Peter’s features. He doubted that the sport was distasteful enough to warrant such a reaction; perhaps there was another reason for him wanting to drop Quidditch. Personally, Remus would miss Peter being on the team, but it wasn’t as if he’d be spending less time with him if Peter decided to quit. ( As it was, Remus spent the good majority of every waking second with the rest of the Marauders, so it wasn’t really a loss in that sense. )
“At any rate, it’s only the second week of school and our first match isn’t for a month or so, so if you tell James now he’ll have plenty of time to find a substitute and can’t have an excuse to be cross about it.” Remus offered a half-smile, shrugging. “We’d miss you, though. Those younger kids are alright, and I suppose it’s good to build up the team for next year, but we’re going to be stuck with me as the only returning alternate, and we both know I’m rubbish in comparison to you.” He paused, chewing on his lip as he considered it. “But if you really don’t like it…then, well, don’t give yourself grief about it – you’re not obliged to play, whatever Padfoot and Prongs might insinuate.”
Peter sighed softly as his cat tried to wiggle it’s way into laying on it’s back in the crook of his arm, petting the needy animal’s stomach. Staring down at the animal he thought it over, “I. Dunno. It’s just. It doesn’t feel as much fun as it used to. And I gotta start studying more, as much as I don’t want to. I gotta get good enough grades to get enough NEWT classes.”
Then apply to the Auror’s program, get in and shove it in his father’s face. That was the goal at least, thought it felt terribly unreachable. Peter scooted back in his bed and laid back with his head resting against the headboard, letting his cat stretch out over his stomach. For a brief moment he closed his eyes and let out an exaggerated sigh, staring at the wall in front of himself as he opened them again.
“I guess I just gotta find a way to break the news to James, without him takin’ it like I just told him I died instead of dropped the team. Maybe when he’s drunk-Ah, but he doesn’t remember shite.” Peter frowned at Remus with such a hurt expression, “Why does James have to have so many feelings to hurt?”
lycanthroptea :
“If Sirius can summon me down a corridor by Accio’ing my clothes, I reckon you can Accio anything,” he remarked, idly picking up the stack of diamonds to order them from two to ace. In hindsight, it was a rather reckless prank that had the capability of being either extremely dangerous ( he could have collided with someone if the hallway hadn’t been empty ) or extremely embarrassing ( apparently, Padfoot hadn’t known whether the clothes would take Remus with them or not ). Still, it made for a rather memorable moment, especially since neither of the aforementioned situations occurred.
His ears perked up at the mention of chocolate, fingers stilling after he neatly tucked the jack of diamonds behind the ten. “Really?” he asked, voice brightened with pleasant surprise. As delightful as the prospect of chocolate was, it was the fact that Wormtail had actually thought of him that really lightened his day. After five years of friendship, Remus Lupin still hadn’t gotten used to the fact that people liked him. It was strange, a warm feeling pressing his chest that curled the corners of his lips.
Leaving the stack of cards neatly next to the other suits, Remus hopped off the bed and padded over to his own, slipping a hand underneath his pillow to feel the smooth texture of paper wrapping. “You really didn’t have to – Merlin, this looks amazing. Thanks, Pete!” he said cheerily, carefully tearing the edge of the packaging off. “Sorry about your aunt, though. Is she alright now?”
Peter chuckled at the thought of Remus flying down a hallway. As much as it probably wasn’t fun to Remus, he was sure it was quite the sight. He grabbed his wand from his pillow to mumble out an Accio, the card sliding out from under the bedside table and onto the bed. He hummed in contentment and went back to sorting the stacks of cards.
“No problem. Oh yeah, I mean, I think she’s fine. She caught pneumonia, and her husband’s out workin’, kids like, five. So we just went to visit, help out a couple days til she wasn’t stuck in bed.” The teen shrugged. She’d been better off when they’d left than when they’d arrived, so he was sure by now she was just fine, maybe a cold lingering.
Fixing all the cards together, Peter put them back into the box they belonged to before returning it to his bedside table. He looked down at the cat still held in his arm, scratching lightly at it’s chest. It purred happily as it was given attention. “Right, I been meanin’ to ask-And don’t go blabbing to James or Sirius, they’ll blow a gasket.”
“You think I should stay on as a quidditch alternate? I’m jus’ like. I dunno I’m not really interested in it anymore.” There was a nagging voice in the back of his head, one that sounded too much like his father, that belittled him for being an alternate; if he couldn’t make the team, what was the point. Peter scowled down at cat, petting it more, “I’m not as, into it you know. And I’m sure there’s some kid dyin’ to get the spot, so why should I take it up and half-ass it, ya know?”

lycanthroptea :
“Good for you. See, that’s the reason I avoided our cabin on the Hogwarts Express this year – Crouch and I had patrol duty, and I wasn’t too keen on having to write up anyone for something before the year even began. Lily would’ve lambasted you lot, and I don’t think that’s quite conducive for Prongs’s plans for wooing her.” His voice was light, amused, lips pulling into a smile that spoke volumes of comfortable easiness, a quality only revealed to those Remus truly trusted.
Peter was one of three people who fit into that category, his fellow semi-sane companion in their quartet of brothers. It was with him that Remus felt most comfortable catching his breath, perhaps because Peter had a lingering quality about him that was much more anchoring and down-to-earth than the wild energy of James and Sirius.
A creak of bedsprings and Remus had slipped off his bed and climbed onto Peter’s, flicking an ace of diamonds into the correct pile. He absentmindedly began helping Peter sort through the haphazard pile of cards. “Needy little bugger. He’s a bit like Padfoot in that respect.” Remus laughed, reaching over to scratch the cat behind its ears. “He’s literally draped himself over me when I won’t pay attention to him because I’m working on homework.”
“I probably need to do that as well,” he admitted, grimacing slightly. “I did clean out my trunk over the summer hols, since Mum saw the inside of it and nearly had a heart attack over all the stuff at the bottom. Forced me to learn a bunch of cleaning spells, too.”
Seeing a leg appear in his vision Peter glanced up to watch Remus sit on his bed and help him sort the cards out. He idly rubbed his thumb over his cat’s shoulder as it meowed again, tail swishing with contentment. The animal purred more as Remus reached out to pet it, closing it’s eyes. Spoiled rotten. “Oh yeah. You hear that? You’re just as bad as Black is. Least you don’t steal everyone’s jumpers instead of doing laundry.” Peter looked down at the cat, who stared back at him with it’s big eyes.
With a dull chuckle he kissed the top of the cat’s head and went back to sorting the cards. Hmm. He was still missing one. “Ah, there’s always one, innit? Ten of clubs.” Peter scooted back towards the head of his bed to rummage through his bedside table again to look for it. “Think an Accio might work?” He asked off-handedly as he looked through the drawer.
“Ah-Yeah mate, under your pillow. I got you that chocolate from Germany, that fudge-whatever one? I was visiting my aunt with my mum, she’s all sick, my aunt, and went to the grocer for her once. I had to hide it though--You know if it were on your desk it would’a been down Sirius’s gullet three hours ago.”
Character aesthetic ♡ Peter Pettigrew
“If you made a better rat than a human, it’s not much to boast about, Peter.”
Peter hunched over his book at the table, propping his chin on his hand and his elbow on to the table. He was half reading the assigned work, half pulling apart an orange. At this point, the orange was more interesting that the Divinations reading. He sighed and turned the page, grumbling to himself over the book. Maybe he should just skim it-that’s what skimming was for, wasn’t it? a General knowledge? That’d be good enough.
He looked up ass some more kids wandered into the Great Hall for lunch. It was relatively well populated, but a bit late for the majority of people to be eating. The boy perked up a bit when he though he recognized a face, grinning brightly and getting up on his knees on the bench, “Hey, Marls! Over here!” He waved an arm to catch his cousin’s attention as well.
Sitting back down on his knees he waited for Marlene to get closer to actually climb off the bench, giving her a quick squeezing hug. “Hey-How are you? Sorry I couldn’t come with you guys at the end of August.” He sat back down as he spoke, setting his bag on the ground to make room for Marlene, “One of my dad’s sister got all sick, so I visited with mum. Right--You know a spell that can take all the stupid shit out of a book, toss it into my head? I think paint drying is more fun than this shite,” Peter closed the textbook and shoved it across the table, no longer interested in reading it.
lycanthroptea :
His homework thankfully finished for the day, Remus jogged up the steps to the boy’s dormitories with relatively light spirits. Fabian hadn’t been joking about the difficulty of NEWT-level courses, so freedom from worrying about them – even for a day – was enough to put a jaunty spring in his step. Perhaps he could read through a few more chapters of that book his mum had given him; the feeling of its neatly bound cover sent a prickle of delight through his fingertips.
Les Misérables, while admittedly a quality piece of literature, was taking an absolute lifetime to get through. Remus flipped the heavy tome over in his hands, thumb brushing against fifteen hundred pages of political commentary, religious themes, and what his mother called “a heart-wrenching glimpse into the human soul.” He’d started on the book in early August and still had yet to finish it, and, being only halfway through the novel at the moment, probably had a good amount of time before he’d reach the final chapter. Reaching the top step, Remus pushed open the door to their room.
“There you are, Pete. Nice shirt.” Remus glanced over the band design, nodding appreciatively. The name seemed vaguely familiar, although he couldn’t tell whether or not they were a muggle or wizarding band. ( Then again, Thin Lizzy would always be the best band, and really the only one worth knowing about. )
He deposited his rucksack on the ground before flopping backwards onto his bed, tucking his hands behind the back of his head. “Pretty well. I was looking for you earlier, actually, after James and Sirius landed themselves in detention again, but I got distracted by Fabian Prewett in the library. What’ve you been up to?”
Peter returned to rummaging through his bedside table as Remus moved about the room, glancing up at his cat as it hopped on top of the table and stared at him. The cat meowed again before laying down and sprawling out it’s legs. Needy monster. Peter gave it a quick pet before going back to searching for the rest of the playing cards.
“Detention? Already? That’s a record right there. What, not even two weeks into school? No-I left them before the nuts could get into trouble.” He tossed another couple cards onto the bed, then turned to the card scattered across his sheets to organize them. Did he have them all?
He began sorting them into the suits and scooped up his cat in one arm as it attempted to seat itself in the middle of this, “You see this little bastard? Always wanting attention when I’m busy, then I get a moment, and I might as well not exist.” Peter cradled the cat in one arm and it purred at the attention, now content with being held.
“I’ve been uh-Well kinda cleaning. Jus’ putting everything away really. A contained mess, if you will. At least know where things are, even if it ain’t kept neat and pretty., you know?”
⭐️
ONE;; Peter thinks Micah’s quite smart, of what little he knows about the other. A bit arrogant, but he’s used to people like that, isn’t he? He could see where Micah is coming from, the youngest sibling. Being an only sibling, it was hard enough for him to be the best in his parents eyes. Two older siblings, both with good reputations in academics? It made sense Micah was the way he was. He’s a good kid, in Peter’s eyes.
⭐️
ONE;; Peter’s put off by Antonin. There’s something strange about him he doesn’t like. Really, he categorizes him with the rest of the pureblood kids who are supremacist asses to the lesser-blooded student body. And while he’s personally confident in his dueling skills, he really never wants to be put in a match against Dolohov. He doesn’t discount the guy would probably pull something sketchy.
