Have I ever talked about musicals on this blog before? no, but I’m going to now because of the Dear Evan Hansen movie trailer.

I stand by the fact the DEH is SO MUCH BETTER if you think of Evan as the villain. Just because he’s the protagonist doesn’t mean he should be rooted for, and ZOE MURPHY is the one who goes through a traditional “hero’s journey” arc.

Zoe suffers the loss of her brother, has the internal conflict of not knowing how to grieve for him, has the external conflict of being lied to by the villain (Evan), Words Fail is still the climax of the show only in this case it’s because Zoe learns the truth, and finally the resolution is Zoe learning how to grieve and forgiving Evan so she can move on. She’s the hero, she’s just not the protagonist.
