“I’ve got your back man,” Steve steps off with Dustin.

He steals one last glance, over his shoulder, back Nancy’s way. “Don’t miss me too much Wheeler.”

His wink is the last thing anyone on the elevator sees before the grey doors shut again. Nancy’s mouth opens slightly in shock at his audacity… his charm. His promise to flirt with her at the end of the world flashes through her mind and her lips tug up into a smile. “Idiot.” She breathes out fondly, so low it’s really only mouthed to herself.

In the Jancy/Stancy debate, I implore everyone to remember that the foundation of this ‘love triangle’ is some truly piss-poor writing

I feel like, objectively, it’s the weakest part of season 1.

And half the issue here is that they complicated everything by choosing to redeem Steve. But, while that’s part of what makes the love triangle confusing, I don’t think it contributes to the bad writing.

Most of that, to me, stems from Jonathan.

Because, if we get Doylist about it, we know the writers don’t want us to think Jonathan is a bad person. We know they want us to sympathize with him and not find his pictures of Nancy undressing creepy. The pictures exist simply as a plot device to make Steve mad and give him a chance to act like an asshole in front of Nancy.

Except, it is creepy. I’m not saying we’ve gotta lock him up but it certainly doesn’t make me like Jonathan.

And what’s worse, he isn’t apologetic at all. In fact, he doubles down (“I just thought it was a good picture”). And this, of course, is a writing problem. Because Jonathan could’ve felt bad about the pictures, but then I guess they would’ve had to acknowledge that it was genuinely bad in the first place lol.

And then this sort of problem comes up again with the conversation Nancy and Jonathan have in the woods. We know the writers want us to agree with Jonathan to some extent, but it all just sounds like misogynistic bullshit. His speech here really bothers me, and I can’t fully pin down what it is. It definitely has something to do with the fact that it comes off as Jonathan viewing women he thinks are ‘less liberated’ as less deserving of respect. Dunno, this speech doesn’t feel like the win for feminism that some people act like it is.

We’re supposed to believe Jonathan and Barb when they say that Nancy is trying to be someone else, but is that ever proven to be true? She’s trying to be someone else because she bought a new bra to impress her boyfriend (cough cough sexual repression of teenage girls)? She’s trying to be someone else because she (shock horror) drank at a high school party? It’s all too tame to carry much weight- which is a writing problem. If they wanted us to side with this perspective, they should have established who Nancy was, then showed her changing those facets of herself to be with Steve.

The way the show presents it to us, Steve likes who Nancy is.

But this all gets even more convoluted by one particular bit of baffling writing. Jonathan, when speaking about the picture he took (and developed) of Nancy undressing, says “for that moment, you were alone, or you thought you were. And you could just be yourself.”

Which is confusing because… she wasn’t alone? She was with Steve, she was staring right at him. She was about to sleep with Steve- about as not alone as it gets. So what the hell is Jonathan talking about?

And again, Doylistically, we know that the writers want us to feel like Jonathan sees the real Nancy and understands her. But the writing is bad, so what comes across is that Nancy seems most herself when she’s… alone with Steve? Am I reading that right?

So, here I am acknowledging that I understand the writers’ intentions in season 1 when it comes to this love triangle. But the execution is flawed, has continued to be flawed, and will probably have a similarly convoluted conclusion.

Steve Harrington would totally stay up all night on a school night having round after round of sex because he's totally obsessed with his partner and has no impulse control and then show up to work the next day chugging insane coffee all day and being overly friendly to all his coworkers. Like he is waving and smiling and asking everyone about their families and weekend plans in the hallway like he’s the mayor and their response will be the most interesting thing he has ever heard!
